CarMax - Buyer Beware of "Refund Policy"

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Was looking at vehicles, want my trusted mechanic that I've known and used for 20 years to give the blessing. Not an option for CarMax.

You cannot according to their policy have anyone (mechanic" touch the vehicle. The vehicle must be purchased first. They back talk this via "7-day full refund policy" However, what they fail to disclose is that you will have to wait for your check to be processed for up to 2 weeks. So now you have no car, and no available resources to purchase until they send the check, which comes from out of state and will likely need to clear the bank hold.

Brilliant strategy. The avoidance game they play is because they have a bunch of idiots in the back, not reputable, certified ASE mechanics. They are also banking on you not catching the issues that are cosmetically hidden. Most major issues won't pop up for a few weeks.

By that point, you are well out of your return window.

Save the aggravation and go to a dealership. Haggle till you get the number you want.

Cons:
  • False claims
  • Very deceptive

User's recommendation: Use them to screen a vehicle, but take the business elsewhere on a purchase.
