Verified ReviewerTerrible Products, Service, Price
- - Hemp hearts cost $19; Red Barn has $5.99.
- - Alberta potatoes cost twice Root Cellar's.
- - Hours changed to 9 am with no notice; site still shows 7 am.
They are outrageously expensive (hemp hearts $19 - the same exact size bag at Red Barn is $5.99. Mini potatoes (from Alberta) are twice as much as they are at Root Cellar).
They got rid of all of their name-brand dry goods and replaced them with that crap Compliments but didn't bother to reduce the price. Today, much to the surprise of many shoppers waiting outside the store for it to open at 7 am, they posted a sign saying they changed their hours to 9 am (no notice, no warning, heck, even their website still says 7 am). They have no idea how to serve a community.
Some families can only shop at this hour - they don't have a car and so need to plan. Idiots!
User's recommendation: Go to Fairway Market and Root Cellar - both local to the Island and much better service.
Thai Chicken Soup very watery and not up to previous soups I've bought
Watery Thai Chicken Soup and very little chicken very noticeable as I buy 2 every 2 weeks for years.
- Love the variety and selection of food
- Very pricey
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: Please check Thai Chicken Soup and notice how watery it is now compared to 1 month ago and very little Chicken
Experience with difference between when Campbells owned Thrifty's and now that Sobeys own is.
- - Alex not the owner; he died years ago.
- - Ernie left Thrifty's for Market.
- - Thrifty overcharges; prices stay high after federal orders.
Alex and Ernie should not be mentioned as though they are still the owner operators. Alex died several years ago, Ernie left Thrifty's to start the Market stores.
Thrifty in general overcharges for their products. The prices are not coming down when Federal government ordered them to do so.
No clock on front wall so customers can check their shopping time - removed on purpose to keep customers buying.
User's recommendation: shop elsewhere
Price of smoked pork hocks
- - Smoked pork hocks at Thrifty in Fairfield plaza rose 10.46/kg to 16.51/kg.
- - Pork hock is mainly bone, fat, and skin with little meat, used in pea soup.
At the Thrifty store in Fairfield plaza, a couple of weeks ago the price of smoked pork hocks was 10.46/kg. Now it is marked at 16.51/Kg.
Please explain to me why there has been this gigantic increase or is it a typo.
The pork hock is mainly bone, fat and touch skin.
with very little actual meat. It is an important ingredient in making pea soup.
Shocked at at high high prices
Very high prices, week by week gets worse, and don't care for the scene card. Think Ill do most of my shopping elsewhere.

Verified ReviewerFood poisoning
- - I bought a turkey and cranberry roll from the deli on April 5, 2022.
- - Two hours after eating, I had abdominal pain with diarrhea and nausea overnight.
Morgan Crossing Thrity Foods delicatessen sandwich.
April 5/2022 approx. 5pm
The purchase of a turkey and cranberry roll from the deli counter.
Two hours after it was consumed for supper at 6pm on the same day, I experienced severe abdominal pain, later followed by repeated projectile diarrhea and nausea.
This lasted for a whole sleepless night. The following evening (as I write this) I am still suffering with miserable abdominal discomfort and a total loss of appetite - not to mention sleep deprivation.
- Convenience
Preferred solution: You made me extremely ill! What price would you put on that?
User's recommendation: Be deeply suspicious about the freshness of food from this deli. Never consume any food from there if it appears in any way far less than fresh. i.e. dry stale buns, store made fruit-topped cakes etc., when the fruit may not have been cakes etc., may not have been properly washed. I once witnessed an employee putting unwashed blueberries straight from their container onto cheese cakes. When I queried her on this, she was surly, saying "We've never had any problems with it!" Appalling!
To complain about the Complements Mozarella chees
- - Compliments Mozzarella does not brown and becomes paste.
- - Other brands do not have this issue.
- - I informed dairy personnel.
- - We shop Broadmead weekly.
We make home make pizzas and on two occasion we have purchased the Compliments Mozzarella cheese and on both occasions the cheese will not brown up. It turns into a blob of paste.
Whoever is custom packing this product is providing a low quality cheese. All the other brands you carry do not do this just the compliments brand. I have informed the dairy personnel.
We shop the Broadmead location every week. I have also found that your competitor's house brand Country Grocer does not do what yours does.
- Convenient
Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution
User's recommendation: Not to buy this product unless it is improved
Another store to watch out for in Courtenay is Thrifty's
- - Thrifty Foods BC recalls roasts after label mix-up.
- - Courtenay store has slow Interac lines and poor service; wallet was lost at the counter.
XL Foods beef recall expanded in B.C. - British Columbia - CBC News
www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/.../bc-x Oct 2012 – Thrifty Foods spokesman Ralf Mundel confirmed a label mix-up at one of its stores has resulted in some mislabelled roasts being recalled.
That is bad, but in Courtenay the way they have the customer service set up, is awful too. It never fails when you are using the interac pos machine there will be sometimes four or five clerks pushing through, coming in and out through that flip door they have, so they disrupt your rhythm or looking over your shoulder when you put your password in the machine.
I actually lost my wallet at that counter, cause of that confusion and the big blonde woman refused to look in the secure room for me, and I was almost in tears before the manager went in to look, and there was, with my $40 dollars missing. That is when I through out my points card, to limit the confusion I get at that desk.
They wonder why people are not shopping downtown? Everything is so slow, beside the rudeness they show to people and getting harassed, they are so slow.
