Original review Dec 13, 2023
Recently moved to Lynchburg and selected VEC for my yearly diabetic eye exam. On their website and on the phone they clearly stated they took Humana.

My Humana medicare advantage plans pays 100% for yearly eye exam. After my exam I had to pay $199.50 of $424.50 bill for exam!!! When I explained that I have NEVER paid 1 penny for a yearly exam before I was told that Humana prices have gone up. I called Humana later and was told patients should never pay a provider anything except a copay fee if there is one and provider bill Humana directly and Humana notify me if I owe anything.
I was given thorough exam mostly by assistants and then grand entrance of doctor to give his sales pitch.

He announced that i had macular degeneration and multiple cataracts and even eyelash loss!!! (but wouldnt show me the eye photos) I needed to use his pills and his eye wash and exams twice a year instead of once. When i told him my previous eye doctor prescribed Preservision eye vitamin and mineral supplement he told me his pills were safer because it did not contain Zinc.
The bill which i was given at checkout listed "Comprehensive Examination NP" plus 4 additional procedures for a total of $424.50 minus $199.50 which I was charged to pay immediately with no explanation how it was arrived at.

2 small bottles which I assumed were samples BUT on the long list of charges turned out to be $93.50: 1.7 oz spray Tea Tree (eyelid and facial cleanser) and 90 softgels MacuHealth (dietary supplement) which I did NOT request or agree to purchase.
Googled MACUHEALTH dietary supplement and could not find a single non-sponsored article, just disguised ads claiming "unique blend of vitamins and minerals, including lutein and zeaxanthin." But the truth is they are NOT vitamins or minerals but carotenoid pigments produced by plants that give fruits their color. Nowhere on the bottle does it mention FDA approval.
One ad/article claimed that a major study had been conducted at a major university by a Doctor Jane Doe !
I found the advertising agency which VEC uses and their website promises to dramatically increase customers and profits.

UPDATES: 1. i have filed a grievence thru Humana 2.

Humana has contacted VEC and tried to tell them that Humana patients ARE NOT to be billed directly instead billing is to go thru Humana. 3. Humana told me that VEC used incorrect medical codes that bypassed Humana payment so patient is responsible. 4.

VEC called me and tried to convince me they did no wrong and the proof was that "the doctor is a good Christian man"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5. I requested copies of the eye exam photos which they should have given me BUT i received blurry black and white printouts by insured mail and a new bill for $29 additional.
