People need to know

A family member was admitted through the ED with pain and sudden onset inability to walk. Four days later and no answers.

CT scan, lumbar puncture, labs, no answers. Prepping for the lumbar puncture she was told she would have to get herself off the gurney and on to the table on her hands and knees. She (78 years old, gout and arthritis pain in nearly every joint) said she couldn't do that with her painful knees and hands. Staff said, oh we'll help you and proceeded to tip the bed causing her to fall out, landing on her hands and knees.

Physical therapy comes to her room to get her out of bed and into a chair but no actual therapy happens. She is almost unable to walk without help upon arrival and yet no attempt to assist her in getting some movement back over four days. Don't even get me started on the wick system where they expect grown people to just wet themselves wherever they are instead of assisting them with getting into a restroom.

I found the staff lazy. I found the level of care to be nonexistent and I would like to k ow what happened to the patients bill of rights.

Nonexistent pain management after surgery

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

NDH

I had serious neck surgery at NDH in October 2022. Check in, prep, surgery and recovery were all fine.

Unfortunately I was scheduled to stay overnight.

When I was taken to my room after surgery recovery, I was still under the effects of the painkillers given in recovery. Couple of hours later I was going to sleep when a nurse came in to give me my meds. Whatever she gave me did not address the increasing pain I was in, and I was now wide awake. I think it may have been a caffeine pill.

So an hour later I called for pain medication, explaining that I was really in a lot of pain. The nurse that came told me I couldnt have another of those pills until 10PM (still a few hours away). I explained to her (again) that the first pill did not work and I was really in alot of pain. She told me the only thing she could give me was Gabapentin and tylenol.

I told her that would not work, tylenol has never done anything for me, my entire 61 year life. Oh well! That's all I could have!

Needless to say, 12 hours after a Discectomy Anterior Cervical w fusion, and now having no effective pain medication in my system, I was in agony. I could not lay in bed any more, so I tried to get out to a chair and ended up falling to the floor.

I dont know how long I was on the floor, but strangely I started getting electrical shocks which snapped me out of it, and I did make it up into a chair where I hoped to stay as still as possible, not moving my head or neck until I could get out of this place.

Low and behold, about six hours after she gave me tylenol, my nurse was back (at 1AM) to check on me. Outside the door, listening to our conversation, was an older nurse who I figured was her supervisor. My nurse feigned SHOCK that I was in pain! I reminded her that I told her tylenol would not work.NOW she says Oh but we have plenty of other options.

Not what she told me six hours ago. Finally after trying to explain the other options (I had no faith in her medical abilities) she grew frustrated, threw the meds she had brought in with her in the garbage and left the room. About 2am the supervisor came in. I guess its normal for them to see someone in a chair holding their head at 2am at NDH.

Interestingly, she told me I could have been given the same meds I had in recovery all along, which the tylenol nurse specifically told me I could not have. Maybe they mixed up my meds with someone else?

So I didnt sleep since I left recovery, and didnt take anymore of their meds because obviously they didnt know what they were doing. A few people from the new shift the next morning asked me How you doing? And I told them.

They all had the same response - Oh well, were short staffed, so it effects everyone. Great. I get no pain relief because they are short staffed (and the same could happen to you). I wouldnt go back to this hospital with a stubbed toe.

They obviously put more money into landscaping than medical training.

If youre ok without pain medication after surgery, by all means go to NDH. If youre ok that no one will be checking on you or your IVs etc all night, by all means, go to NDH. If you fall down and its ok that no ones coming to check on you, by all means go to NDH!

There is a definite undercurrent of dissatisfaction on the staff. They are only there to put in their time; caring for you is a bother.

Of course my doctor has some responsibility here too.

Apparently once you are off his surgery assembly line, hes not caring for you anymore. As soon as I can talk and walk straight, Im going to try and find a different one.

Terrible Service

Original review Aug 31, 2022

This was the absolute worst experience in an Emergency room I have ever had. I came to the ED for left flank pain, dizziness, and low heart rate.

I was given a chest x-ray and a diagnosis of "Atypical chest pain". I did not report chest pain. The nurse Carol B was rude, has no bed side manner, and also tried to give us false information regarding post covid syndrome. Carol B told me "post covid will only last a year" and when I told her that I was already 19 months in and reminded her that millions of people are still suffering since 2020 she got an attitude and started to slam things around.

I informed her that I was a hard stick and it was difficult to draw blood from me she got an attitude and said "that's not what I want to hear when I have a million things to do". She also questioned me about why I kept talking about being post covid. Although she did get an iv access in me, Carol B could not draw blood from me and then questioned me about why I have been "stuck" so many times and have so much scar tissue if I "only" had post covid. After I explained to her that I have been stuck because I have had many tests to try to explain the array of symptoms I live with every day for the past 19 months and there is not much data to support the illness, she finally shut up and called for another nurse do the blood draw whom I had no problems with.

Dr.

Daniel Miller, however funny and nice was obviously overworked and did not completely listen to my symptoms. I never reported chest pain and told him my left side. low heart rate and dizziness were the presenting problems. The clinical notes Dr.

Miller reported were not accurate at all and he reported that I left with no symptoms when in fact I left with the same symptoms I arrived with.

I will be reporting this experience to the hospital board and the NYS department of health as well. Even if I was dying I would never return to this Emergency Department.

Poor Service at the laboratory

I was a walk-in fasting client with no appointment at 8:50 AM this morning

There were no people sitting in the waiting room nor in the back getting blood taken

Told receptionist that I was fasting and I was informed that Since I did not have an appointment I would have to wait and she could not tell me how long the wait would be.

Lack of sensitivity and professionalism from social worker

Leading up to my third day at Northern Duchess Hospital I had been treated with such kindness and respect by all of the staff. On the third day that shifted.

A Case worker/social worker named Hadas was assigned to my case and paid me a visit. Everything felt like it was going well at first so I felt comfortable offering the suggestion of possibly entering an inpatient rehab facility due to my continued condition. My family is not in a position to care for me full time and I understand the the application process may take some time. Hadas took off out of the gates saying that I should leave for rehab as soon as I was discharged.

I admit this took me back a moment as I did not have my affairs in order for such an immediate move. This is absolutely what I was asking for, however, she had no sense of why this might be sooner than anticipated and something that I would really like to be more prepared for. I like having a plan and this just felt very rushed and impersonal. I asked for more time to think on it and Hadas so eloquently explained to me that I was extremely rude.

My father was present and proposed that this shouldn't be such an unreasonable request. I whole heartedly asked her, " What would you do?" Hadas returned with "Don't be rude to me." Hadas decided that she would leave without a goodbye and left me with no hope in terms of a reasonable discussion or outcome. She informed me that Laura (Another worker who she would be switching over to my case) would come see me the next day.

Her bedside manner leaves much to be desired and her career goals should probably be reassessed. She is in no way a professional who desires to advocate for those in need.

Hopefully her sudden departure was instigated by The Immigration And Naturalization Service and " Hadas" got shipped back to whatever nasty nation she escaped. I'm sure you'll have much better luck with "Laura".

I know Hadas. How dare you make a false insinuation regarding her ethnic background.

And, Hadas is a wonderful, compassionate person.

The writer of this review is making it sound like she, the patient, was so sweet and wonderful. This was not the case.

Were you present for this conversation Brenda B? I’m confused about how you might have a first hand experience here.

Unprofessional and unkind behaviors.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

My daughter was sent by her pediatrician today to the ER for IV treatment for peritonsillar Abscess. She is 19 and had driver herself.

I arrived about 1.5 hours later and was happy to see that she was on IV antibiotic and steroid. She informed me that staff had been great and very nice to her. She told me she had asked for some pain medication.

A new nurse arrived in with oral meds and my daughter said she was unable to swallow the pill. Nurse was rude and asked "so you requested pain meds and now what".

I explained she was unable to swallow (thats why we were there). I asked could she have something through IV. She huffed off and arrived back with something to give through IV. I then asked what was the plan for my daughter and she told me she knew nothing about her and would send in provider.

Provider arrived shortly and was very rude.

Told me she had spoken to my daughter and used lots of hand gestures to ask why we were not communicating with each other. I explained that I just wanted to hear what doctor had to say as teenagers do miss some important information. It was terrible. She then told me that nurse had informed her that I was upset with treatment and had questions.

She asked had I any other questions after very rudely telling me what was happening with my daughter. I said yes and asked why she was being so rude, I felt I had the right to ask questions about my child. She did say sorry but there was my daughter trying to defend me asking about medical information. This was very unprofessional behavior from both the provider and the nurse.

I had no complaints about treatment I was very happy they had taken care of her so quickly.

Our visit to the ER will likely cost us about 1300 out of pocket and I don't think I was being unreasonable by asking to speak to doctor. This was very upsetting to both my daughter and I and I will not be seeking their services again.

Northern Dutchess Hospital - Customer Care Review

Unprofessional!!! Radiology department must be fun if you can sit in the break room for hours on end and ignore your patients...They screwed up appointment time ...then proceeded to argue and get nasty....And because break room is right across from reception window....Where they are supposed to be working....I could hear their giggling and cursing while they were talking about memes on Facebook etc...I have been in healthcare going on 18 years and their conduct was highly unprofessional..They exhibited poor customer service and as far as I am concerned misrepresented the company and its philosophy!

Dad, sorry I took you to this hospital!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

We put the word out - and none of my family will never return to this hospital - ever!!! My father died there -- sorry we took you there Dad.

The ICU nurses lied to the doctor and gave my father medications he was not allowed to have (documented allergic reaction). Then they lied to me, and when I tried to get to the bottom of it - they kicked me out and threatened to have me arrested. Then we went to the patient advocate, and she ran us round in circles over and over again, but only lied a few times to us. (Patient Advocate is mislabeled - it's really the HOSPITAL ADVOCATE).

One lies, and the others swear to it. Gotta love when they close ranks. Good luck getting a truthful story out of ICU nurses (or the Hospital Advocate) if your loved one dies. Oh yea, when one of the doctors was in the ICU the day my father arrived, he looked at me with that classic arrogant doctor expression and said to me...

why did you bring him back here, I already told you not to.... That should have been my clue to go where there are real doctors and real ICU nurses, not the Northern Dutchess dump.

Norther Dutchess Hospital - ER doctor from ***!

We had a similar ER experience there in Dec 2014. The doctor was an arrogant ***.

He barely touched or examined, did not listen, supposedly the nurses did not tell him relevant medical history or what medication were taken (he blamed the nurses several times), he would not let us finish our questions, he tried to belittle us by dismissing most of what I said as not relevant, he was making all sorts of facial expressions as if our questions were *** and our story was made up and ridiculous, was not even going to do testing until I pressed with many questions (then he listened and blamed the nurses again but was noticeably angered), and he kept walking away after his glorious summary statements (that completely missed the boat) so I followed him to finish my questions. He was not happy with me either, I was clearly wasting his time. From there we were dismissed and sent home with the most ridiculous advice and inappropriate medication (which in turn required another hospital ER visit a few weeks later, but this time more serious). I felt as if we were immediately labeled as a GOMER (=Get Out Of My ER).

We were taking up his valuable space and time, how dare we.

The *** doctor was tall, blond-ish hair, pale complexion, goofy fake smile, glasses, very aloof and not an ounce of compassion or interest (possibly hard of hearing and visually impaired). I will be filing a formal complaint very soon.

Travel the extra distance and go somewhere else other than Northern Dutchess Hospital where doctors truly demonstrate compassion!!

As a cancer patient, I have been battling with repeated infections and Lymphedema for several months. Within an 8 week period I was admitted twice to Northern Dutchess Hospital.

The first admission resulted in a hospitalist and specialist collaborating on my care with both listening to me as well as involving me in the decisions. However, upon my second admission, the admitting doctor was condescending insisting from the beginning I had never been there because they found no records of any previous visits or admissions. I began the long tedious tale of my medical history including the reason for my visit to the ER which was a reoccurrence of Cellulitis. Upon explaining I also have issues with Lymphedema, I was immediately silenced with his verbal disbelief and denial of Lymphedema.

This was despite my indication of how I had been treating with a specialist for this since February 2014 and records would confirm my statement. He was curt, arrogant and stated he should just send me home with antibiotics despite the excruciating pain I was experiencing. During my stay he continuously disagreed with my specialist who had been treating me for cellulitis over the past three months. He repeatedly cut me off when he would stop by to see how I was doing, completely dismissing my explanation of how I was feeling.

His exams were a joke as he would quickly peak at one corner of the area or not at all and comment that it looked fine. When he requested records from my primary care physician who is not treating me for this condition, rather than my oncologists and infection disease doctor, it confirmed he was not listening to me. If he was he would've requested records from the physicians treating me for this condition to be better prepared to treat me. Needless to say and to make an already long story short, I would refuse to be treated by him or preferably travel the extra distance and go somewhere else in the future.

To summarize, as I've started to tell my tale to numerous individuals who work at the hospital, they immediately know this physician by name before I can provide it and all say he is more concerned with being "God" in the medical field than actually listening or caring for his patients.

Further comments are that he is arrogant and detached from any opinion that doesn't coordinate with his own. Don't waste your time.....NDH is more concerned with its appearance than the care it provides it's patients!
