*** Yankees

They just got me. My Hewlitt Packard laptop fresh out of the box sent me a pop up that said to call a number immediately, my bank account was being hacked.

My gut feeling was that it was a scam, and a rude guy with an Indian accent suckered me into paying $199.00 to prevent hackers from "stealing my identity." I wasn't able to use my computer for an hour, they had control of it, but when I was finished paying them I went online and everything written about yankee tech is that it's a scam. I should have went with my gut feeling, it's always right.

I got what I deserved for not listening to my conscience, but I have to ask- how is it Microsoft is selling computers that have these pop up screens that look totally legitimate, with "tech supporters" posing to be with Microsoft but aren't, and getting away with it? Why aren't they behind bars?

Tech Yankee scam

Alex called under the guise of being with Microsoft. Takes you into your computer to show you how your machine runs so poorly with all the errors.

That the errors are from a deadly virus and needs to be eradicated immediately but by them...remotely. Suddenly, there is a comment they need $199.00 for this clean up and without thinking, as it is MICROSOFT, you agree. Only to find out it is an Indian company putting the scam on you. When you talk to them, they later say, no, they didn't purport to be from Microsoft but they do initially.

Why would I turn over my computer to some company I have no experience with when I have a level 3 tech doing my computer work who works for Northwestern University Hospital System in the Chicago area.

He assured me this "virus" was one conquered about 6 or 7 years ago! With AVG and Malware, I have plenty of protection.
