New packaging again, less product higher cost

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Saddens me as this company is our go to to add more protein and fat to our dogs current raw diets. It is a supplement we add in. No way could anyone afford to use this product only to feed a 60 plus pound canine times two and times three coming soon. No way! Its already costly beyond what you get in these small bags. Now its worse. New packaging gives them an excuse to decrease ounces. And increase cost. Terrible. Now I need to investigate alternative companies once again as the cost to feed three large dogs will put me out of house and home.

VITAL ESSENTIALS RAW - BAD QUALITY

Vital Essentials Raw is usually offers a great product. Today I opened my Tripe and found large chunks of cow belly. I wrote and called but no one ever called or wrote back. These large pieces are ugly scary looking. No customer service. Hey VE invest in some service!!! You would think that a company which sell to the PUBLIC wold be able to answer phone calls or their facebook page or website. Have you seen their website. Looks like my ten year old daughter wrote the pages. For a CPG company they have along way to go to please customers. PISSED!

good grief.....as somebody else said here tripe is cow stomach.....give me a break. If the cow stomach scares you, don't buy it!

I sympathize with the yuckiness factor...I have never eaten menudo in my life.

BUT, I do know that tripe is loaded with beneficial enzymes and dogs thrive on it.

By far the best raw dogfood product ive found is Instinct raw. Give it a try.

And no i dont work for them and am not getting anything in return for saying this. Its an all around fine product.

Oh I love the irony of a screen name fckbigbusiness and you are touting the virtues of Natures Variety. They only happen to be the largest commercial raw and one of the largest kibble company's .

And no I don't work for Vital.

I'm currently feeding Vital Essentials and very happy with it. Just curious, is this what you feed?

Guest

I've been feeding Vital Essentials niblets to my pup. He used to love it. Now he's vomited it up a few times, won't go near it AND the last 2 bags have had an awful, chemical smell.

Guest

Tripe is cow belly. Just break it into pieces. :roll

An issue with these mom & pop dog food companies is they have no infrastructure. A couple major quality issues and the phones go unanswered....

Vital Essentials-Dangerously Advising Pet Owners

This company had been instructing pet owners to do harmful and dangerous things to their pets for probably years. Up until recently this company had this health advice that they are not even qualified to be giving, on their website! After an uproar of me and other have finally spoken out to them, suddenly it disappeared and they have different information on that page. They tell people to transition their pets to raw food, that they should starve them if they wont eat it until they have no choice but to eat the raw. One lady that works there named Leslie told her story of how she let her cat starve for almost 3 weeks until it finally started eating raw. For those of you that are not aware, cats that don't eat can get Fatty Liver Disease which can kill them. This can take as little as two days to set in. I am FURIOUS about this!!! Leslie had the nerve to try and make a public apology and suddenly changed her story about what happened, not buying it, especially since this "advice" WAS on their webpage until enough people complained about it. DO NOT listen to the *** these people try to tell you to do to your pets just to get them to eat THEIR food. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!!!!! Several people including myself have been trying to get in contact with the CEO of the company but so far have been unsuccessful as we are sure he/she is avoiding this issue at all cost.

This story is such *** There is no way a cat would wait three weeks to eat. I've had cats all my life, And they do train there owners the owners don't train them.

He was hungry enough to go out and catch a bird.

The food is five star food, That's all that matters. What a *** comment.

"terrible"? really?

This company makes raw food and has a passion for making dogs and cats healthier. Climb down off the ledge here. Everyone knows cats are finicky. If I owned a raw food company, I'd be tempted to just ignore cats because they are so easily addicted to carb based diets.

Ironic since they are carnivores - go figure. But giving advice to try to get a cat to switch to a healthier diet does not make Vital Essentials terrible in my book.......vote with your dollars and don't buy their food - but good grief take it easy with the slander.

Vital Essentials (Harmful Advice for Pets)

I recently switched to raw diet for my cat (Vital Essentials). He (my cat) wouldn't touch the stuff so I called for some advice on how to get him to eat it. The lady I spoke to told me to not "give in" to my cat and that cats have a way of "training" their humans to give them what they want. She told me that if he wont eat it within 15 minutes, take it away and try again at the next feeding time and that if he won't eat just keep doing this until he does. She said it's normal for the cat to stop eating and lose weight. She told me that from her own personal experience, her cat stopped eating for about 3 weeks and finally started eating the raw. She told me to not let my cat not eating force me to give in and feed my regular food again. Well this seemed rather off and not healthy. So I researched it and found that this was highly dangerous advice. I asked experienced raw feeders on Catster about this and seeked out advice from my vet afterwards. Cats can get seriously ill with fatty liver disease that can set in as early as two days without eating and this can kill them. I was shocked after finding this out that Vital Essentials would give me this advice. My fellow cat owner friends did more research and found that this company has this TERRIBLE advice right on their website!!! They suggest pretty much the same thing right on there on how to transition a pet to raw food. The lady from Vital Essentials that gave me this advice is named Leslie. She finally replied to my complaint by posting on the public forum herself and basically admitted that she said this all but that she wasn't "suggesting" I starve my cat. She then gave even worse advice by telling everyone they should mix dry kibble with the raw food which I found out is also dangerous to do as kibble slowly digests and can cause the raw to back up in the cats system. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!! I am reporting them to the Regulation Board of Wisconsin, the BBB, PETA, and anyone else that can help bring justice.

The woman no longer works for the company. For a company promoting a natural carnivore diet, I think they are doing a *** good job.

Read the back of a commercial kibble bag and complain to them about killing your pets. They are the ones with the lawsuit right now.

This was years ago. Get over it and learn your facts, mixing kibble will not back up a cats digestive system lol.

Guest

To the initial comment...sorry but the ignorance you display is sad and quite shocking. Not trying to disrespect you..ignorance is not a bad thing...you just need to do some research and be a little more knowledgeable before make statements to the public.

Cats will not starve themselves...and...if you think mixing raw and kibble is going to "back up"the raw food in their system...i have to laugh at you... yes kibble and raw will digest at different rates...but feeding a quality meat based kibble and feeding biologically appropriate raw meat to a carnivore...you will not harm. If you eat some oatmeal for breakfast and then some eggs...does the oatmeal hold up the digestion of the eggs, back up your system, and cause serious bodily harm? Come on man...understand your topic before threatening one of the few.companies out there that are doing the right thing for our pet companions.

I commend you for switching to a rae diet. Best thing you could ever do for your animals. Don't get caught up in all of the BS and let it harm your pet...by boycotting a great company and the proper nutrition for your animal...by resorting back to an inappropriate dry grain based kibble for your animals.

Good luck. One love.

Guest

She (VE) shouldn't be offering advice to consumers if she knows nothing about transitioning or animals at all. As a pet owner, -unfortunately- some don't always knows what to do..

Trusting people that work in the pet industry -like VE- (assuming they would know their field) Pet owners would naturally ask them for instruction and inquiry on feeding their pets VE's product.

In no way was LisaJ wrong... This company VE should be educated and informative when selling a product and to the animals the are making food for. You are only making your company look bad..

With such terrible advice. :sigh

KNOW YOUR ***

Guest

From my experience, it is hard for me to believe that a pet won't eat the raw diet. Actually, I haven't tried to feed it to a cat, but I have a small dog who is very finicky about what she eats.

I have been trying for years to find a commercial dog food she would eat consistently. She will eat some brands for a few days and then she just stops eating them. I don't like to think how much money I have spent on things she wouldn't eat. I tried the strategy of giving her the same food each day until she decided to eat.

Sometimes she would not eat her food for as many as four days.

I was always afraid to feed her a raw diet, but I decided to try it. Since that time (four months now) she has devoured every bit of her food and then she licks the bowl until it is clean.

Guest

First of all, LisaJ, why are you asking someone other than your vet about such matters. The blame should be on you for seeking advise from someone who works for a distribution company.

Your own irresponsibility and laziness is to blame, not the person you are projecting all this anger off. I'd recommend any rational person stay clear from YOU, not any company. Justice....oh please. What a drama queen!

Good luck not embarrassing yourself further. Some people shouldn't own and be responsible for pets, you may be one of those people.

Guest

Always do your own research, consult with a Holistic Vet educated in raw diets. If you have questions on advice given, seek a second opinion. If the advice does not sit well with you, don't do it!!!!

Guest

While I do think that is advice that may work for dogs (coming from someone who has a very finicky eater) I do recall from previous research on fasting that you are NOT supposed to fast a cat the way you can a dog for reasons mentioned above.

I have transitioned my dog to a raw diet but saw immediately that she cannot tolerate a raw fresh diet, so we feed freeze dried like vital Essentials and air dried like ZiwiPeak.

Although I still VE as I do believe in their product, I have had a tremendous amount of success feeding ZiwiPeak. Also, unlike what I have found on VE ZiwiPeak does make formulations specifically for cats. It is the same as the dog formula with added taurine and cat-specific nutrients that they cannot product like canines can.

That may be one indicator for those researching which brands to feed their cats.

Just an FYI from another canine VE consumer. :)

Although I am an advocate for Raw food (my guy eats Primal Raw), I don't think that starving an animal is the right way to do it. When I tried to transition my guy to raw he pushed the transition and stopped eating his kibble all together.

So I think there are humane ways to get our pets to eat without hurning their health. (Yes, cats are WAY finicky, so sometimes that tranition just takes longer but in the end it's all worth it to have them on a healthier food)

Guest

wtf is wrong with some people. i feed my dogs and cats raw and I will be sure to advise my friends to stay far away from this company. thanks

Terrible, Awful, Disgusting of this person to starve their pet!
