I am giving them a poor review because there is room for improvement with this company and if people choose to use this company, they need to be active participants in the entire process.

Recommend detailed timeframe, pictures of work site, regular updates. Make sure work is monitored, so screwup’s hopefully don’t occur.

Original review Aug 04, 2025

Our home suffered extensive soot damage due to a gas company incident, leading to a six-month-long cleaning and restoration process managed by Rainbow Restoration in Charlottesville. We had to leave our home with essentially the clothes on our backs.

We had no idea that the process was going to take six months. We lived day to day not knowing when we could move back in and what we needed to be doing. Our experience was marked by poor communication, lack of oversight, and careless treatment of our belongings. Key problems included delayed and inadequate packing of personal items, damage to property during cleaning and restoration, subpar repairs (such as mishandling of countertops— all countertops were minwaxed in an effort to repair a scratch created by the cleaning component of the company and sloppy painting— drips and splatter everywhere), and unsanitary conditions left by workers— urinated all over and around the toilets.

Carpet installation by Sherwin Williams took three repeat visits to correct the initial unprofessional installation. We had to often intervene to document losses and secure appropriate reimbursement from insurance, ultimately recovering significantly more than originally proposed. Despite some helpful individuals (notably the 1800 Pack Out crew and the restoration manager), the overall service from Rainbow Restoration was unsatisfactory and could be described as a nightmare. While many of our issues were ultimately corrected, most of it could have been avoided with better communication and oversight.

We recommend stronger oversight, professional cleaning services when the job is finished, and better communication with clients in such situations.

By the end, we felt more like an insurance claim rather than the homeowner and customer. No company apology for anything.

Pros:
  • Offered one stop shopping to take care of the entire problem
Cons:
  • Initially said we could use our own painters then said no
  • Project manager did not provide guidance on reimbursement from ins
  • Did not provide accurate timeline

Preferred solution: Apology

User's recommendation: Ask for comprehensive timeline, detailed explanation of expectations of all parties involved (homeowner and all staff of Rainbow) and regular updates-including photos. Don't expect them to have your back. Do your homework.
