Verified ReviewerFraudulent withholding of tenant security deposit funds for normal wear items. Unethical behavior. Poor customer service. Threats.
Please understand this review is in no way retaliatory. This review is both honest and objective and reflects my experience as a tenant of a property managed by this particular RE/MAX agency.
Typically, I do not write many reviews unless compelled to. As for Jeannette Dufresne and her RE/MAX practice in Colorado Springs, I feel a review is in order.
In June 2022, we entered a lease agreement with Jeannete Dufresne's agency, the property management company for this rental property. The house was beautiful, however, some items needed maintenance and/or repair. Upon move-in, we were accompanied by an associate of Jeannete Dufresne's agency.
She documented several items they were aware of, which needed fixing or improvement.
One such item was the side gate. The gate was broken and did not function properly. Presumably, the gate was left open and the wind swung it and broke it. We waited over 2 months before the gate was fixed.
The second item was the railing at the top of the stairs.
It was loose. This was never fixed, even after multiple inquiries with the agency of Jeannete Dufresne. When we inquired, we were treated in a dismissive and belligerent way by her associate, Felicia. This behavior was consistent with both myself and my wife.
This resulted in us filing a complaint with RE/MAX corporate.
Another such item was the lawn. It was nothing but weeds and the tree had been cut down and not replaced, as was the promise made by the associate employed by the agency of Jeannete Dufresne. The backyard was equally messy. There were weeds along the back gate, weeds growing within the decorative stones, etc.
Essentially, it was not attended to upon move-in.
Jeannete Dufresne's agency required a $2,900 security deposit and 1-month rent upon move-in, which I provided. We enjoyed the house and I was never late paying the rent.
Around March 2023, an employee of the agency of Jeannete Dufresne visited the home and documented several maintenance items that required attention. After waiting for over a month for the maintenance to be performed, I called Jeannete and she rudely informed me that "her associate was busy." This unprofessional treatment of customers was consistent across her agency.
In April, the microwave ceased to work and emitted a foul smell. After being without a microwave for at least 3 weeks, and after multiple calls to the agency of Jeannete Dufresne, the microwave was finally fixed.
Other such items were the caulking of the shower in the master bedroom, and stretching of the carpet in the living room. Overall, we took exemplary care of this home and were generally happy.
In May 2023, the microwave once again stopped working. I inquired with the agency of Jeannete Dufresne multiple times. A repairman was sent out but that is the last I saw of him.
Again, I made multiple inquiries with Jeannete and nothing was ever done. At move out, OVER 2 MONTHS after the microwave ceased to work, I still DID NOT HAVE A WORKING MICROWAVE, after inquiring with the agency of Jeannete Dufresne.
The lease was to end on July 31, 2023. I agreed to have the house cleaned professionally and was there during the cleaning. Jeannete Dufresne requested I provide her with invoices/receipts for the agency cleaning the house.
Jeannete learned that I was leaving Colorado and the country for a few weeks after moving out.
Now comes late August 2023, when I received a check for $900 and change, nearly $2,000 lower than my original security deposit, including $400 to have an agency clean a home that I had already paid to have cleaned, AND provided Jeannete Dufresne receipts for! Admittedly, I did not have the carpets steam cleaned, which was required, so I expected a few hundred dollars to be taken out of the deposit. Jeannete took $600 from the security deposit for a house where only 3 rooms were occupied!!
As if $400 wasn't enough, Jeannete Dufresne, without consulting me, took ANOTHER $700+ out of my deposit for "home improvement." Home improvement?! Nearly $200 for "weed pulling." We found the house with a lawn full of weeds, and now I am responsible for paying for issues that they should have done before move-in?!
Another for "caulking of the shower," which was a maintenance item! Another for "painting a board in the mud room." Essentially, Jeannete took this money from my deposit to cover expenses which were the responsibility of her agency to pay for. Jeannette refused to take my calls, and most recently she sent me this email.
"So please stop calling my office and complaining to us or I will have to contact our attorney."
Contact her attorney? Jeannete is simply attempting to silence me to prevent my grievances from being heard.
So, would you consider this ethical behavior?
Jeannete Dufresne knew I was not in Colorado to dispute these charges and has resorted to threatening me with "legal" action for "calling and complaining."
