I booked a table for my partner's birthday treat, but we had to wait over 6 months before a table was available. I am vegetarian so I checked that they have vegetarian options and was told that The Sportsman has vegetarian options.
However, when we arrived on Friday, 13th July, there were no vegetarian options. However, the lady who greeted us said that I could have one of the vegetarian starters as a main course. When it arrived it was just that - a tiny tart about 2cm in diameter on a large plate. The vegetables were boiled potatoes and over-boiled courgettes (really soggy and bland).
The plate still looked rather empty for a main course so we complained - and I was then served mashed potatoes!! My vegetables were almost inedible courgettes, boiled potatoes and mashed potatoes! My partner had belly of pork on which the skin was as tought as a rubber tyre, it had not been scored nor roasted to crackling; it was almost impossible to cut. This was without doubt the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant.
I wrote a polite letter of complaint which was ignored, so one must conclude that giving boiled potatoes and mashed potatoes as vegetables is routine in this seriously over-rated place.
If you are a vegetarian DO NOT GO TO THIS PATHETIC RESTAURANT - and if you are a meat-eater, do not try their rubberised belly of pork. A one-start rating is generous.
Preferred solution: An apology and acknowledgement of the misleading ínformation and poor quality of the meal.
