If the delay was due to weather then you are right...you are S.O.L. This rule applies with all airlines so you would be in the same situation with Delta if it happened again. I am not a big fan of US Airways. However, when people book airline tickets for the lowest possible price on an airline with well-known troubles, then they get what they pay for.

If you accept compensation at the time of denial of flight then the airline considers the matter settled. If you try to go back later and demand more compensation then they usually will deny it. BTW-you never mentioned what compensation you received.
As for the "higher status" comment...airlines have long accomodated such travelers and that should be of no surprise. And how do you know that the elite traveler didn't purchase his or her ticket long before you did??

But since it did admit that it had your property (at one point at least) then that is a different story. I think that you would need to file a small claims against them.

I showed them my homeowner's policy that had additional protection for storage. The reason why flights are affordable as they are is because it assumes that you will fly when you book a ticket. When people want to change a flight (one day, one week, one hour does not matter) this causes a ripple effect on the pricing scheme for not only your original flight but many other flights thereafter. In essence, your last minute change creates a change in the supply and demand of your original ticket. And that causes...an increase in the price of a last minute ticket because it now has more value. They charge you more to change accordingly to recognize that effect. And multiply that factor by many times when you are talking about several seats (such as a family) and several hundreds/thousands of dollars. Some airlines have less fees for changes in flights. But that is because their price points are different and losses are made up in other ways (food, beverage, bag fees, etc...).

Were you booked on another flight? If not, what was the reason given. What was the reason for the cancellation in the first place? If you felt unsafe then why did you wait for police? Why not call them yourself? And how exactly was the staff "aggresive?" Were you refunded your ticket? Did you receive any compensation? You had a bad experience, no doubt. But you leave out many important details. You compare your experience with US Airways to Qantas? Really? I won't even comment on that. I am not a fan of US Airways and I will never fly with them. But you can't just bash them and not expand on your experience.

Aside from the liability issue, how about the fact that a lot of time and work went into setting this swing set up in the first place. Imagine if a customer was allowed to buy the display model everytime a new one was put up. People wouldn't have to assemble it themselves. They could just demand the display model and then the store would have to pay a worker to set up a new display model. This is exactly why the display model has been there for over a year. By the way, an "outdoor" display model (such as a swing set or gas grill) is far different then an "indoor" display model (such as a T.V. or DVD player) when you start to factor in the labor cost of assembling.

However, since this doesn't seem like the case I really don't know why you would ask for someone by name. Most (if not all) airlines require a death certificate for bereavement fares. It's not that they think you are lying. It's that SOME people WOULD lie to get a good deal on a flight. And most airlines also do not allow to transfer names on a ticket. Again, this is a policy that prevents SOME people from scamming the system. Solution: If you are a frequent flier of Delta, send them a complaint...they may reimburse you in the form of miles. If not a frequent flier, still send in a complaint and they may issue you a voucher for your troubles.
Your beef may be with Delta but given my experience flying, I bet you would have had this same experience with any carrier.

Solution: pay the fee with a Government Travel Card if you have one or pay out of pocket and claim it on a travel voucher. When finance gets tired of paying for this they will move future business to another carrier that will honor contract argeements with respect to active duty personnel traveling on official business.

Lessons learned: (1) Always pay with a credit card as you have more rights and appeal options. (2) Try to purchase tickets directly with the airline. (3) Avoid cancelling any trips unless you clearly know beforehand what its cost is going to be.
And since most major airlines have the same rules as Delta when it comes to situations such as yours, you will likely suffer the same outcome should this happen again but with another carrier.

Because non-prepared travelers often make fraud claims. Still, it looks like you didn't fair too badly. Next time book directly with the airline. And actually, if you cancel the card it can have a negative effect on your credit history (if you are unhappy with Orchard just pay off the balance but keep the account active...this will help show your credit worthiness later in life and can raise your credit score believe it or not). BTW- Orchard Bank is usually for people trying to repair their credit (they offer many secured credit cards but with higher interest rates and many FEES). If you have a credit score of 706 I am curious as to why you would choose Orchard since there are many more companies that offer better rates and deals. In any event, I realize you are upset but a lawsuit is a bit extreme in your case.

Also, have you tried contacting the bank and informing them of your unhappiness?
