Northpointe Apartments - If you can afford it, live anywhere but here

Ooooh boy. Where to even start with this place. NorthPointe sounds great at first when looking for a student apartment. It's got free parking, free shuttle to and from campus, gated community, amenities, relatively cheap rent... until you actually live there. This place is nasty. We were told that the unit would be cleaned and renovated by the time we moved in (9 months later) with new flooring and appliances. Nope. It was not only still the old flooring and ancient appliances, it was absolutely DISGUSTING everywhere. Not to mention the broken blinds and window. Probably spent three hours after moving in just cleaning this tiny 450 sq ft unit. So there was the first set of lies. We were also told it would be equipped with BRAND NEW amenities, such as a new fitness center and entertainment room. Also nope, as the entire 10 months I lived there, it was nothing but torn up construction. So it was noisy, horrible to look at, and none of the amenities we were promised were even available or usable. This might not be a problem anymore, but they still lied to us. Next, the shuttle system is absolutely unreliable. Between losing drivers, the bus breaking down every other day, and there being too many people that some had to be left behind, there's no doubt that I would have missed many days of school had I not had friends to drive me. There was one day where absolutely no bus came to campus for several hours, leaving hundreds of residents stranded on campus or unable to get to campus. Completely infuriating. The gate systems were also absolutely terrible. Either they were leaving it open because it was broken (defeating the purpose of only residents with FOBs being able to get in), or the FOBs weren't able to open it, forcing you to wait for someone to come out of the gate to get in. Completely ridiculous, and didn't make me feel very secure knowing they were just leaving it open 24/7. While I didn't personally have a problem with this, many of my friends who also live there tell me how terrible maintenance is. You're lucky if they actually respond to a request you might have, no matter the level of urgency. My friend's roof was leaking terribly the last time it rained, and her dishwasher and both laundry machines had to be replaced because they were unusable. Both of these requests took weeks to even go through, let alone be resolved. The internet is included in your rent, and boy does it show. Absolutely terrible connection, so good luck getting your homework done at home unless you're plugged into the modem. The cable is also pretty spotty, which is lovely when you're trying to catch the season finale of your favorite show. I was also irritated to discover that while there is a dumpster for trash, there is no place to recycle. What the ***? So ridiculous. I just brought my recyclables to a friend's to dump in her bin, but what kind of place doesn't have a place to recycle for over 500 residents? ***. The kids working in the office are doing their best I'm sure, but I haven't had very good experiences with them. They're usually completely unhelpful, especially when it comes to giving out those free gift cards for referrals-- expect to wait a few months and pester them every week for it. They're supposed to send you an email when your packages arrive so you know to come get it, but I had so many problems with them sending me false emails and not having a package, or not getting an email at all and having to check for myself if the package was there. Terrible and a waste of time, honestly. They also lied when I first went to look at units, because I was also told the bed would be queen size, and it turned out to be full. Bottom line? If you can honestly not afford any other student apartments (my tip: find a non-student apartment or a house), you might find this place bearable for a school year. Make sure you're not expecting any of the extras however: know how to catch the city bus or have a friend pick you up, because that shuttle only actually works about 50% of the time. It's relatively quiet except on the weekends, and the units are hit and miss in terms of condition. They're going to show you a beautiful, clean, modern looking model unit, but your unit will likely be darker, dingier, dirtier, and waaaay more worn out, so be prepared. I moved out of there as soon as humanly possible, and am way happier living in a rental house with three friends. My rent is 50% cheaper, it's a lovely, quiet neighborhood, I get to park inside, and I'm not getting ripped off. To *** with NorthPointe.

Julep - Really unclear terms, out $25

I'm a poor college student working 2 minimum wage jobs that loves makeup. Naturally, I was super excited to try out the $2.99 Birthday Box, and was fairly pleased with the products for the price. I couldn't find any information ANYWHERE on the site that indicated that it was a monthly subscription (not a one-time thing), and I also couldn't find any information on how to cancel the subscription. I stupidly assumed that it was over and done with, but nope! I checked my bank account and $25 was charged. This is a lot for me, as it could easily cover a tank of gas, two weeks of groceries, or a new pair of shoes. To those saying to read the fine print: I get it. However, the lack of transparency and clarity on Julep's part about their policies is really unacceptable, as is the inability to cancel subscriptions from online. You know who has time to sit on hold for hours on end? Not me, and probably not a lot of other people. All this kind of information should be clearly stated on the account page, which it's not. I'm going to try and return to sender once it gets here, then call about a refund. If I manage to get it, I might consider buying their products in the future. If not, never again. Ugh.
