Quality stinks - kitchen slideout and water damage due to leaks

Updated by user May 21, 2020

This trailer is a 2020 Open Range Highland Ridge 2910RL.

Updated by user May 21, 2020

UPDATE: May 22, 2020. We never heard from the manufacturer as of this date.

The RV dealership performed repairs to the best of their ability. Noted was that the kitchen slide was missing a seal from the factory and put on the dealership lot to sell. Unfortunately the dealership noted that the floor damage was contributable to rocks getting under the slide and pointed the finger at us. Strange as the trailer only moved twice from the dealership to our lot where it sat in the same place for maintenance and repairs.

Isn't a trailer supposed to travel on roads and highways? Hmmmmm We again point our finger to the manufacturer as lousy, stinking quality. What are we supposed to do - park the trailer and not take it camping? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of RV'ing?

The dealership now has advised us that any future communication needs to be directly with the manufacturer.

Say what? So again fair warning to stay away from Open Range.

Original review Apr 18, 2020
Steer clear folks! Our NEW 2020 trailer has been at the dealership for 10 weeks for repairs! Kitchen slideout motors were not synchronized and motor malfunctioned on one side. Additionally the rubber seal failed on slideout in closed position and rain water damaged the flooring and deteriorated the end table closest to the slideout. Was told that the flooring can't be matched so they had to cut pieces under the sofa to match and then had to wait for the "special sealant". After several attempts using advice of youtube and RV dealer, we were able to close the slideout for travel for service. This involved opening and closing the slide-out in small increments while a 2nd party pushed inward on one corner of the slideout from outside. The exterior molding pulled away from trailer wall during these recommended steps. Dealership service department has been waiting for a) approval for repairs by manufacturer and b) lead time for parts. Again, this is a 2020 trailer and is under warranty! Why? Interior design is great but quality is in the toilet! At least that works!

Drawer under stove stuck

I am no wondering if I can buy a drawer to replace this one. I might need to break off the cover to get in. The other way is to totally remove the stove & over which may cost over $200. Pulling this drawer by force and replacing it might cost les. Could you help me find out if I can buy a replacement drawer?

WE ARE EXPERIENCING A NIGHTMARE

We bought a 2014 Open Range and we have had nothing but issues. We are now being told its going to cost around $15-$16K to replace the master bedroom slide, skylight, roof membrane, the control level panel and motor for the living room slide. DOES ANYONE HAVE A LAWSUIT AGAINST OPEN RANGE? This is just now 5 years old.

We own a 2015 3x 427 BHS bunkhouse during the end if last year 2018 we discovered the front left side storage door was allowing water to seep into the storage compartment, there is nothing wrong with weather strip on the door. This is a installation defect.

The flooring in the compartment is rotted out, we called their customer service and ask them for some goodwill towards the cost of the repairs, they claimed because its past the 2 year mark they couldn't do anything toward helping us with the manufacturing default, we feel this is extremely poor customer service considering how much these rv's cost. We have had our camper in the shop multiple times for many repairs, the customer service rep claimed we should have caught the leak sooner, we never got into that side of the rv only did this time to clean out and organize when we discovered the flooring was not stable. We also asked for a 3x decal because of fading, no help there either. I understand that all campers have issues and we have dealt with many however when its clearly a manufacturing/installation defect no matter the warranty the company should offer some goodwill towards the repairs.

We sit in the front of a very busy campground and dozens of people have asked us about our camper. You can guess what our response will be....poor warranty, poor customer service.

Don't buy this Light 5th wheel.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Brand new and VERY little use Everything is falling apart. All trim has fallen off walls and around doors. DR table is not attached to floor. Shades do not work...they wad up, furniture is terrible. Recliner does not recline. Range hood fan and light do not work and dealer does not know where fuses are.Cant open medicine cabinet unless you remove hand towel from fixture. Brand new shower head had to be replaced as it is full of shavings of some kind. None of the fittings on pipes were tightened at factory. Leaking water from shower snd fresh water. Had to hire mobil repair 2 times to stop all water leaks. Pipes froze with trailer heated and us in it probably because they were leaking. We had used trailer 1 time. We are disgusted and wish we had never seen this 5th wheel. Extremely poor quality. DO NOT BUY!

2015 OR Journeyer 337 RLS

Just a note..My OR isn't perfect but i seem to have a lot less trouble than many of you.

Mechanically Ive traveled thousands of miles without incident. No leaks.

Plumbing works no leaks.

Fit and finish is good except for whomever put the cabenet handles on i believe was drunk..not one is straight or level.

Walls and fixtures are all well installed and are of good quality. No wiring issues. I just put an AC on, one of 2. $700.

Wood trim mouldings were not secured well ...i bought a Dewalt Brad Nailer and some furnature repair crayons and simply repair ..only takes minutes.

Minor repairs i do my self..its easier than going to a dealer..

I must comment that the furnature is shit..im replacing that now. I paid $41 k on a 60k list.

Previously, 15 years ago I had a New Newmar Kountry Star TT...fit and finish was good... but the Running gear was terrible...payload was 800 lbs.. blowouts and bent axles.

I had to replace both and suspension and tires. 7k axles and goodyear unisteal g159 tires. Brought them to court in Illinois...i was too late.

I did however make them hire a lawyer and make a few court appearances.

I am comfortable in mine..just came back from a very rainy month treck. Personally im grateful that i havent been stuck on the side of the road like with the Newmar.

Good luck to you all

Horrible service bad quality camper

I would never buy a camper from Browns. Once you purchase the RV and service takes over is when the problems begin.

We've had to call for months and finally had to say a few choice words before they repaired most of the items. Now we are going through the same problems again and again no replies. We paid over $60k for this Open Range and would love to just return it and buy something else from another RV Dealer. BTW.

Life time warranty means nothing because they don't want to reply or fix anything. New Open Range 5th Wheel -Heat did not work in the bedroom -Thermostat was not working properly and they said that's common. -Ceiling fan not working properly -Outside storage compartment didn't lock -when we purchased camper the bedroom table was broken. 5 months later nothing -Main door was stuck and could not use.

Had to go through the back door. -Electric water heater never worked Left messages for items that were not fixed. 1 week later no reply at all!!

Never will by an Open Range again or purchase from Browns again!!! We cannot get rid of this camper and Browns fast enough.

A tip: When extending or retracting your cable slide outs always stop when the sound changes, do not wait until you hear the loud clicking/knocking noise as that will damage your gearbox and is why you are getting through gearboxes. I made the same mistake when I fist started using this type of slide out, I damaged two gearbox's until I learned how to use them properly.

On my previous trailers I would wait to hear the loud clicking noise then stop pressing the switch. At least the gearbox is a really easy swap out, it takes me under an hour and you can buy them online for less than $100 shipped.

$150 for the entire motor and gearbox assembly. These cable slide outs are used by lots of manufacturers and are a very good an lightweight option and easier to work on than most other designs as you can do most repairs and service from inside your RV. No clambering underneath and having to remove the under floor.

We bought a 36’ 2011 Open Range 340FLR Jurnyer travel trailer due to it’s unique design. It is called a hybred since it’s configuration is like a 5th wheel inside but is a travel trailer.

You go in the door and to the left is three steps up to the bathroom and bedroom and to the right is the kitchen and living room. It has a hudge pass through basement storage under the bedroom. The kitchen/ living area has the high spacious ceiling like a fifth wheel. That’s the good part.

From there it’s all down hill.

In 2015 the roof at only 4 years old started leaking and we were told that it need to be replaced. Along with the roof needing replacement were delamination of the front and rear end caps and 3 spots on the driver side. The cabinet frame around the mechanical acccess opening fell apart and had to be rebuilt. Water leakage from the roof issues caused interior wall paneling to delaminate.

Those also made the floor spongy in places. The skylight over the shower cracked from stresses due to the coach flexing while traveling, the ketches slid won’t fully extend on one end and two different dealers have been unable to adjust it to open correctly.

Two of the slides on occasion won’t open without a shove and the list goes on. We only wish this unique design would be offered by a quality manufacture.

I have a 2017 open range 319RLS. The first year we took a 7 months trip west of the Mississippi river.

During this time we had a water pump go bad, the rubber strip on the driver side slide come unglued, 2 slide motors go bad, the lights in the canopy quit working, all this happened while we were on the road. Called the manufacture in IN. They told us to go and find a place to get these problems fix and send the them receipts. It is now 2 and half years old and they say it out of warranty and they never got the receipts.

we sent them the receipts 5 times. Stay a way from open range and highland ridge.

I bought the RV from Palm RV in Fort Myers Fl. they are as bad as Highland Ridge, they promise you everything undre the sun until they get your money

Junk slides on the Open Range 319 RLS

I agree totally with the gentleman in reference to the slides being junk. I have a 201* 319 RLS and I have had to replace 3 motors and 1 gear box. We were stranded for 2 weeks with 1 because the motor failed when the slice was out. I also agree the layout and the entire interior is great. I bought my RV second hand. This is my first RV and I would highly recommend an extended warranty. The person I purchased from transferred the remainder of a 7 year warranty and it has been a tremendous savings. I am not big on extended warranties but it appears with RVs it will surely save money. The one I have only requires a $50 co-pay and the remainder was covered.

2018 OPEN RANGE 3X, GARBAGE.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I too made the mistake of purchasing a $94K, 2018 Open Range 3X, fifth wheel that is a complete piece of *** So much for luxury and quality. Initially, I had 48 items that needed repair and they weren’t all cosmetic, most were major and/or safety related. So far in seven months, it’s been in the shop over 100 days, Highland Ridge can’t even send the right parts and when they do, most of the time they are damaged, and that’s after waiting weeks for them. Two months after delivery, I now have an area on the drivers side that’s delaminating, in addition to a soft floor. Did I mention another list, that’s at 25 items and growing almost daily. Complete run around from the factory, and oh how they lie, tell you they are going to take care of it one day and the next, you’re told they never said that. This is my seventh rv purchase and I’ve NEVER experienced problems like I have with Highland Ridge. I should have known better. My advice, run as fast as you can away from a Highland Ridge product! NEVER AGAIN!!!

Did you ever get your issues resolved? We currently own a 2017 3X 427bhs and have a list of issues ourselves including 3 slides that were cut too big, soft floor, lights not working, broken roof trusses, inverter for fridge not working, kinked hoses, propane regulator not working, etc...

I have same issue and local dealer will not return my email request. Sounds like a class action suit.

Searaybayliner@***.com. Called factory and they referred me back to local dealer in North Carolina, Franklinville.

We like the camper and live in full time. Would like to see factory or dealer step up and do the right thing
