Medical Liability Mutual Insurance
Non-renewal of malpractice insurance policy after 20 years.
I am an orthopedic surgeon and have been underwritten for my malpractice insurance by Medical Liability Mutual Insurance company for 20 years. In that period of time I have paid premiums in excess of 2.3 million dollars with one single settlement payout of $400,000.
Last year Berkshire-Hathaway bought Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company and has dropped coverage of many physicians who they consider to be a risk to their profit margin. I have currently several law suits pending, all defendable, and yet due to a change in the company's policy they chose not to renew my insurance. I work in a high risk/litigious community in Brooklyn treating the underserved.
It is awful that a company like Berkshire-Hathaway (MLMIC) which is given the privilege by the Insurance Commissioner of New York state to underwrite policies in this state would jeopardize patient care in underserved communities by the termination of insurance policies to physicians who elect to work in these communities. As a result fewer doctors will opt to work in these communities.
