Back then, I faced the daunting task of returning to work after 12 years as a stay-at-home-mom. I had a 90s-era degree and a resume full of prior jobs like 'MarCom Associate,' but knew my skills were horribly out of date. I turned to Social Media Examiner to learn all I could. When I got an email announcing their conference--in my home town--I got excited.
There was no way I could afford it, but I followed the tip of a friend and offered to work for free. I'd read on the blog that you should tell your story; let your readers get to know you, so I kept it real: "I left the corporate world in 2000. Marketing concepts are the same," I wrote, "but all the tools have changed. At my last job, I was doing print ads and bingo cards, remember those?" Something must have clicked, because I got a phone call from a nice guy named Phil.
I was IN as a volunteer.
The conference came. I arrived early, stayed late, jumped at the chance to do the grunt work nobody else wanted, and was the best darn human arrow EVER.
