National American Miss in San Diego, California - NAM combining pageants to save money. Over 130 girls in a category.

I used to love NAM, thought it was really a great pageant for girls to enter but I think I have changed my mind. They are combining the Northern California Pageant with the Southern California pageant to save money. Now there are over 130 girls in one category alone. Competing against 130 is ridiculous. We paid about $500 entry fees- $300 optionals plus all the extras you have to pay for DVD's,roses, hotel rooms, etc and now they've dumped all of California into one pageant. HORRIBLE! Same thing for Texas- they totally got rid of the central Texas pageant and are loading up Northern and Southern Texas pageants. Squeezing more girls in for less overhead. Shame on them!!! We have put up with competing against 100 girls but now it's just ridiculous. Obviously not because of low census as 130 girls proves there was no low census. I thought NAM was different and about the girls but now have been proven wrong. It's about the money.

Yes, we completely agree. In 2015 NAM just wants to scam little girls out of $600.

Instead of reviewing criticism and making improvements, they are having to consolidate the pageants because of steadily losing contestants that are going to reputable pageants that cost little to nothing. Isn't social media swell!

At least your pageant is within the same state. They combined Nevada and Utah.

That is very disappointing when you don't have a state rep.

What a joke. This was our 4th year and we won't be back.

I love NAM too but I agree... it would be nice if they'd at least split the age groups into 2 divisions (2 queens per age group) if they're going to be combining North and South pageants.

National American Miss in Farmington Hills, Michigan - Lack of diversity unfair judges

1.8
Details
The Michigan pageant over 4july weekend was awful. They had the girls competitions back to back and they barely had a break in between to grab something to eat. As much money as you spend in fees etc. one would think they would at least offer some complimentary snacks for them. They just had water. Wow! I'm surprised no one passed out from low blood sugar after all the running and dancing they did. In the talent competition the young lady who was picked as one of the runners up, totally sang her entire song off key. I think maybe the judges were tone deaf as well! And every single 10 finalists were Caucasian young ladies with the exception of one African American girl who was eventually eliminated!

National American Miss - Review in Ceremonies and Events category from Hearne, Texas

National Ametican Miss is a WONDERFUL organization that lives up to everything they promise! My daughter participated this year in her very first pageant EVER and had a blast! She did not have the traditional expensive suit or crazy expensive gown, and won 1st runner up! She won 1st in talent & most photogenic. I was beyond impressed with the staff and how much they loved on ALL the girls. It was an unforgettable experience and we are excited to return next year!

This was no doubt posted by someone at NAM. There is no talent show for 2015 and the staff does nothing for the girls. The staff doesn't even wear name tags to identify themselves.

National American Miss in Germantown, Maryland - Beware....no refunds given for any reason!

My daughter broke her leg and wasn't up to competing, and this was going to be her last year. It just doesn't seem as fun as it used to be, there were no classes or seminars put on this year to help them prepare for the pageant and decided it would be her last year. After breaking her leg and ending up in crutches didn't feel like doing the pageant and NAM refuses to refund our money. We personally paid her entire sponsor fee and they won't refund any of it. They will only hold it for a future pageant, which she won't be doing, she feels she has grown out of them, and like I said, she's no longer having any fun with them. So that money is all being kept by the pageant people!! Don't waste your money with this pageant, put your daughter in a better one! One that's FUN!!!

You won't imagine how much "silent income" this pageant reaps from unsuspecting girls who don't participate after paying their first sponsorship installment (or more), but who end up not participating. It's an eye-opener to say the least.

we are in a similar situation--they gave us the option to postpone the $$ for next year OR transfer it to another family. the problem is we don't know of another family that is interested in doing this next year, but if you do, you can have them transfer it and that family pay you the money and hopefully it will all work out.

instead, we are unenthuastically going to attend. she will squeeze in to the same dress as last year and we are looking to friends to borrow something of an interview outfit as she grew and we do not have anything in our closet here. besides the entry fee that we paid in December and the $40 I must pay for the socks and t-shirt, I don't want to put any more money in to this event.

since we missed all the deadlines and the prep session already, she will definitely not get as much out of it this year as she did last year. good luck to you.

No it's sad that you are just mad that your daughter didn't win. Nam puts 0 pressure on you to do any optionals.

That is for fun only, and does not effect the overall pageant score.

They truly love on all the girls and even though my daughter did not win, she had a blast & made a lot of friends. Oh, but she did get 1st runner up and had NO pageant experience at all!

First lets start with the judging at the Michigan pageant, yes NAM Michigan lacks in that area. But for you to sit here and bash and bully a 14 year old girl who worked very hard to win this pageant SHAME ON YOU.

Lets state the facts you didn’t state.First off did she know a judge yes she has been in Michigan pageants since she was 4 years old, but her parents I know for a fact went to the directors and did not want that judge to judge their daughter because of a conflict they had with one another. Look at her scores from the other judges they felt she was the best qualified to represent Michigan she made the top 15 at nationals. And lets put this out there she has competed with National American Miss in Michigan every year since she was 6. HELLO that should tell you she knows the system.

She rcompetes and get better every year. I know this girl and I am sick of people bashing her she was the clear winner on that stage you can not deny it and she is the type of girl who would give you a dress and compete against her just the type of girl she is. And lets get back to Nationals top 15 overall is pretty good l, 11th place overall in 2013 all american is pretty good don’t you think. Lets not forget TOP 5 the very next year at Teen Usa in Michigan her very first year.

So tell me where did she cheat. If you argue the judging yes they should get judges that have no connection to the girls get them from another state but to say the girl cheat is ridiculous knowing her success in various other pageants. As a parent you should not be bashing this teenager what is it your daughter lost to her is that why your doing this.

This is not my child my child competed against this girl and I said she has it naturally and was in agreeance with the outcome the best girl won get over it. And who did they bash previously yhat makes no sense the only time they went to the directors is when their daughters scores were to be thrown out I was infront of them when she talked to Lew and Joy and stated she absolutely did not want the one judge to judge their daughter

Hi! i previously wrote a review at the link attached at the end, however I'm am 18 so maybe my input would help from a contestant and adult like perspective.

This is now my 3rd year competing my very first year i came in the top ten out of i believe 80 something girls in New York South as a teen my mom is a single mom of 5 kids and we took a risk the first year but after seeing the open call we thought, why not? after the second year we thought i did so well my first try it was worth the money for an amazing experience! (i also won the photogenic optional contest so we got $250 back)

the second year (heres why i think i have a very fair input as far as people saying "if they didn't think it was a scam they didn't pay for it") I was 17 my second year and actually paid for the pageant myself, just to be clear the sponsorship fee is 480, optional contest are 75 to enter ($250 prize so if you think you have a good chance do it because you profit! that back) the productive outfit is 40 (yes you are required to purchase this you need it through out the weekend it consist of a purple tee shirt and jewelry which u pair with YOUR OWN denim shorts and white sneakers) and there may be a $20 registration fee for you (i don't remember because as a returning girl you get a discount so i actually only paid 360 for my sponsorship fee this year) these are the only things you are REQUIRED to purchase there are other things u have the option to buy like roses for on stage but you don't need them (personally i got them my first year but didn't get them after that their not something you abs need)

i think it is also important to add i live 15 mins from the pageant location so do not pay for a hotel so i can't comment on that, also food isn't free so bring your own or be prepared to pay!

of course the hotel that is hosting needs to profit from this too! finally the dress, i actually bought a $25 dress on eBay and it actually looks amazing (i couldn't believe it either) a new and expensive dress is not needed or required every year! you see girls in designer dress who don't even make the top 20! (like me my first year)

yes it will add up but it is on the cheaper side of pageants and has the largest prize packages.

coming from a single mom of 5 and NYPD officer and an 18 year old who is now going on her 2nd year of spending her OWN money on NAM, it is well worth it and if your daughter does well enough, even if she doesn't win try maybe once of twice more i got in the top ten my first year and SECOND runner up my second year (with a $25 dress again) even if you don't win i promise your daughter will walk out of there with friends, more confident and outgoing and with more professional speaking skills! I no longer hide in the back when it comes to class presentations i ask to go first! I 100% owe that to NAM.

i haven't won and this is my final year before i age out of teen and i don't regret a minute or penny of it! neither does my mom (which was surprising)

I hope you decide to participate and enjoy your experience, best of luck!

My daughter had a horrible time at the NAM pageant in 2013. Everything was last minute and it was just thrown together. She made it to Top 15 or 10 I don't remember which one they did. Parents/Guardians aren't allowed to go in the dressing room to help the girls get dressed. They had about three women in the room helping the girls get dressed in a small amount of time. My daughter said they gave them about seven minutes each to get dressed. The dressing room for the interviews with the judges was okay, because there was one lady that helped my daughter right away after they told all of the parents to get out. The dressing rooms weren't even really nice. They just had this huge room with about three room dividers just anywhere. I do not recommend going to this pageant.

At the regional pageant in charlotte, 2015, the changing room consisted of one giant open conference room. No mirrors, no plugs. My daughter was horrified and very disappointed
