If you hire Walker Custom Exteriors good luck. This started August 29, 2023.

I needed a short retaining wall for my back yard near a creek. Kevin showed up for estimate on time(unlike some other companies). Kevin wrote me up an estimate for a concrete retaining wall now and another estimate for a deck maybe next year overhanging the wall. Since I liked the detail in Kevin's estimate and being the second lowest quote I received, I asked him to proceed with wall for now, and we'll do the deck maybe next year.

During construction, I asked a few questions because this was the first retaining wall I've had done. Past history with construction companies have given me bad experiences so I wanted to be well informed. Before, during construction and after construction I was concerned about the concrete retaining wall being too tall- about 6-7" because I wanted the future deck to be even with the ground/turf. Kevin re-assured me each time I asked that it would be level with the ground-"we are professionals and know what we are doing".

My final wall is 6-7 inches too tall and Kevin suggested putting a step up to the deck and this is not what I wanted. The retaining wall is made out of concrete and has rebar in it so it will not be easy for me to cut down about 6-7 inches to be level with the ground. After it was done, the next day Kevin emailed me and acknowledged the concrete wall was too tall and again suggested a step up to the future deck. I'm getting up in age, and some of my friends are getting up in age- Walking could be a problem in the near future and I would not be able to enjoy the deck if I had to use a walker or a wheelchair.

Even the step itself could be a trip hazard. I have emailed Kevin Walker 3 times in the past week and I am getting no response, so I thought this would assist me in getting the wall cut down shorter to where I wanted it to be. UPDATE---- It's been about 30 days since the start of this project, took 3 days to build it up, but it's too tall and still not finished. I did see they had enough time to build a fence 2 weeks ago and got a good review.

Personally, I think I would finish one project before I started a new one, especially if I had 30 days now to finish it. Since the project was not completed as expected, I put a freeze on my credit card payment- of course, Kevin got upset, threatened to tear it back down and I could have someone else build it. Honestly, the easiest solution would be to complete the project by cutting the wall down by about 7 inches to get it level with the ground, I will unfreeze the card payment and this whole nightmare will be done, completed. 9-26- Sent me an email today stating he or his crew are unable to come fix wall- 2 trucks are broke down and need my money to fix the trucks so he can work.

Still wants me to pay before the job is done..Update- 10/13/2023, In the past couple weeks Kevin has been telling me to drop the credit card dispute and he will get his guys over to finish the job/lower the wall. Okay, the credit card dispute was resolved 10/6/2023, I have emailed Kevin 3 times in the past week to let him know when I am available and have gotten no response.

Loss:
$3000
Cons:
  • Takes money b4 job finished
  • Does not listen to customer requests

Preferred solution: Finish the project by cutting the concrete wall about 7 inches lower- As I mentioned before and during construction. Will lose money if I have to hire another company to cut wall down.

User's recommendation: Should not start a new project if he can't finish this project.
