Good Car, Terrible Dealership
- - Advertised Apple CarPlay was not in the 2017 Kia Soul +.
- - No response from dealer after promised fix, and buyer may pursue legal action.
Short version:
Be EXTREMELY careful buying from Shawnee Mission Kia - they advertise features on their car listings then when you find out they refuse to do anything about it. This is transparently false advertising.
Long version:
I bought a 2017 Kia Soul + from the Shawnee Mission Kia used car division on 6/18. One of the main reasons I went with this particular vehicle was the advertised "Apple CarPlay" functionality which comparable listings lacked (see the attached photo). I bought the car and after a day of waiting for the certification process to be completed I took it home.
That's when my trouble started.
When I got the car home and followed the directions in the car's manual to pair my phone and set up CarPlay, I learned the car didn't actually have the feature at all. I called my salesperson and when I didn't get an answer I emailed as well. Finally 3 days after my car's purchase I got a response.
My salesman agreed that this was a mistake and asked for time to talk to people and assured me they would "make it right". After my exchanges with him that day I haven't heard a single thing from the dealership. I've tried calling and emailing him multiple times, I've tried emailing the general manager multiple times, I've even tried emailing the customer service account of Group 1 Auto (their corporate owner). No answer from any of them.
I'm now faced with the choice of whether to pursue legal action simply because they won't respond to something that was very clearly their mistake. I don't want to sue anyone. I don't want to go around posting negative reviews, or filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau, or filing complaints with the Kansas Attorney General. I don't want the hassle of doing any of that. But I'm now at a point where a lawsuit may be the only option available to me simply because they won't return a call or an email.
All I have wanted from the beginning are the features that were advertised and that I agreed to purchase. I don't understand their refusal to respond to me and rectify a situation that, at most, would have cost them a couple thousand dollars to fix. Instead they have an extremely disappointed customer who will instead cost them tens of thousands in lost revenue by doing his best to ensure no one he knows buys from them.
Go buy a Kia - that's fine. Just buy it from someone else. Shawnee Mission Kia simply can't be trusted.
Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution
Bad service department won't honor warranty.
- - Shawnee Mission Kia charged $130 for diagnostics upfront.
- - Lawrence Kia diagnosed a cracked hose next day and fixed under warranty at no charge.
Terrible service. Nothing but a cash grab.
I brought in my fiance's 2016 model a few days ago because the air conditioner stopped working. They looked at it for a few minutes and told me it was going to be $130 for diagnostics and wouldn't consider doing any warranty work until we paid in advance for the diagnostic.
I immediately called Lawrence Kia to see about an appointment, they got me in next day, within 3 minutes had diagnosed that a hose was cracked and breaking apart, and had the car fixed under warranty at no charge to me, including a recharge of the AC system.
It obvious that Shawnee Mission Kia wanted us to pay that $130 up front so they could then charge Kia for the warranty work as well. Abysmal service.

Shawnee Mission Kia - Customer Care Review from Wichita, Kansas
- - Buying process was quick and painless.
- - Aftercare is horrible; the car was deemed a total loss.
- - Gap paperwork delays and blurry docs hinder the claim.
The buying process was quick and painless. The after care is HORRIBLE!!
My car was deemed a total loss. I contacted the finance department to get documents needed for gap claim. Was told to come to the dealership and they would give me the documents. I get to the dealership and get told gap has to send me paperwork before cancelling the service contract.
So I wasted an hour and a half of vacation time for nothing. I told Ed in finance what I needed. He argued with me and told me I didn't need all that. He called gap while I was there for them to "walk me through things".
Not once did he ask about needed documents. Three days later Gap is still requesting the documents I asked for. Called the dealership and spoke with Ed. He faxed documents, but gap says "they are too blury".
Called and spoke with someone in finance dept 10-28-16 to request the documents be sent to me so that I can submit them. I am told "we have current customers and this isn't important". Now I will have wasted more time to go to the dealership to get the documents I need. Not only have they lost another sale but I will continue to spread the word on how horrible their after care is to customers.
It is unprofessional to be told you're not important and it's just bad business. I suggest you go to a different Kia dealer if you are looking for a Kia.
Shawnee Mission Kia Commercial Review

Shawnee Mission Kia Kia Car Trade-in Review from Gardner, Kansas
- - Pre-approval for a new car; steered to a co-signed newer used car.
- - Trade-in value: $500 down to $100.
- - Carfax requests ignored; bait-and-switch concern.
Called Shawnee mission Kia and got my daughter pre approved on a new car over a used car. I her mother called them to reconfirm her pre-approval and wanted to give her my car as a trade in sight unseen per the service manager.
They would give me 500 for car trad in no problem. We went in next day and went to new car sales when the salesman now said she would need a co-signer for new car so it's better to get in on a used car. They hold her she could only be approved on a newer used car. They showed her one car.
I asked them if she could look at others and they claimed this one car was only one available in her approval range. I asked for car fax and the salesman made fun of me asking for it teaming up with my son who didn't believe in negotiating. Them they gave news trade in was now only worth $100 instead of $500 sight unseen deal already made. I started seeing the bait and switch reality and I could see where they were not giving my young daughter any options using her credit risk as a tool.
I see where the credit companies would try to take advantage but then the sakes company too? Aren't they getting a commission at any rate? They gave her 0 options but what they wanted her to do and never produced the car fax asked for three times. I smelled the bait and switch and was not going to allow this company to take advantage of my nieve daughter or her mother.
I'm too smart for Shawnee mission Kia!
Double trouble
- - Referred to Shawnee Mission Kia; Al helped and a 2013 Optima at 15,800 sold.
- - Price rose to 16,900 after year/miles were checked; I won't recommend.
I was referred to Shawnee mission kia from a family friend and figured i was put in right hands. At first it started off great.
I was given Al as my sales rep and he was great (at first). We test drove a optima 2013 loaded for 15800. It was perfect i fell in love with the car and was ready to fill out paper work to see if i got approved. During that process i went outside to take a picture of the car and there was a SOLD sign in the window.
Disappointed i was ready to leave but Al insisted there would be another car of my liking. He showed me a 2014 kia optima that was not loaded but had everything but the navigation and it had 20,000 less miles. He told me since a car got sold out from under me (first strike) then he would hold his word on 15,800 from the previous car. I agreed we went back to do paperwork and to see if i could get approved.
That night i found out i was approved but that was for $381 a month on a 19% interest rate!!! ummmm NOO! i went else where and got a cash loan for 17,000 with payments of $300 a month with 9% interest. Seemed more reasonable so i told them i could do the deal and was ready to buy.
Then i was informed that he didn't realize the year and miles on the car and upped my price from 15,800 to 16,900. (strike two) I'm sorry but that is horrible business. You knew the year and the miles on the car because you ran the numbers the first time for my approval. I agree the car is worth that price but when you run numbers by a customer you don't up the price when i'm ready to sign the deal.
I am extremely disappointed on how i was handled and i will not ever recommend someone to do business with those type of people. They can not be trusted and can't stand by their word.

If you been mistreated by Shawnee Mission Kia or upside down, Whoever lets come together for justice. Deshonnon Daniel or deshonnon daniel @***.com.
This business has no structure. Mechanics doesn't have certification, plus drug organization. Carver, Isdrayo, William (a.k.a billy), David morgan, Azar Bruce, Chris Winnas, and Kurt Ellerman, Tonney(tuner.a.k.a) plus more. Stephon got fired because of David Morgan stole trade-in and new cars.
I need more claims to prove the injustice of this company.John Sims told Mr. Daniel that he have to protect the old Jews ritual from the tail to the head.
This is the General Managerment. I still pray.
Shawnee Mission Kia finance lot sales manager rude and unprofessional
- - Sales manager spoke confrontationally, saying the deal should not have happened.
- - I dropped her card and walked out; no other customers were present.
I went to trade in my vehicle at the dealership. After calling and getting the payoff and looking over my paperwork the sales manager (title from her business card) started taking a hostile tone with me asking how I got the deal I had on this vehicle and telling me I never should have gotten the car for that price and payments.
She actually said "that should have never happened. Why did they let you do this?" as if I was at fault for the deal I was offered. She was very confrontational. Funny thing is the same finance manager?
that approved my terms the first time was still there in her office but the sales manager never said anything to her about approving the deal she was complaining about.
I dropped her card on her desk, got up and walked out.
No other customers came in the entire time I was there. I guess I know why.
Car dealer games are alive and well at Shawnee Mission KIA
- - Paperwork took longer than expected, so we left and planned to return.
- - Financing was approved for a model they chose, not limited to that model.
We visited Shawnee Mission KIA on Thursday, the paperwork GAME took longer than we had available, so we left and made plans to return on Friday a.m. After I called THEM twice, we were told financing was approved, using a car model they chose to 'plug in' but that we would NOT be limited to that particular car.
Today when we returned, we were told that they would show us only the One model They had picked, because that would be the BEST deal for us - we were driven to another lot away from their office and first car they offered to show us had a large scrape and dent on driver's door... after our objection, the salesman called back to finance person, then tried to show us another vehicle of Their choice that appeared to have been backed into something, since the rear bumper (fiberglass) was cracked.. We declined to drive that one as well.
To say that we are discouraged and Very frustrated is a gross understatement. I had heard good things about Shawnee Mission KIA however, the place we visited to try and find a reliable auto was NOT a good experience.
