Spirit ruined my vacation.

Spirit Airlines #1128531
So...here is some followup. I filed two complaints - one with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and one with the South Florida Better Business Bureau (the location closest to Spirit's HQ). Amazingly, I got responses from both (likely because they are required to respond to DOT complaints). In both cases, Spirit refused to take any responsibility for the cancellation - blaming it on Air Traffic Decisions (ATC) out of Chicago, where the flight originated. When I asked the DOT representative about this, he explained that as a result of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the FAA is not allowed to cancel flights -- The airlines themselves are responsible for canceling flights. So go figure -- nobody wants to take responsibility for the cancellation. As a result of the BBB complaint, Spirit offered me two $150 future flight coupons. I might use them, but this time I will not get excited about my trip until I have reached my destination. Having been through the ringer in this process, I still agree with Spirit's pricing structure -- paying for what you actually use and charging for the extra stuff -- and letting me decide what I want to pay for and what I don't. While I can never get my vacation back, I am pleased with what Spirit has offered and will resolve the issue here.
