Profits before people

Kroger #1671946
Retail stores usually say they are not responsible for cart damage and they are correct. This is why it is wise to get full coverage when insuring a car. In your case, in an attempt to save money you chose a high($500) deductible. Not knowing you would ever have to file a claim your decision was correct but your luck ran out. I don't know what the premium difference between, say a $100 deductible or even a zero deductible is with your insurance carrier, but you can just compare the difference between the various deductibles and you will probably find that you saved a few hundred dollars over the years by taking a change and going with the high($500) deductible. You really cannot blame a store for the laziness of customers in not returning their carts to the "cart corral" and subsequent damage to vehicles. Most stores won't allow carts out when there is high wind---at least a responsible retailer won't. The cart boys usually work pretty hard but they are often delegated to other jobs by management which cuts down on their cart retrieval. Bottom line: make sure you are well-insured. Sorry about that.

Microwave Repair

Sears Home Services #1671528
A couple of thoughts: first of all, we are talking about a microwave, not a real expensive appliance and you made the mistake of buying an extended warranty or whatever they called it. Then, you allowed Sears or whomever to mess around with this inexpensive appliance, never fixing it instead of just throwing it out and buying another at your local Walmart, etc. Stores like to con you into buying these extended warranties but they are almost always a waste of money and time for on your part. Dump the microwave, buy another to replace it---certainly not from Sears---and use this as a lesson in saying "no" when they ask you if you want their extended warranty coverage. And, of course happy microwaving.

If your daughter was a dental tech for some 20 years, perhaps you should have consulted her prior to going to Aspen. I expect she has some knowledge, being in the profession, of the kind of work Aspen does. Other than than, we commiserate but your options are limited at this point. Your can file a complaint with the state dental licensing board; contact an attorney for a free consult to see what legal action you can take; or change banks, etc. immediately so no one can take money out of your bank accounts and then tell Aspen or whomever you contracted to pay that you won't pay for inadequate work, the point being why would someone pay for work that is incomplete, ill-fitting, shoddy and potentially dangerous to your oral health. Your experience is just another in a long line of Aspen complaints. Spread the word about your experience-----and see a local dentist in private practice for a much better dental experience.

Terrible experience with Walmart Optical

Walmart #1670446
Sounds like you spent $400 on glasses which seems rather excessive. Know that there is a huge mark-up and much profit to be made in the eyeglass industry. The frames are usually outrageously expensive and of dubious, low quality to begin with and the actual lenses are often not correctly "ground" as they say. Your recourse is, of course to demand Walmart either furnish you a pair of glasses with the correct refraction or refund your money. If they delay, refuse, etc. then just dispute the charge with your card company. On a purchase such as this it is always wise to use a credit card and not cash or a debit card. That being said, it also sounds like the optometrist or whatever Walmart calls them may have made a mistake is the correct prescription for you. That, or someone at the plant where the lenses were ground made a mistake. Who knows? I had a pair of spare glasses made at Walmart last year but the prescription had been from my regular ophthalmologist and all went well. Good luck, but never accept bad results or pay for someone's mistake.

Did you call the number on the back of your card to see what is going on? Do you have alerts from Chase set on your account that will inform you via text, email or phone of any problem? You need to look into these alert messages on your Chase account online. The bad news is that you are correct that Chase fraud department is on overdrive and the very bad news is that when you do call that number on your card, you usually get someone in India who neither understands or speaks the English language and who can't or won't help you even if they could. This is why having a credit card with another bank or, better yet with Discover is so important. You can use the fall-back card for situations when Chase messes with you.

Capital One #1669717
Could it be that your card was "declined" due to the fact that the charges were coming from outside the US? This seems the most likely scenario. You are doing two things incorrectly, from a financial safety perspective: not having at least two credit cards active with you when traveling not only out, but within the states. Card companies are getting very finicky about charges outside your residence locale and will decline charges quickly and without your knowing it until it happens. Also, using the autopay for most any recurring bill might be easy, it can be dangerous when something happens to that card---as you found out. Most banks have a free "bill pay" method by which you can choose when and how to pay these bills when you wish or are away someplace. As for Capital One, I only dealt with them once years ago and was singularly unimpressed with their customer service.

Those who go to any one of the big box stores like Lowe's for a remodeling project and allow a subcontractor hired by the store to do the work can often be rudely surprised at the problems encountered and the quality of the work itself as in your case. While 4 cabinet doors not being acceptable is not really unusual---the fault of the cabinet maker---the problems you experienced with the guy Lowe's used for the installation is more often than not a real problem. I guess, now you know what not to do for the future. The best way to get this kind of work done is to hire, on your own a small contractor not affiliated with a big box store who will work with you on designing what you want done and then helping you pick out the cabinets, etc. from places he has dealt with and knows best. To find a good contractor is the trick and for this you need to talk to everyone you can or know for a recommendation. I have seen complaints about these scams from almost all car rental agencies and it apparently is now something these companies realize they can profit from by claiming you somehow damaged the car, etc. One thing to remember is to never, ever use a debit card for a car rental but use a credit card so you can dispute any scam charge. Better yet, get a credit card for the sole purpose of renting a car and if you run into scam charges, dispute it, etc. and if the bank sides with the car company, just cancel out this "throwaway" card and refuse to pay for something you don't owe. Yes, Chase Bank has farmed out their customer service to India and good luck if you have a need to both understand them or for them to understand what you need. As for the POA, it sounds like your mom has a POA covering your legal matters but not your health matters. You need one for both. However, I don't understand what a health POA would have to do with this situation. Best bet is to have at least two bank/credit union with different institutions---one for your pension to go into and another for your SSA. Never use but one bank for all monetary business. A local credit union usually can give you better personal service and not fend you off to someone in India who is typically almost useless. Check into the POA bit, tho with an attorney. A tip for the future: Most dealerships will perform an oil/filter change and the odds are they will do it correctly. Many now also have a "quick service" oil change facility which works just like all those other fly-by-night quick oil change places you see all over the place. However, one owned by a dealership should be better than most because of their connection to the dealership and the caliber of the guys actually doing the work on your car. In my area, the price for an oil change, tire rotation and the like is about the same as those other joints, but the guys at the dealership-owned place know what they are doing and won't try to sell you something you don't need, eg., shock absorbers, etc. Find out if the dealer who sold you the car has such a facility and try it out for the next oil change.
