Train service/schedules

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - The organization is disorganized and wasteful with bloated projects.
  • - Schedule changes disrupt Ronkonkoma riders; direct trains are limited.

This is by far the worst organization. They are so disorganized and hemorrhage money with bloated over budget projects and many inefficiencies with staff and time management.

Then the continue to use trains from the 1970s! You cannot make this stuff up.

They recently changed all the train schedules which is a major disruption to people like me that go to Ronkonkoma. They have a 5:04p direct and a 5:59p direct. So if you get off at 5p and be near Penn, youre now waiting over 45min for the next train.

Or deal with a transfer which may or may not be on time for the connection.

The Grand Central line only offers 1 train direct to Ronkonkoma which is a 5:39p, the only other train is a transfer at 5:59p. Needless to say they really screwed those going to Ronkonkoma. Would you believe they have a few trains that go all the way east to Brentwood (2 stops away) and heads back to NYC!

What is the meaning of that? Makes no sense.

They are an abusive monopoly.

Pros:
  • Way to get to work
Cons:
  • Expensive ticket prices
  • Staff appear miserable

Preferred solution: More Penn or Grand Central direct trains to Ronkonkoma

User's recommendation: Carpool. Sorry there isn’t another railroad in town.

Compliment, thank an employee

AI Highlights
  • - Bathroom closed at 8pm, delaying a cane user.
  • - Anthony Baum helped me in and refused a tip.
  • - Another conductor couldn't help; the app wasn't working.

I took the train from Penn to Babylon with a friend and when we arrived at Babylon I tried to use the ladies room but it had closed at 8pm , 10 minutes before our train arrived. I was extremely frustrated because although I needed to use the restroom on the train I did not because I could not open the heavy doors between the cars while managing to use my cane.

The men at the station behind the windows just followed their rule book and quoted me the rules and offered me no help. Only Anthony Baum , another employee came by and let me in. Thank God for a kind LIRR employee. Last Friday when arriving from Ronkonkoma to Jamaica another conductor when I asked him which track I needed to get to transfer to Brooklyn he followed the rules and said cant help you because the app is not working.

End of story for him; he did his job but how do I get to the train walking slower than I used to trying to manage with a cane? You need to employ more people like Anthony Baum who works in Babylon. He provides service to customers and does more than just doing his job.

He was offered a tip and refused to take it. Thanks Anthony, Joanne Noonan, satisfied customer tonight 4/5/23

User's recommendation: Hire more people like Anthony Baum

Not in favor of upcoming schedule changes.

AI Highlights
  • - Riders on West Hempstead line rely on a 6:53am train to Atlantic Terminal.
  • - Feb 2023 changes may inconvenience riders as ridership rebounds post-Covid.

I am a fairly new resident of a village in Hempstead as of August 2022. Myself and many other LIRR customers along the West Hempstead line rely on taking the LIRR train at this station everyday starting at 6:53am and completing my ride at Atlantic Terminal.

My young son also relies on this train to get him to the East New York Station, where he then heads to Broadway Junction to go to school in Manhattan. The West Hempstead line's major stops are Jamaica Avenue and Atlantic Terminal. At the end of February 2023 the MTA LIRR is due to make changes to this line's schedule which will inconvenience other riders on what seems to be a fully occupied train. They probably did a survey regarding these changes during Covid and now that ridership is back up the decision need to be reviewed.

This is not going to be good for so many of us. I can speak myself and the other riders to please leave the train times here.

Thank you in advance

Excessive Delay

AI Highlights
  • - We stopped at Hicksville for about 35 minutes.
  • - Delays happen often and no one explains what's going on.

We stop at Hicksville about 35 minutes. THEN someone from the train FINALLY informed us the wait would be a bit longer.

Delays happen frequently. And no one is around to tell passengers what the *** is going on...

Preferred solution: Staff up- communicate more on trains.

Why are you doing trackwork on Jewish New Year when customers need the trains to be running?

I spoke to a person who understood my situation. He gave me alternatives and suggestions to navigate around the situation.

Terrible service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Few NYPENN trains to Little Neck/Douglaston rush hour.
  • - The 5:14 express to Great Neck was removed.
  • - Rules not enforced: loud phones, masks ignored.
Updated by user Mar 07, 2026

I had not taken the train for about 3 years having been transferred to a location where I can finally drive/park. Upon taking it again due to a lack of parking situation, the train never stopped at Mineola (a major hub) as scheduled and their app for buying tickets is a rip off b/c you cannot buy round trip tickets and activate when you need them.

You are forced into buying round trip daily ticket for a few dollars less but once you buy them, they are activated and you must use within 24 hours---so disgusting.

Further the digital signs inside the cars are not always accurate which confuses riders. Obviously, Hochul and the NYC mayor could care less about the commuters who btw are the real fabric of NYC.

Original review updated Dec 13, 2021
Very few (1) train from NYPENN to Little Neck and Douglaston during rush hour (4:47 pm thru 6:07 pm). However, there are several to Port Washington and Great Neck (all of these stations are on the Port Washington branch) during the same time period.

They took away the popular 5:14 to Great Neck (which did stop at Little Neck and Great Neck) and was the only express in that hour.

No way are there fewer passengers going to Little Neck and Douglaston than to Port Washington and Great Neck so somebody miscounted.
Also, the "rules" are NEVER enforced like people talking extremely loud on their cell phones, not wearing masks, littering, etc.
Also, this is for both the MTA and LIRR-the section that LIRR trains arrive into in PENN station is filthy, falling apart, homeless everywhere without masks and others without masks=covid super spreader. There is no security (cameras) and you only see the conductors when collecting tickets so you are on your own if anything bad happens.
Pros:
  • To avoid driving
Cons:
  • Not enough trains
  • Expensive
  • Dirty

Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered

User's recommendation: Do NOT ride trains if do not have to; move out of Long Island asap

No service to my destination

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Riders to Great Neck/Port Washington exceed Little Neck/Douglaston.
  • - Rush-hour trains to Douglaston/Little Neck are half as many.

There is no way there are more riders to Great Neck and Port Washington than to Little Neck and Douglaston (all same Port Washington line/branch) yet 1/2 the# of trains during rush hour to Douglaston and Little Neck. For example one train to Little Neck between 4:47 and 6:15 pm which is packed in part since they took away the popular 5:14 pm express to Great Neck....something very fishy going on.....

Cons:
  • Dirty
  • Covid superspreaders
  • Not enough trains

Preferred solution: Deliver product or service ordered

User's recommendation: Move out of state or at least off LI while u can....
