Lawyer hasn't responded or done anything on my case

I have a personal injury case and my lawyer hasn't done anything to get medical care, compensation of any type or closure to my case. I am afraid that he has "gotten into bed with them".
He has asked me for monies which I reluctantly paid him, but haven't seen anything come out giving him these funds on my limited income.
I am afraid that he's allowed/allowing the statue of limitations run out so he doesn't have to do anything. Can someone please help me?
