Original review Sep 09, 2019

Besides charging a lot more than they had said for his care, their visiting hours are terrible. They promised to call us if he got worse, but didn't. We were waiting to see him during their very short visiting hours when they called and told us he died.

Cons:
  • Visiting hours and not enough information on care
Reason of review:
better visiting hours and more information on status

Preferred solution: better visiting hours and more information on status. we thought he was doing better.

AI Highlights
  • - Charged $340 for 45 antibiotic pills; billed twice.
  • - Great in emergencies and surgeries, but overcharges and recommends unnecessary tests.

Ourdog had pneumonia. They cgmharged us 340.00 for 45 antibiotic pills. Our local was able to find a human antibioric...same thing...for 100 bucks. We ran out this weekend and could not purchase tge human equivalent. Had to go back to VSH Cary. Not until did they charge me 340.00 but tmthey doubl billed me!i

The other issue other than price gouging on oharma products is their schtick to recommend unnecessary tests to pad tgeir bill. Our dog had a relapse of pneumonia. His prior antibiotic had oprked very well. But thry wnted to put him under at 11 years 5 months age..he is a larg ef fog near the end of his nirmal life span and anesthesia is very dangerous at his age... to get a lung culture to identify the germ. We refused, ssying simply prescemribe the antibiotic that had worked very well last time. Tge dog recovered.

Also...they are not good at advising on after care. Ou rv smdog had sn inflamed esophagus and needed to be special vet otherwise pneumonia could recurr. We learned this from our local vet.

Summary, great in treating emergencies and performing surgeries, but overcharge and continually recommend unneccesary treatments, procedures and tests. I suggest NC State emergency clinic in Raleigh.

Will suck you dry

AI Highlights
  • - Elderly pet owners have pets seen weekly for months with no clear diagnosis.
  • - Seek a second opinion and research veterinary hospitals.

My parents are close to 80, very trusting and love their pets. These leeches have had them taking one pet or another (or both) almost every week for almost 8 months and still cannot give them an answer as to what is wrong.

My parents live 1-1/2 to 2 hours away depending on traffic and right now my mom is very upset because after taking their cat there almost weekly for 3 months they were told today "they still aren't sure what the problem is, we may want to start chemo again." And her dog, who has been going there for 8 months "may need surgery again" with no clear reason why. I told her to get another diagnosis or just let her pets go peacefully because these folks are obviously trying to make sure they take my parents for everything they can and what they are doing is not good for my parents or the pets. Sure is good for that hospital wallet, though.

You've been warned. Just like when a person is sick, always get a second opinion and research your hospitals before you go to make sure you are getting one that really cares.

Let 2 puppies die because they would not call in the surgeon for emergency C-Section

  • - Used WhelpWise to monitor labor; 4 puppies (3 at 230–240 bpm, 1 at 140) with emergency C-section advised; delays left 2 dead, 2 delivered.

It has been a few years now but I show and breed Irish Wolfhounds. I use a service called WhelpWise to monitor the progression of labor and the health of the puppies not yet born.

I had 4 puppies, 3 with heart beats of in the 230-240 range and one in distress with a heart beat of only 140. Whelpwise suggested an immediate emergency C-section and even called VSH to let them know that I was on my way and to have the surgeon there ready for an emergency C-section. After 3 hrs. and waiting and waiting and waiting we found out that they had just called the surgeon and after 4 hrs.

there two of the puppies were dead and only two were delivered via C-section after 4 hrs.

of waiting plus the one hour it took me to get there. They are a disgrace and apparently only have newly licensed vets in charge of emergency care which should never happen as they don't know what to do in a real emergency.

  • - Two sedatives were given and charged.
  • - Bladder stones caused urinary retention; pain remained.
  • - No catheterization; dog stayed 7 hours; later cost $1100.

I took my dog to this hospital and rather than care for her they gave her two different sedatives which I had to pay for twice. She had urinary retention due to bladder stones and they did not relieve the pain or the stones.

The female doctor tried to get me to leave her and pay $1000 rather than the $500 for the two shots. They were supposed to catheterize her and never did. I agreed for the sedation and catheter. But, because they wanted the extra money they did not do it as discussed.

So, my dog was there for 7 hours in pain. She said their surgeon could do surgery for $4500-$5500!!!

I came back to get her though they had not done anything but given her shots and she was still crying. I took her to our regular vet the next morning and he did the procedure for $1100.

Veterinary Speciality Hospital in Cary- DO NOT GO THERE

AI Highlights
  • - Two techs lifted my dog and he fell off the gurney.
  • - The admin gave little apology; avoid this place and go to NC Vet School ER or Holly Springs.

DO NOT GO to this place…I requested help getting my dog out of the car. Two techs picked him up and put him on the gurney and he FELL BACKWARDS OFF OF IT.

Their response: He didn't hit his head? Really? OMG. The Hospital Administrator did not say much…not even an apology.

The ER Dr diagnosed congestive heart failure so I had to put him down.

So much for a dignified death. Bounce him in the parking lot first…..Definitely go to the NC Vet School ER or Holly Springs…..so sorry I went here for my sweet dog to suffer even more in his last hours…..

I sympathize with your experience since your pet was put-down. I have to say I've had two separate experience with two brothers (at different times) who were both near death and they responded quickly and saved both.

I can't speak for the orderlies, but the physicians were extrodinary. One of the two just passed at VSH due to condestive heart and renal conflicting problems.

These people have added insult to injury by failing to respond to several emails concerning the death of our pet. After depositing $2000 dollars with them and receiving a phone call from the vet on duty reporting that the animal was dead 21 hours after admission and in the next ten minutes being told that the animal was still alive only to see the animal die 90 minutes later, I find it astonishing that they will not respond to my questions concerning additional charges of $1,643 since I was never told that the original $2000 had been expended.

Unacceptable animal care

AI Highlights
  • - Avoid Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas.
  • - Claims care was by junior staff with no supervision, causing a pet's death.

I urge you to under all circumstances avoid taking your animal for care to any Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas. In the Triangle of North Carolina you have the option of turning to the North Carolina Veterinary School facilities. You can Google me to validate my credentials and credibility and evaluate my authority to give this advice and make this recommendation. The care provided at Veterinary Specialty Hospitals was by junior people with inadequate training and absent supervision resulted in the death of a treasured pet.

AI Highlights
  • - Ultrasound techs weren’t available and not disclosed.
  • - Costs ranged $2,000–$3,500, after-hours fee $120.
  • - We waited over an hour and won’t return.

This place is horrible. They will do anything to get you through the doors and charge you for unnecessary costs.

We took our cat to our normal vet for blood work and found out she was having kidney failure. They sent us over to VHS to get an ultrasound and confirmed with them that the ultrasound technicians were there. When we showed up they quickly got us into a room and took the cat to the back, making us think she was getting prepped for the ultrasound. They brought her back very quickly and then we sat in the room for over an hour before the vet came to talk to us. She then informed us that the ultrasound technicians were not there and our only option really was to leave her over night for the chance that the technician could come in on a Saturday. They said in all the visit with ultrasound would cost us $2,000-$3,500.

When we declined to leave her overnight, they still charged us $120 for an after hours exam fee. Had they told us when we got there that the ultrasound technicians are not available we would have left immediately to go back to our normal vet. But their hiding the truth cost us valuable hours and we had to pay for them to tell us the same information our normal vet had just faxed over to them.

We will never take any of our pets here again.

Do not go to VHS in Cary NC

AI Highlights
  • - Reviewer warns against VHS in Cary NC and cites Dr. Eward as incompetent.
  • - Claims the practice lies to clients, overcharges, and is a racket.

Do not under any circumstances go to VHS in Cary NC for your pet. Specifically do not see Dr.

Eward who is totally incompetent and a liar to boot. That entire practice will just clean out your bank account, lie to you, not care about your pet and is generally just a racket. This is absolutely the worst practice I have ever been to and I have owned a lot of dogs. You want to believe the vet when you bring your pet in, but be careful, they are just a racket and want $$$.

NO GOOD DOCTORS HERE. DO NOT ENTER!!!!!

There are other places with more care and expertise for a cat. Other places that can see your animal in an emergency and will not over charge or misdiagnose the issue.

This is not a place for cat care. My cat had not eaten for three days and was retching without results. I took him to VSH because I was told by another vet they could do endoscope to see if there is anything in the stomach stuck. Check-in was smooth and the wait to see the Vet was short.

The Vet explained that an ultrasound would be performed and to return at 1:30 for the results and next course of action. I called at 1:00 to see if they were ready for me to return. They were not able to say if the ultrasound had been done and to call back in 30 minutes. At 2:00 I was told they would call me when the ultrasound had been completed.

It was 10:00am when I left my cat and they still had not got to him. At 2:30 I called and said I was coming to get him. They put the vet on the phone who said he just completed the ultrasound and that the cat has a linear obstruction in the intestine and surgery was needed. The cost jumped an extra $1000.

With a total of $5000 and lack of action, I decided to take my cat elsewhere. They were happy to fax a copy of the ultrasound report to another vet. When I went to pick-up my cat, I asked for a copy of the ultrasound and blood work. I got a report but no pictures.

Was told they don’t save pictures. Here comes the unbelievable part. The new vet conducted the surgery based on the report of this ultrasound only to determine there was no obstruction. There was nothing in the stomach or intestine.

My cat was subjected to an unnecessary surgery to open his stomach and look for an obstruction that was not there. He had two dried hairballs in the colon. I am out $910 from VHS and another $2000 for the surgery at another vet. So don’t take your cat there.

There are other places that can care for a sick cat. Give a correct diagnosis and save you money. I spoke to several vets that day. One was right on when she said some cats stop eating and retch when they are constipated.

An exam of the belly would have found this without the need of an ultrasound. However, that would have been a smaller bill.

What ever you do don't go to VSH in Cary NC

AI Highlights
  • - The doctor caused my dog's death due to incompetence.
  • - The clinic is described as profit-driven and uncaring.
  • - They recommend VSRH in Cary or NCSU instead.

Dr. Eward in Cary at Veterinary Specialty Hopsital was responsible for me having to euthanize my dog.

Her incompetence and complete lack of care not to mention botching an operation led to my dogs death. This place is just a cash cow for operations and if you review many places on the web you will see that they are just after the money. They don't care about your pet and will bleed you dry. Go to VSRH in Cary or NCSU.

Anywhere but this place and this Dr. Unfortunately, vets can kill your pets and there really isn't anything you can do about it but get the word out for other people to be wary.

This place looks good on the outside, and they talk a good game, but they are a horror story. Just research what other people have to say and what happened to them, and you will not ever take a pet here.

Very surprised to find this comment. She is generally regarded as the best around.

Many people I know who work in the veterinary field send their pets to her. She saved my dog with cancer and was the epitome of kindness and compassion.

I can't believe someone could have a bad experience with her or VSH.

Never heard her name before so I doubt she is the best around. Many of he vets in this clinic have been repremanded for tings before.

Do your research. I suppose it is like any doctor, you are going to find a few people that are satisfied with them, but all in all this clinic as a whole is just out there to make money. I have spent enough time sitting in their lobby and having two pets worked on to know that they run them in and out pretending concern, but there are at least 60 plus stories I could access where they have been uncaring, unfeeling and negligent, not to mention just taken the money and run. Don't forget that you really have no recourse against vets when they abuse, neglect, misdiagnose, or kill your pet.

They don't lose their license, rarely get fined, not even a slap on the wrist. This is evidenced by the two or three people that just this year have had pets killed by negligence of vets, it was admitted and nothing was done to the vet. If your pet is killed, there will be nothing done, even if it is clearly the vets fault. Most people don't sue as it is costly and based on the last case (Shera v.

NCSU) even if you have spent thousands and the vet admits liability, you spend even more on legal fees and get no where. Vets know they are untouchable. Dr. Eward is not "the best around." She talks a great game and rests on her and her husbands creditials.

That doees not make a good doctor and she like all vets, make serious mistakes. She just doesn't own up to them as she has a god complex. Be very careful who you are duped by.

This clinic is not a good place. Trust me.
