Refusal to honor warranty
I purchased a Hoover Power Path Pro XL Upright Carpet Cleaner, Model FH51101, from a Home Depot store on December 18, 2016. It purportedly had a two-year warranty. When it ceased spraying from its stair cleaning attachment and began discharging dirty water while in use earlier this year, I contacted Hoover Customer Care. I was told that if I supplied anything showing that I purchased it within the past two years, nothing more would be required to obtain warranty service.
That was untrue. Within the past year, TTI has largely stopped honoring its warranties. First, it stopped accepting its own serial numbers to determine whether a product was supplied to a vendor less than two years before a consumer submitted a claim. Second, it began requiring that the consumer keep the original sales receipt to obtain warranty service.
I didn’t see any notice on the box my carpet cleaner came in advising that it was critical to keep the sales receipt. When I opened the box to assemble the cleaner, I had long since disposed of the receipt.
I printed out the Home Depot In-Store e-Receipt showing that on December 18, 2016, I purchased the Hoover Carpet Cleaner.
TTI Floor Care rejected the Home Depot In-Store e-Receipt on the basis that it was not the original sales receipt. I have since spoken to TTI Floor Care’s customer service personnel twice, who conceded that they have no control whatever over the warranty department and that their representations that anything showing that their product was purchased within the past two years is sufficient for warranty purposes is untrue. The authorized Hoover vacuum warranty service provider to whom I delivered my vacuum has also contacted the TTI Floor Care warranty department at least twice and has been told that without the original invoice, TTI Floor Care will not approve warranty service. This is nothing short of consumer fraud.
Preferred solution: Honor the warranty
