Poor customer service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

The customer service was very poor; I was very dissatisfied. I recently rented a car that was infested with roaches, and had to return it.

Actually, I had to have them come pick it up because it was too infested for me to even drive.

I asked for reimbursement but did not receive any. The manager at the location was very rude and did not really resolve the issue.

Predatory tactics and bogus repair charges

Original review updated Nov 17, 2022

They use predatory tactics to extract money from renters after rentals have been returned. I rented a car from here in May of 2022, and returned it without any visible damage.

After returning the car, I received an email from them asking me to fill out an "incident report".

When I informed them that no incident had occurred, they told me that there were damages to the vehicle, but they refused to provide any pictures of the damage. I did not fill out the incident report, since it was unclear whether that would considered an admission of an incident, and disputed the deposit charge on my credit card.

They then filed a claim with my car insurance company, Geico. It took a few phone calls with them to discover that Rent-A-Wreck did not provide them pictures of the damage either. Geico agreed that I should not be penalized, since there was no accident, but said they were unable to do anything about the charges that Rent-A-Wreck would ask for.

Rent-A-Wreck goes through a third party claims management company, who contacted me a few months later with a claim asking for $1459.79 in damages, $385 in "loss of use", and an $150 administration fee, which came to $1993.79 in total.

The claims agency was able to provide me a picture of the damage, which was a scratch on the *underside* of the front bumper.

Before dropping the car off, I had run my hand along the underside and did not feel anything there, but did not go through the trouble of lying down on the ground to visually inspect it, as it was raining and the ground was wet.

According to Rent-A-Wreck, rather than paint and refinish the scratch, the repair that needed to be done was to replace the entire bumper. When I looked up the shop that had given the estimate, it was one located at the exact same address as Rent-A-Wreck. Meaning that the repairs were happening in house, and Rent-A-Wreck themselves were the ones giving the estimate.

I asked for more details about how they had come to that number for the repair, as I had paid for a bumper to be replaced just a few years ago, and had it cost less than half that. A few weeks later, the claims agency came back with a repair cost of only $500 (my deductible for my car insurance).

I asked for proof that Rent-A-Wreck had even had the bumper replaced, since the scratch was entirely superficial and not visible unless the car was up on a lift.

The claims agency was unable to provide this, but offered to waive the admin fee and reduce the "loss of use" amount.

The fact that they were able to reduce the "loss of use" amount, and there was no proof the car was in the shop, makes me think it's possible the car never had its bumper replaced at all - but obviously I don't have proof of that.

The final cost was $750, which is a very expensive lesson to learn to not rent from this company, and I'm hoping to save someone else the same trouble. If you look on Yelp, Google, the BBB, etc, you will find many other reviews for this business from people with similar experiences.

Wreck of a Company

Prepaid for a weeks rental with Rent a Wreck at Philadelphia International Airport. First Mistake.

It is non-cancellable, no refunds. You are locked in and can't seek a more responsive company. When I arrived at the airport, I proceeded to the "rental car shuttle bus " pick up area. Approximately 40 feet from the "parking lot shuttle bus area".

After 15 minutes of not sighting a "rent a wreck shuttle", but seeing every other agencies shuttle, I called and said "Where's the bus" . I was told I had to call for it. This was not mentioned in my reservation. They told me they were sending the bus in 5 minutes.

After an additional 15 minutes I called and was told they couldn't find me and would send them again. After 10 minutes I called again and was told they would send them again, I explained that I was leaning against the sign that said "rental car shuttles". Then they said I had to be at the "parking lot shuttles " position. I explained it was 40 feet away and I would have seen any "rent a wreck" shuttle that stopped there.

I then asked what color their shuttle was and was told it was blue and silver and had colonial parking on it. It finally arrived about 10 minutes later. No where on the bus did it say "rent a wreck". It took me an hour to get a car that was 5 minutes away because they don't tell you to call for pick-up or that the bus does not identify itself as a rental car shuttle.

The car was not a wreck, but the company is definitely one. Had I not been trapped by paying in advance I would have boarded a shuttle from one of the reputable companies and simply forgotten rent a wreck.

NEVER, EVER PAY IN ADVANCE AND NEVER EVER USE RENT A WRECK. RULES TO LIVE BY.

Rent a Wreck a Disgrace to the Service Industry

The worst service I ever had in North America! I travel often for work. I usually never leave any feedback, but rent a wreck at this location was so appalling, it is a disgrace to the service industry.

I got a first wreck, more like a junk, I was so scared to drive because of what felt like faulty breaks, I had to ask for another vehicle which was brought with low tire pressure light on and absolutely no gas. Who are these people?

When asked, Agnes said it was fine because she had been told by the dealership "A chip in the car needed be reset, that the tire pressure light was ok". She also stated there was 1/8 of a tank. I was very concerned to either get in an accident or get a flat that I immediately went to go to the nearest gas station to fill her up and check the tire pressure (because of the risk of tire explosion). As I thought, the tire pressure light went off and with gas, I was able to use the car for the purpose for which I made this transaction: get from A to B safely.

Oh also on the bill, I paid for a full month and was told I would be refunded for the unused term after two weeks. I used the car for 17 days. I returned it with a full tank and did not get a dime back! I'm currently debating the charge with American Express because it's simply illegal to be charged for a service that has not been used.

I flew in 2 days early because Agnes wouldn't get me a car at my arrival because Agnes had to go to Church. She promised she would pick me up at my Hotel on her way to work. She failed to do so.

Agnes is in appearance a sweet old lady with a cute southern accent, but she will *** over and lie with a big smile on her face. For someone who goes to Church, she clearly has no christianity to herself. Agnes did not behave as a professional would normally behave himself. Agnes overcharged me for a service I did not use.
