To alert anyone that tows a trailer of potential issues with tire failure.
I replaced the original tires on my 2016 Passport Elite camper trailer on April 10, 2023. On May 13, 2026 the left front tire blew causing significant damage to my RV.
The tire was a Trailer King 225 75R 15 load range E tire. It was properly inflated to 80 psi at the start of my trip.
Approximately 400 miles into a 992 mile trip, at mile marker 46 on the [GEOGRAPHIC_DATA] it blew tearing off the camper fender, damaging the underskirt in front of the tire, tearing wires loose and ripping *** in the floor.
I accepted this as a random failure. Things happen.
I installed the spare and went onto my scheduled stop at a campground at [GEOGRAPHIC_DATA] on the WK.
The following morning I had the tire replaced with a competitive brand and proceeded to our next stop.
I checked the air pressure in all tires to include the spare and all were correct.
Midway into this leg I checked the tires by simply touching them to see if any were overheating. No issues, all just warm to the touch.
When we arrived at our next stop I observed the rear tire that was behind the originally failed tire appeared low.
I checked it and it was at 40 psi. It was at 80 335 miles earlier when we started out.
I replaced it with the spare. I could not find a replacement in the area, nor would the Walmart at [GEOGRAPHIC_DATA], KY look at the tire to determine cause. They refuse to service trailer tires at that location.
Taking a leap of faith we did the last 250 miles of the trip without a spare.
When we got to our final destination, our summer place, I reinflated the failed Trailer King tire and found it to be leaking through the inside sidewall in three places.
I have since replaced the three remaining Trailer King tires on the trailer with tires that match the one that replaced the original failed Trailer King. Obviously not Trailer King.
I tell this to alert anyone with Trailer King tires to beware. I also fault myself in this issue as I should have installed a tire monitoring system on my trailer.
This has been addressed.
This story is two fold. Beware of Trailer King tires and install a monitoring system if you do not have one.
The experience has cost me a$1000 deductible plus four tires and a long trip to get the trailer repaired.
One thing I failed to mention is the tires had approximately 5400 miles total on them. Limited sings of tread wear and no obvious issues otherwise.
I would have replaced them if there had been.
