Verified Reviewer | Detroit, MichiganDisappointed Craftsmanship
On June 9, 2023, at 187,462.9 miles on a 2010 Ford Explorer, I hired Michigan Motor Exchange to perform a complete rebuild of the 4.0L V6 (OEM). Now, it's July 31, 2024, and the same vehicle has 217,282.7 miles on it - with approximately 30,000 miles on the rebuilt engine. I hesitated writing this review, but after some thought, writing a summary of the experience and lessons might help make a more informed decision:
Customer service - Good
Cost for the service - Fair
Craftsmanship - Very Poor
CONTEXT:
The customer service was very good. I could make a phone call and get an actual human being to talk with, get a quote, and explain the process. When issues arose, they talked and worked with me.
When I agreed to the nearly $6,000 price for the rebuild, I felt the cost for the service was fair within the industry. I work regularly with industrial mechanics, and I understand the cost of labor and time to do a job properly. I also appreciated that they added in a 'buffer' cost of additional parts if they were needed, which most of were reimbursed. This showed good planning methodology in my opinion.
Unfortunately, the craftsmanship of the job was very poor, and rework was needed - to a point that I'm going to another mechanic and paying for what would otherwise be warranty work from this rebuild job. Here are a couple of examples:
1. On June 13, 2022 (4 days after the rebuild was completed), the engine was failing due to a loss of coolant. I returned to Michigan Motor Exchange, where they identified the radiator as the fault that needed to be replaced. At an agreed cost of $560, I hired them to perform the work. However, I was very disappointed that they 'missed' this when the vehicle was in their possession for the rebuild.
2. On December 15, 2022 (6 months after the rebuild was finished), I took the vehicle back to have the upper oil pan seal fixed. It was leaking from a poorly installed seal during the rebuild. On October 19, 2023, my regular mechanic observed the upper oil pan was leaking again, and Michigan Motor Exchange's 'fix' was not properly performed - they should have dropped the pan and installed the seal properly. Instead, they added some external substance to stop it from dripping. The pan drips/leaks as of today.
3. On December 21, 2022 (6 days after I took it to them for warranty work on the oil pan) the coolant bypass hose burst, and the engine lost its coolant. After much expressed frustration, Michigan Motor Exchange paid for a tow truck to haul it back to their shop (again, good customer service). During the rebuild, they reinstalled the previous bypass hose, not observing that it was worn and needing replacement - even though it would have easily been paid for with the 'buffer' funds they reimbursed. The fix included a scrap piece of hose cut to length and hose clamped in place. The repair failed again on January 20, 2023, and this time I brought it to my regular mechanic. They identified several issues that included a faulty and improper bypass hose, leaks from the radiator, and leaks from coolant lines from the radiator. I hired my mechanic to install a new radiator, new lines, new cap, new bypass hose to spec - which should have been done under warranty from Michigan Motor Exchange, but alas, I simply did not trust their craftsmanship. After the installation was complete, I took the faulty radiator to Michigan Motor Exchange and explained the issue. I didn't demand a refund because they didn't do the rework, however, I asked them to take the high road and see to it the proper training occurs with their mechanic and if they felt good by it, reimburse me where they felt appropriate. To be clear, I wasn't expecting to be reimbursed.
Reflecting on this experience at the 30,000-mile mark, this was a bad decision to have it rebuilt by Michigan Motor Exchange. While the price was fair, and customer services were good, the poor craftsmanship and rework made the project very expensive and difficult to do. If I were to do it over, I might get a scrapped engine and swap it out with a trusted mechanic.
- Customer service and conversation
- Poor craftsmanship
Preferred solution: My goal is to help others seriously consider their decision, in the most informed way possible - all pros/cons laid out as clear as possible.
User's recommendation: Consider an engine swap with a trusted mechanic - not a rebuild
Had A 6.0 chevrolet motor with wrong heads given to me
I called and gave Mark my vin# and he gave me A motor for my truck 2500 Chevrolet . The motor was picked up and installed to find out Mark made A mistake. The intake original intake did not fit the motor I was given.the mechanic called to inform me the heads were the wrong heads for the motor.I sent pictures and Mark and Kevin agreed wrong heads .The problem is Mark and Kevin the owners were not going to cover the 470.00 that I had to pay the mechanic to install the heads on the reconditioned motor I purchased from Michigan Motor Exchange.

My start to the this year was horrible, I thought it was a bad lifter, I took it to MME, they found several other things, my engine was scrap. Fortunately, Dave took the time and effort to see to it I would be able to get back on the road ASAP, they were able to address the issues and changed out the block and explained thoroughly what caused the fail in the engine and what they we're going to do, I am proud of their work and professionalism that got me back on the road!!
Very grateful for Michigan Motor Exchange!! Thanks, "A Satisfied Customer"!
1996 Camaro 3.8L
Nothing to resolve. I was happy from the start.
We recently purchased a 96 Camaro for our middle son. There was evidence of oil in the coolant so we went shopping for a replacement motor.
Of the four companies we looked at, MME had the fewest complaints we could find so we took a chance. So far, it's worked out really well. The engine has been running like a champ.
We are still breaking it in so who knows what the future brings but I am very happy with their product and service thus far. They've been easy to communicate with, have adapted well to changes, and done the work agreed on for the price agreed on.

2005 ford expedition
Im totally dis- appointed with mme, the replacement of the motor cost me a total of 8,000.00 . plus 6k to rebuild the motor, the when i returned they said the warped intake wasen't covered, so now a trip to the dealer, then six months later the timing sensor was a problem, that was another2k. You live n you learn
Engine replacement
After a couple of camping trips, hauling my travel trailer, the engine on my 2003 GMC Yukon Denali XL 6.0 started knocking really bad. Took it to MME and they determined it was the main bearing.
Since the engine had high mileage already, I decided (MME recommendation also) to purchase a remanufactured engine. The job was done in less than a week. This was 5-6 years ago, and I have not been back to their shop since! I have had zero problems with the engine.
Just did a major tune-up on it, and it runs as smooth as it did when I got it from them.
When my transmission is ready to be replaced, MME will be handling it too! I highly recommend MME.

Resolved: Michigan Motor Exchange Rebuild Engine Review from Mishawaka, Indiana
The other owner Chris reached out to me and resolved the issue of my break line and the transmission. Chris was apologetic and made sure i had everything needed to address the issues.
At this point my vehicle is back up and going and I'm satisfied with the motor work that was done to my vehicle..
Chris ensured me that if any other problems exist, they would be happy to take care of the issues immediately. Thank you MME for putting me back on the road.
Run for your lives people. This place is an absolute JOKE.
I was quoted $3100 on a new motor which then turned into $4700, and still didn't have a running car after 4 weeks. I drove a block from the shop when my car wouldn't accelerate and locked up on me. Drove it back to the shop where the OWNER was completely rude and disrespectful, and tried to disregard me and said that my car was "fine" to drive home. After several times of telling him it DID NOT ACCELERATE he torque braked my car in the lot and blew my brake line out.
What does he say? "Not my problem!" He then took it for a test drive and realized that my car was in fact not driveable and says they'll "get around to it Monday". Well, they didn't call until Tuesday only to say that it is now a transmission problem, something that was perfectly fine before it entered their shop.... and again what is their response to that?
"Not my problem!" So, had to pick it up(on the side of 8 mile left unlocked) with a TRAILER because after almost 5 grand they broke more than they fixed. I have never dealt with such atrocious people in my life.
They have no customer skills what so ever, and clearly have no brains either. I don't understand how they are even in business.
Defective Engine
It was slightly more than two years ago when I paid MME $4,500 and waited more than five weeks to have an engine rebuilt. My problems surfaced after only 38 miles and I have had an uphill battle ever since.
MME had my vehicle a total of three times and I was delivered a defective product each time. Oil in the coolant is difficult to miss, especially in the case of ‘engine experts’ but after three visits, I was told in front of a witness that there was nothing wrong with my engine. I was told that it ran fine. I was told that the oil was rust.
I was told that nothing more could be done. My faith and trust in this establishment had evaporated after that third visit. After the State of Michigan and the BBB became involved eight months later, I was offered a partial refund under the conditions that I would not tell my story online and also sign a hold harmless agreement. I refused and opted for a full refund, which at this point in time only covered my loss with MME.
Many more dollars were lost with incidental expenses directly related to the defective engine. You will read the MME rebuttal to my online complaints and it is suggested that they begged me to make things right. They had my vehicle three times and nothing was made right. You will read about how fixable my engine has become in this rebuttal.
They had my vehicle three times and nothing was fixed! You will read about the age and their idea of book value on my vehicle, which is totally irrelevant. You will read that I am a slanderer and a blackmailer for exercising my right to post an honest complaint and have a demand for a full refund. Michigan Motor Exchange was paid a handsome sum of money to provide a working engine, not an appraisal of the value of my vehicle.
They failed miserably in their guarantee to provide a working product. They failed miserably in the customer satisfaction department as well. If I had only one word to describe MME, it would not be printable in this public forum. I do not have anything good to say about the way they handled my case and I would never recommend their services.
The defective engine has not only caused me a great deal of hardship but affects my family as well.

An honest job
My experience with Michigan Motor Exchange was quite contrary to their advertising and their boasts of excellent service, customer satisfaction and an honest job for an honest wage. They were paid a handsome sum and provided me with a defective engine.
Two additional visits provided me with numerous excuses, plenty of blame and garbage for an engine. I was told they could do no more and that nothing was wrong with my engine. If you read the Michigan Motor Exchange rebuttal to another complaint, entitled WE ARE GOOD PEOPLE, the author of the complaint is chided for many things including wanting to inflict pain on the company, employees and their families. I do not know exactly what happened to bring on this response but I found that Michigan Motor Exchange had a complete disregard for the pain and suffering the defective workmanship has caused for me and my family.
They sure do not seem to practice what they preach. I have wanted a full refund for this mess for quite some time. They seem to think that making more promises and guarantees is a good faith gesture and they want my vehicle for a fourth time. The owners of this company who constantly boast about their work being done to the highest industry standards…and that customer satisfaction is a high priority…sure did not get it right in the three times they had my vehicle.
I did not get an honest job for an honest wage. They did not do unto others. This incident has cost me many more thousands of dollars in incidental expenses. My engine has been contaminated for more than a year now.
I have lost a complete year and everything that could have been accomplished in that year, had my engine been built to the standards they boast. What exactly is it that they want to FIX? What guarantee do I have for an engine that has been in this condition for quite some time? Michigan Motor Exchange has had three chances and has given me garbage that could not possibly have been missed or overlooked through bad communication…or any other excuse.
I am insulted by repeated offers to do the right thing when my trust in this company went out the window many, many months ago. To clean up an old adage Don’t pi$$ down my back and tell me it is raining!
Do the right thing…be good people…do unto others…live by that golden rule…and send me a full refund!
TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
How can Michigan Motor Exchange claim that their work is done to the highest industry standards, that they have master mechanics doing professional work and claim that customer satisfaction is their number one priority...when they provided me with a defective engine? [cross contamination oil/coolant] How can these professionals miss bulletins on my engine?
How can they claim that the oil in the coolant is rust? Family, friends, neighbors, pro mechanics and the State of Michigan all recognized oil in the coolant and the defective workmanship. Michigan Motor Exchange had my truck three times and it was contaminated after each visit. After the third visit, they said that the engine ran fine and sounded fine and attributed the poor performance on everything but themselves.
What do you want from a 2.8L engine? Would you want these people to further service your vehicle? I wanted a full refund of $4.500 for quite some time now. One of the owners recently contacted me with an offer to fix an engine that has been contaminated for more than a year now.
What would be fixable? They want a fourth chance and he tells me of oversights and bad communication. Really? How can you miss cross contamination when all these pros are doing all of this high quality work?
How can you deliver an engine with the coolant reservoir empty and tell the customer that it will not hold ANY LIQUID? It was full of oil/coolant sludge when I got it home. Is this customer satisfaction of the highest priority? I have suffered hardships and misery with this defective product and I guess the "good people" at Michigan Motor Exchange don't think this deserves a full refund.
I was quoted a price that went up considerably. I was told that parts were good and the engine was running and sounded great. Then I was told that these parts were not good and it would cost more money. Ooops!
I was given a timeline and it ended up with 5 1/2 weeks. I am over $9,000 in debt now because of this mess and I want a full refund for the defective work that you provided...and provided...and provided. I would not recommend them for engine repair. If it happened to me...you might be next.
Do some checking before you spend big money. Don't get blinded by the five star reviews, some of which seem to be written by staff and/or owners.
That A+ rating with the BBB does not guarantee services you might receive. Check with the State of Michigan...and good luck if you make them your choice.
DEFECTIVE ENGINE/TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
After 5 1/2 weeks and $4.500.00 MICHIGAN MOTOR EXCHANGE provided me with 10W-30 coolant and various problems. After having my vehicle for the third time, they said the oil was rust and that my engine sounded and ran fine.
Noise? What noise? Hesitation? What do you expect from a 2.8L?
This is warranty repair? This is their idea of customer satisfaction? [Their number one goal] After being completely ignored for many many weeks, my first offers came after contact by the BBB and with the State of Michigan standing at their desk...eight months later. I would not recommend their services.
A partial refund was being offered with the provision that I sign a HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT, which included not telling this story. Their terms or no terms. Money for silence but not a dime for the defective product and the eight months + of inconvenience this has caused for me and my family. Is that customer satisfaction?
I only have the one vehicle and have been trapped in the neighborhood for the most part. With car rental fees and all, this has cost me in excess of $8,000.00 and counting...with the oil and coolant I have to replenish on a regular basis.
Having my engine rebuilt by MME has changed my life...for the worse!
Worst Service Ever!
I do have to add, after much back and forth... We have settled this dispute and I have had no additional issues with the engine, or company.
Worst service ever! This shop had my car for en entire month, afer telling me it should not be more than 4-6 days!
They failed to pressure test my engine before tearing it out, rebuilding it and putting it back into my car! After finally getting my car back (took 3 weeks), The very next day I had the same problem happen to me on my way to work, I retured the car that same day... they THEN did a pressure test on the engine only to find out that the engine was not the cause of my problems! I paid for an engine I DID NOT NEED! After taking the car back to them... after another 4 days they replaced a part I was not notified of, and did not approve prior to it being installed! Costing me even more money!
Not to mention their total lack of communication, they never called me back when they said they would, and kept making excauses for the extreame delay of the repairs!
Not happy at all! Do not waste your time or your money at this business!
They are only out to make money, upsell and repair things that dont need fixed!
Michigan Motor Exchange - avoid like the plague
In late 2006 I purchased a engine from Michigan Motor Exchange for my Jeep. It was the famous 4.0L inline six. I paid a pretty penny for the engine.. $2,377.28 and they did not install it. The engine comes with a 50,000 mile/24 month warranty on parts only. When I received the engine documents came along with brief installation notes. Specifically stating that the distributor on this engine rotates counter clock wise, and this is the way that you prime the engine since the distributor is directly connected to the oil pump. This was my first Jeep, so I went by the information they supplied - they've built thousands of these engines so you wouldn't think twice about what they tell you.
Approximately 200 miles after installation I had a slight knock or tick. It was very hard to determine where the noise was coming from and what it was. I promptly called the company to see what they had to say about it. I was told by one of the employees in the Waterford location that lifter noise is very common in these engines during the break in procedure. I asked them what I should do and I was told to continue driving it and if the problem got worse to give them a call. I asked about what would happen if something broke, catastrophic failure. They responded by telling me that I had a 50,000 mile warranty and to "drive it until it quits". At the 7,000 mile mark the engine threw a rod out of the side of the block.
They covered the warranty, but not with out a fee. If I remember correctly I ended up spending another $400.
The new engine ran great, it was a night and day difference. There must have been something wrong with the other engine from the get go, or it could have been my error by priming the engine per their instructions. Who knows.
I followed the suggested oil change intervals per the warranty and break in procedures. At around 4,000 miles, the engine began to knock. Learning from my last experience I promptly quit driving the vehicle and had it towed home. I called the company the next day and they stressed that they were skeptical about the damage.. "we sell a ton of these engines and I don't have them come back very often, especially twice". I told them that I would take it out as soon as I could since it was still winter time.
Recently I was able to deliver the engine to them - 500 miles round trip. Three weeks go by and I haven't been contacted, so I give them a call. I was told that the engine had severely over heated which resulted in a spun bearing. I stated that I had no problems with over heating and that the engine never went about 160 degrees, and being the winter, the ice never melted off the hood. I talked to the guy (Chris) who looked at the engine. After some arguing, I accepted the fact that the engine was damaged. The engine was not going to be covered under warranty, but that they would kindly give me a discount and offered repair for $500 which I declined.
When engines are rebuilt, companies use what is called a heat tab. It's a plug that you install on the engine and if it over heats the center of the plug will disappear. I was told numerous times that this is the first thing they look at when recieving an engine for warranty. I was very upset that they checked the heat tab and determined the engine was out of warranty but they proceeded to tear the engine down, leaving me with completely useless parts.
I arranged for the engine to be picked up and parts be shipped to me to be possibly reused on another engine. One of these parts was the cylinder head. I took the head to a local machine shop to be checked out, it was a good possibility that the head had wrapped due to the "severe overheating". Especially if the coolant reached a high enough temperature to heat the oil up hot enough to ruin a bearing.
The head checked out PERFECT. It's very common to see some warpage on these cylinder heads since they are long and skinny. Not the case with this one. I explained what was going on to the companies owner and he stated that it did have a heat tab on it, a heat tab that never melted. If the engine had gotten hot enough to melt one tab, and hot enough to heat the oil, this tab should have melted as well considering that the majority of the coolant exiting the block goes right past this tab.
I called the company, furious. I talked to Chris, the guy that checked it out. He could not give me a straight answer regarding why one tab out of three melted. The only explanation I was give was that they other two tabs could have been more insulated. Well, this makes sense... but wait.. the coolant got SO hot that it severely over heated, and was able to heat the oil up hot enough to ruin a bearing. There is absolutely no way that only one tab melted if this was the case.
I asked to talk to the owner to come up with a solution that was fair to both parties. I work in the industry, I know that warranties suck, especially if it's the second or third time around. I was told that he WAS the owner and he was not willing to do anything for me. He did however offer to repair the engine for $400 and provide me with a 90 day warranty.
He did admit the fault of the incorrect installation instructions regarding the priming procedure, but he would not admit that I have not gotten my moneys worth. These engines are known to easily last 200,000 miles without a second thought. They commonly last up to 300,000 miles with good care. There are even some older AMC inline 6's that have lasted OVER 500,000 miles. And all I can manage to get out of a brand new rebuilt engine is 11,000 miles. $2377.28 for 11,000 miles. For $500 I could have bought a "beater" that would have lasted double that.
I do not suggest doing business with this company.. It is my opinion that there was a defective part but the company was bitter about already having to replace the engine and now again a second time, so a heat tab was made to look like it melted. There was one comment that leads me to believe this.. When I most recently talked to Chris, I stated that they took the engine apart without my approval. He stated that I agreed to it because I gave it to them for warranty repair. He was correct, but, if the first thing they look at is the heat tab to determine if the engine was over heated, in this case the tab showed this, why would you still disassemble the engine? He said that this was not the first thing he looked at, he looked at it after they had disassembled the engine and found the bad bearing. This contradicts what I was told several times, twice by Chris himself. "The first thing we do when we receive an engine for warranty issues is check the heat tab to see if the engine had been over heated". Now all of a sudden it's not what you do? Checking the heat tab is now a after thought?
Steer clear of this company, they are not customer service oriented.
