LP Tank bracket problems

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We bought our scamp 2 years ago and took it on a North Carolina to Florida camping trip. We decided to have the dual propane tanks installed when we ordered the trailer. Prior to leaving on the trip I did the pre-trip check. Lug nuts tight, lights work, and propane bracket tight. Half way through the trip I realized that the propane tanks were loose and I found that the long bolt that holds the bracket was bent. The wing nut was still tight but because the bolt was bent the tanks' flanges were bending. I bought a heavy duty tie down strap to get us home. I decided to switch from dual to single tanks and ordered the parts from Scamp. The parts are 2 metal straps and a single regulator. The straps hook to the flanges on the tanks and bolt to the angle iron under where the tank sits. There were no instructions in the package. I figured it out. When I changed the dual regulator to the single regulator the supply hose to the tank was too short to mount the regulator on the tongue. I called Scamp and after explaining how I had mounted the tank the person there said it should fit. It doesn't . Instead, I used 2 stainless steel hose clamps to clamp the regulator to the post where the front trailer jack is.

Pros:
  • Light weight
Cons:
  • Quality of propane mounting
  • Not for tall people

Preferred solution: No solution needed.

User's recommendation: Do some homework before you buy a Scamp. You can probably get a better trailer for less.

Expensive Electrical Problems - Would Not Honor Warranty

The 120 volt electrical system would not work on our first night of camping in our brand new 2018 13' Scamp camping trailer. We drove 200 miles back to the factory n Backus, MN for repairs.

They discovered the problem to be an interior outlet that was shorting out the system.

5 days later on the same trip the 12 volt electrical system completely failed. After discussion with Scamp (Eveland's Inc.) we took the trailer to a local camping trailer dealer for repairs. They had to replace the power converter and the battery to fix the problems.

Scamp disavowed any responsibility for the issue and we we were stuck with an expensive repair bill on a brand new camper.

Scamp's customer service is terrible and their warranty is worthless. We are extremely dissatisfied customers!

I bet that the shorted outlet caused the problem with the converter.

I have had this problem too. 2018 13 ft Scamp.

I thought I was doing something wrong. This is the third battery.

Now, I think it is a converter problem. Very irritating the trailer cost a lot.

Scamp needs to know potential buyers read this stuff. There are other brands with better reputations to choose from.

Casita has great customer service. I can't believe Scamp bailed on you.

I'm a new camper. Reading reviews is important to me I was hoping to find positive Scamp reviews. So far, it's quite a disappointment.

"97 Scamp 16' Standard Far from Pissed

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I purchased a good-looking on the outside 16' Scamp Standard basically third hand. I had quite a few repairs that were normal for something 19 years old. Thermostat/regulator on hot water heater, rebuilt 3-way refrigerator, 12 volt and 110 volt elements were bad, shower drain pump was replaced. All trailer wiring had to be traced to figure out two previous owners jury rigging. Installed12.5 into existing mount for a 10kw unit mounted in of all places, where the port-a-potty would normally have been stowed in a Scamp without the built-in shower/toilet arrangement. The first owner was very clever in engineering this modification along with mounting a 6.5kw Onan on the trailer's tongue. I've recut the wheel wells to eliminate the 13" factory wheels and tires to make room for 14" replacements. Even with the nominal repairs I've been so impressed with Scamp, while visiting my sister in Indiana, I drove up to Backus, Minnesota to tour the Scamp Factory, pick-up some parts and salivate over the 19' Deluxe! I did this because I live in my 16 footer and could use the extra room while travelling, my plans were side-tracked from sticker shock at $26,888.00 is kind of out of my league on disability income! Hopefully for the time being? Beautiful well built trailer otherwise! Hate to be the only person Not complaining but, I would buy a the 19 foot Deluxe immediately if I had the funds!

I've had a 1999 Scamp for three years now. Love it, especially compared to all the horror stories I've heard from other RV brands.I took the trailer back to the factory to have additional equipment installed.

They got me in quick, did the installs while I waited, were very reasonably priced, and even through in a new door curtain for me when I asked to buy one. GREAT service department.I now have on order a brand new 16 foot with additional features in prep for the possibility of going full time. While few products are perfect and totally without defects of one form or another, Scamps are very durable with MUCH fewer opportunities for leaking water to destroy the trailer in a short time, like happens with many other RVs.

Scamp has a long track record of producing very long-lasting, basic travel trailers. They are not cutting edge, but they are dependable and durable.

Unhappy Scampers

Yes we aren't the only ones with issues with our new 16' Scamp! Researched them along with others and thought this was the one. Waited months to get it, picked it up on Aug. 3, 2015 and it went back for repairs before being used the following week. New refrigerator, caulking, loose bolts, windows &a screen door not fitting tight. My husband drove back 6 plus hours to have the refrigerator replaced and issues taken care of. On his way home decided to camp for a night and followed the instructions given to him to start the new refrigerator. He was told to light the stove to let the gas run before lighting the frig and there was a leak in the stove top! He saw smoke coming out and turned everything off before burning the place down. Said the trailer is filling with mosquitoes which means there is an opening somewhere that they are getting in. We've been so disappointed with our purchase and the "after the sale" treatment that we're pretty sure we're returning this trailer. Was quite surprised by all the problems after hearing so many great things about the Scamp. We are not happy campers!!!

Don't buy a Scamp 5th wheel

Scamp Trailers - Don't buy a Scamp 5th wheel
Scamp Trailers - Don't buy a Scamp 5th wheel - Image 2

I bought a Scamp 5th wheel trailer in January of 2008. Never again. Prior to this I always had truck campers since I live in Alaska.

I decided to get something that I could unload so I could get into difficult areas where all the good fishing was. I read the reviews and thought the Scamp was a good choice. It wasn't.

The thing is falling apart already. The water tank fill port leaked all over the trailer and it wasn't until I pulled it apart that I could find it. There are other issues as well, such as the drawers all falling out once you are moving. The refrigerator doors popped open and broke off due to a real lousy suspension.

The sink in the bathroom is a flimsy plastic contraption that is one jump up from a paper plate. The water that leaked has damaged the plywood sink cabinet as well as the cabinet with drawers on the other side and dry rot will probably be the result.

I know I am a certified building inspector. This was supposed to be the deluxe model and I drove down from Fairbanks, Alaska to pick it up. What a mistake. If this is an example of American craftsmanship, buy Chinese, on second thought don't buy anything and watch these clowns starve to death.

I bought my Scamp in 2015 and found some-things that could have been better assembled but ALWAYS found a way to fix or make it better. As time went on, I found it normal for something (anybody that owns an RV, not just Scamp owners) to have been built or assembled better with their RV.

Over time I’ve camped with groups to find that MANY, and I do mean MANY that owned $100,000 to $150,000 to have lots of problems too (electrical, pump, structural).

FYI: I’ve been on a few Scamp sites on FaceBook that have had good dealings with Scamp and almost everytime got Satisfactory service even including sending out parts free for the newbie Scamper. Go on FaceBook and insert “Scamp” in Facebook’s search bar and find out for yourself.

Plus you will find those that dealt with the same problems you are dealing with and most likely have fixed etc…

Where I put "...$100,000 to $150,000..." I forgot to add "MotorHomes/MotorCoaches".

Thank you for advising the Face Book research.

We've had our USED Scamp 5th wheel for 2 years now and have had NO problems. Think about where you pulled it, the road conditions, etc.

as for the drawers coming open and the fridge doors breaking off ? I have bungee cords on all mine and the cabinet doors, and I don't even haul mine to Alaska.

Better to be prepared. I don't think you should badmouth Scamps just because you weren't smart enough to take some preventative measures.

To Mr. Sourdough Alaska...

I have a very good friend, also from Fairbanks Alaska (maybe you guys are neighbors?) who bought a Scamp and then went on to destroy it by hauling down to McCarthy AK when the road there was a pot hole, washboard, non-paved road to ***. He then complained about Scamp

build quality.

Sorry guys, if you expect a trailer to hold up to that kind of punishment, you better retrofit for destructive abuse.

Guest

This trailer was not made for the back roads of Alaska .. Or any other of that type of roads ...

You say you are a building inspector ... Hmmmm I wonder on that one and would hate to have you inspect any home I would buy .... With commonsence would have told you not to buy the scamp but on the other hand inspect it before you set up ... You see I was a inspector at Chrysler for 35years and learnt that problems happen along they way on anything build ...yes sir even homes , boats , trailers , buildings and ect...

As far as doors opening it is a common problem with all rv ect... Yes I would have been made because I too was but then realized it was my fault ... Of not checking out problems from others ... There are solutions for them ...

As far as the water goes ...well who continued to fill and use the problem ???

Not the trailer but you ... So as you see you are wrong because other had enough commonsence to figure it all out and are quite happy ....need I say more ?????

You obviously don't know what your looking at or have no practical experience with campers. The Scamp line of campers have a very loyal following largely due to to its quality.

True, time gets to us all in various ways.

If reasonable care was shown by an owner then having a 25 year old camper would still be a joy to own.

Guest

I bought a 5th wheel deluxe scamp new in 2001 and have towed it many thousands of miles over all kinds of roads. It's the best thing I've ever bought and would never get rid of it.

Unfortunately, you've run into some unusual problems.

I also have a big box travel trailer, made in Indiana, that I bought at the same time. It's a piece of junk, built poorly, and falling apart.
