AI Highlights
  • - Gift certificate bought 7/2022 for a spa; expired 1/2023; no policy found online or on the card.
  • - Owner offered 50% credit; I accepted.

My sisters gifted me an online gift certificate for my birthday on 7/2022 to luxury health spa. I was pregnant at the time and wasn't available to use it right away.

I had my baby on 12/28/2022 via C-section. Once I was 100% recovered I scheduled my appointment for 06/17/2023 as I was getting ready to pay I presented my gift certificate the girl in the front desk informed me my gift certificate expired 1/2023 I told her I wasn't aware that gift certificate have an expiration date I thought under California law you have up to 12 months to 5 years to use your gift card / gift certificate unless it was a promotion (which it wasn't) she said expiration date was on the gift certificate I asked her if she could show me the gift certificate policy on her website or on the actual gift certificate. She said she didn't know where it was or if they had one on the website. I couldn't find any policies on the website or the gift certificate.

She called the owner on the phone and explained to her what was going on. The owner said I didn't let her know I had a gift certificate when I booked the appointment on the phone, the only thing she could do for me is give me 50% credit of my gift certificate. I explained to her that I wasn't aware I had to let her know I was using a gift certificate, I've never done it anywhere else. I also told her I didn't think it was fair that I only get 50% credit on a gift certificate.

The owner said that's the only thing she could do for me, or just not honor the gift certificate at all. I could take it or leave it.

After going back and forth and not getting anywhere, I decided to take 50% to pay the difference. Not before expressing my disappointment.
