Westfalia RETRACTABLE towbar

I have the above on my BMW X5 E70 which has stopped working. So have many others if you read BMW owners websites such as BMWlander, 5series and Bimmerfest etc. The retractable towbar would appear to have a common manufacturing fault in that the motor/gear mechanism uses plastic gear wheels and one or more of these break for no obvious reason. Westfalia will not sell spares to the public and BMW will only replace the whole thing at a cost of circa £1500! Thankfully an enterprising guy in Estonia has manufactured some replacement gear wheels in stainless steel but only on a very small on demand basis. Bravo to him but Westfalia should face up to this design flaw and offer a repair kit. Shame on you Westfalia and BMW for not pressurising them to do so.

Westfalia detachable towbar fault which is very dangerous.

I purchased a BMW X5 which is 4 years old. It comes fitted with a detachable tow-bar which is manufactured by Westfalia. I have towed with this tow-bar about 12 times and on the detachable part of the tow-bar is showing excessive signs of wear and is moving about inside the cone shaped sleeve, which then makes a very annoying banging sound whilst towing my caravan. I would certainly consider these facts when choosing a tow-bar and choose a different make. I have contacted Westfalia uk limited who have sent photos to westfalia in Germany but because the tow-bar is over two years old they are not interested in replacing the tow-bar FOC. I have since ordered a new tow-bar from PF Jones in Manchester whos service and price was excellent, I would defiantly recommend them.

If you have only towed for 12 miles, was the fitting heavily worn when you bought the car?
