Just had an awful experience with JOSE the manager here on 9/7/20 at 4:55pm. That has left a sour and horrible first impression with Mamajuana Cafe in their Queens location. My wife and I were so excited to celebrate our 8 year anniversary today at this establishment. My wife has been craving this place for years so I was so fortunate to do things the right way and make a reservations 2 weeks in advance. A 5:00pm reservation for 2. We were so happy and pumped, we arrived there at 4:55pm just to he safe. Mind you, this is our first time coming here. When I made my reservations, there was no mention of a dress code. And when I did my research on Mamajuana before making my reservations. I never saw any mentions of a dress code. When my wife and I happily arrived. We were stopped by two bouncers. And were denied service because I had on flip flops. At this point, we saw a bunch of female customers dining in flip flops. When we questioned security on this. We were told that's just the way it is. And to go back home and put on some sneakers or something. I understand that they were doing their job. But there's no sign that says "No flip flops for men, ladies only". So I asked for a manager. Because it made no sense at all. The manager JOSE that came out showed a total lack of sympathy and professionalism. When I spoke with him and explained that we're just looking to have fun on our anniversary date. And never saw or were told about this policy when making reservations. He became sarcastic and had his security standing in front of him as if I was going to fight or something. What a way to engage with customers Jose. Especially two locals that have lived in the community for 10 years. You then had the audacity to walk away from me and ignore when I asked for a corporate number to further escalate my complaint. When I tried to reason with him and asked can we at least keep our reservations if we leave and return. He shrugged us off in a dismissive fashion. And said he can't promise us that. Even though he clearly knew I made this reservation 2 weeks in advance. I then had enough and asked for a corporate number, he then sarcastically replied that he's the general manager. And told me to check on social media to see that there's a dress code message. And then security gave me the restaurant number and masked it as their corporate number. Which was all lies after I did a quick and thorough search. I checked on social media and their main website. There are no messages referring to this dress code online. This explains why we so many couple and families were confused and angry when they were denied service just like us. How are you going to enforce something that nobody is aware of. Talk about giving your customers a huge disadvantage. As customers, all we want is to be treated with dignity , honesty, and respect. And you guys made us. I will continue to report this on other major sites including the BBB.
