Magnet4less.com shipping costs deception

magnet4less.com has ok products, the problem is, that like so many others out there, they seem to think it is just fine to deceive the consumer with shipping charges that are actually going into their pockets to pad their profits.

For the products I ordered they stated on their website that the shipping would be $19.95. Checking with the Post Office upon receiving it, they actually paid $2.41. Figure maybe a dollar for the box, and they overcharged me $16.54.

When I called to talk to them about this, they did not sound surprised to hear the complaint, referred me to their "Shipping Policy" (which said nothing about this that I later could see) and abruptly hung up.

Too bad they are so rude, because if they were willing to learn a little, about how to do business in the United States, I could have helped them by pointing out that this sort of problem can be avoided if they would simply call it "Shipping and Handling", not just "Shipping".

The problem with their shipping cost policy is simply that if i have have a small order where shipping cost more than the goods then i go else where. Why would any person spend $20.00 on shipping when the items ordered cost $5.00.

Yes they are a rip off.

Also not all of their technical data on the magnets is correct. A magnet with 2lbs of pull and one with 250lbs of pull do not both have tyhe same gouse rating.

Can not agree more, they are opening charging over half of the order value and label it as shipping so that they can put those in their pocket as well.

We need to have more business to sell those neo magnets and not exclusive to them, the Texans will then bend their thick profit to suit our market.

i live in hawaii, try that amount and multiply exponentially...

the prices are rather on the high side, then get the shipping charges and it's like wtf %@$^#^^#^@ is this...

i called them and their attitude is you don't like it, go somewhere else...

and i'm purchasing over $1000.00 worth of stuff from them each time...

no loyalty customer incentives, no nothing...

just attitude and tuff, if you don't like it, to bad...

if i had the capital i'd start up a business and run these buggers out of business just for the heck of it...

:o)

Almost all retailers are considering shipping a cost of goods and need to maintain their margin on all invested dollars. Years past shipping was offwered at cost or cost plus as a service but times have changed.

In this case I couldn't find the product anywhere else.

This is common practice. They increase the cost of shipping to account for not only shipping materials and actual shipping cost, but also to include labor of packing the shipping and any other overhead.

And yes, they do ad some extra margin in there for profit. This is pretty standard.

They tell you the shipping price up front. If you don't like it, then buy from someone else.

Hi there.

Thought I'd stop back by to see if anyone appreciated my advice about online shopping, how inflating shipping costs by 700% is "pretty standard" and that "if you don't like it, then buy from someone else."

You're welcome, world. I really should be charging for this wisdom.

So it's ok to be unethical if a lot of others are? I don't buy that.

I don't see where the ethical dilemma is in this situation. They advertised a shipping charge and that is what you paid. So what if they didn't explicitly state that handling was included in that charge. You paid x dollars for the product and 20 dollars for shipping. Handling has to fit into that equation somewhere. What's next, a complaint about how the product cost does not split out the warehouse lighting fee? Obviously the product should be cheaper right. I mean why should you pay for someone else's electric bill.

At the very least I could see them charging 20 bucks for shipping to deter small orders. Small orders are usually very inefficient for businesses to process. Could they really make any money when somebody orders a single 10 cent magnet if they didn't charge an extra premium for shipping?

Wait ... I think I'm starting to understand why you are so mad. The look on your face when you realized you paid $20.10 for a magnet the size of a grain of rice must have been priceless. :(

Overall I don't think 20 bucks is high enough to be malicious especially for an industrial magnet supply company. Now if the complaint were that you were lured in to buy a car with a limited time offer sticker price of 1000 only to find out that there was also a 14000 delivery charge then you might have a case.

What *** me off is that this complaint might tarnish the reputation of a legitimate honest company. I give props to the guy who hung up on you though. More proof that they know how to operate an efficient business model.
