Not a sustainable ongoing program

The staff will also not correct the student's work. They will ask the parent to mark the work. This further demonstrates the lack of support from staff at the center.

Original review Jan 10, 2019
My son started Kumon from the lowest level and is now 7 months into the program. It has been very time consuming for us to follow the program.

As the levels progress, the exercises take longer to complete. The staff at the center do not explain any concepts to the child. They assume the child will know how to do a new exercise. If the child does not know how to do a new set of exercises, they say that he should go back to the previous level even though he knows how to do that level.

This is not the solution to assisting the child to do a new exercise. The solution is to explain to the child the new concept, for him to complete the exercise. So the program would be beneficial if the staff at the center explained concepts to the child before the child starts doing the exercise. The support at the center is zero.

The parent has to teach the child to make the program work. If the parent does not have the time to teach the child then, the child will not progress. The student must do exercises every day 7 days a week - no miss. The parent has to prepared to assist the child every day.

The staff make the child repeat the books if they take longer than what they believe the child should take, rather than because the child struggles with the exercise. Often my son will take a long time to do exercises because he wants to go away and play and does not want to do the work, not because he does not understand the work. He is also very slow at writing. When he is given a repeat book, he gets very upset and questions why he has to repeat something he already knows how to do.

Sometimes the staff will give him the same book multiple times and even the parents become frustrated about this. He is tired of the program and I question whether he will want to continue with the program beyond this year. The staff will tell you to reduce the pages the child completes everyday to reduce the time it takes him to finish exercises, but this means that the child will progress at a much slower pace. It is also a very expensive program $130 to $140 a month.

Essentially all you receive is material and attend the center to sit tests after the child completes each level. I would probably look for another program that offers teaching assistance, as this program is not sustainable on ongoing basis.

Please call Kumon office. They refund all your money. Kumon company told me on the phone that they refund 100% up to 5 years of your child's tuition if you are not satisfied with their horrible service.

They have lots of issues. Center to which my son goes many times they run out of new sheets & due to that reason they give old sheets. I was been told by young tutor. They don't put any kind of efforts to improve kids ability.

Some benefit for a LOT of hassle

My husband thinks doing repetitive math is the way to go. Just drill them until they know it.

We are up to our third child doing this. I, personally, HATE and LOATH Kumon. I know the kids hate it too. I feel like we spend a lot of money on these worksheets.

It's the parents who spend the vast majority of time correcting them and nagging the child to do them while the Kumon tutor sees them twice a week. My kids have expressed low self-esteem because of the constant struggle with this entire program. I can say that my kids do know their multiplication tables cold, but at what cost? On top of it all, the 2 owners I've dealt with over the years are so arrogant and nasty.

I have taught my kids not to use the word hate liberally since it really is a strong word, but I can only say over and over again that I HATE Kumon. I'm far from convinced, as my husband is, that it's an effective way of teaching.

Complain about Kumon in Chantilly, VA

Dear Kumon Staff, I have an issues about Kumon policy, and procedures how to give homework material to the students . First ,my daughter in the 6th grade now, and when I register her in Kumon on last May to take a math class, you start with her from 1st grade material in very very basic math, when she get a very good test score as 5th grade class , I accept in order to move on, but I found till now you repeat and repeat the same basic math material as addition, multiplication, and subtraction. You made her fell very burred, and dislike the math. What's going on, is this the way to gain money to keep the student stacked in same point to do the routine things ? be advice because I'm not satisfy . Salwan/ 703-675-**** salwan_1968@***.com

Kumon - Stay Away

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Echo the comments below. An individual tutor has given us far better results. My sons reading level regressed over the summer while he was supposedly making progress at Kumon. I went into the Berkeley Heights NJ facility during one of his sessions and he was literally sitting alone getting no attention at all. Thousands of dollars for worksheets and arrogance on top of it all. Stay away. Back with a tutor and he is doing much better than 4 months of Kumon

Excellent program for serious parents

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

This is a great program for parents that take seriously their kids' education. My child attended for four and a half years the program and is now a successful graduate of medical school.

My younger child attended for five years and is doing great in the undergraduate program.

At the center my kids attended the instructor helped them a lot when they had questions.

Sometimes they will be at the center for 20 mins or less, sometimes for more than an hour.

This helped greatly my kids but I was required to grade the homework which might not be convenient for some parents.

When we went on vacations we did request the homework in advance and the homework came with us to Europe, Hawaii, etc.

Just because you thought it was a horrible program doesn't mean it is for others. Maybe four months didn't allow you enough time to realize the potential of the program.

I sons did it for 5 years each and it made math very easy for them. They were both able to skip two grade levels and attended high school for math while still in middle school. My oldest is now a senior in high school but takes a variable calculus class at a Junior College.

Kumon provides a solid foundation in math and give them crazy mental calculation skills in preparation for High School and College. My oldest says provides a good foundation up to middle school then his BC calculus teacher took his skills to the next level.

You saying that Kumon helped your child graduate medical school notorious. I have graduated Harvard Medical School, and I have only gone to Kumon for about 4 months before quitting.

It’s a horrible program. Forces kids to learn through meaningless repetition, instead of taking time to explain to the student the reasoning behind that.

Don’t say the reason for your child’s success be on Kumon, he/she has worked a lot harder in other areas where she is the one that deserves respect. Sorry if I come of as rude for saying this, but it is my opinion.

Fired for No Reason

Okay, so I was an employee at the Hazel Dell, WA location until this morning.

I was called this morning by the owner of the branch, and was told that my employment was terminated. No warnings, nothing. Why was I fired? Well, I would love to know that as well.

I was told there was apparently complaints, which I had no knowledge of prior. I worked hard to always do exactly as I was told, and I was made to feel like I was doing the best out of everyone else there. I asked what I specifically did, and the owner told me that they would not disclose that information.

What?!?! Horrible place to work with a toxic owner.

Program not what I expected

As soon as I informed the center that I will be removing my grandson for the reading program I could & continuing with the math for now I noticed Sonalli has nothing to say to me, actually rude. The 30 minutes per subject is not true, he has been attending 8 months & no review with me yet. I’m done, going to find another program. His previous work have come back in his bag. It only teaches a parent to be consist 30 min a day.

Which idiots came up with this

I hate it. I was actually doing packets that were many levels too low.

I was finishing up things like standard deviation and quadratic formulas. in Kumon, they gave the four operations with positive and negative numbers. I learned that before fourth grade. I even wrapped my head around the concept of negative numbers before that.

Kumon also jumps too quickly. On one packet, it went from converting fractions into decimals to the division of mixed numbers. WHAT?!?

It's a stupid thing that piles up stress and anxiety while also being degrading when getting packets you got from months ago because you were trying to get them in on time. I have gone through multiple nights crying my eyes out trying to do it.

I also have ADHD and because of how boring, monotone, and degrading it is, I either avoid it (which ends up wasting thousands of dollars if you do it multiple times) or trying to do it.

it is then where I just stare out a window either crying or observing how a tree sways. Yeah.

In other words, avoid it as if it was a colony of bullet ants.

Agr33d. Huge waste of time, especially if you're like me and just sent there because you got a B not an A and you don't n33d help in maths at all.

Honestly, I hope someone can shut down Kumon, because I couldn't stand the worksh33ts repeating the same boring nuisances, stuff that shouldn't be bothering me until the years ahead of me. I hope that you are out of the damned place to live a better life.

I understand how you might feel. Though I don't have ADHD, the workload can be challenging.

If it is still stressful, you can ask your instructor to possibly reduce the amount of sheets per Kumon packet. That worked wonders for me during times of hardships. Also, I've realized that many complain of the material level first introduced to incoming students. I never encountered that problem, since I was enrolled at a young age and started from the bottom up, but people need to realize that not all franchises work the same.

Luckily, I happen to go to a well irganized and beneficial location, while others go to ones owned by some bad people. Keep that in mind.

Ya boi-so true. Me and ma boi sajnay go to Qumon also and it's so retarded. We r going to mathnasium-it's so much better.

Well how about "you and ya boi" learn to respect. As a kid (which you clearly are) you don't want work piled up on you, meaning unless you are a high achieving child in the first place you won't like Kumon, which rewards children with a good work ethic.

Kumon just isn't a right fit for you.

That doesn't mean you can spew nonsense saying it's "retarded". Grow up.

Eh, I was considered "high achievement", and Kumon felt more like punishment for being "smart". Oh and, the whole site is "pissed consumer", so just let the person vent and complain, because that's part of this site.

The name of that company sounds downright obscene. Is that somebody's idea of a joke ?

Good for speedy solving, terrible at teaching.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Kumon is decent, but it barely teaches.

I am enrolled in both Math and English, and currently on J Levels.

The program is mind-numbing and causes frustration all around. For math, you can get exceptionally quick at small things like factorization and solving for X in basic algebra, but when learning about new subjects, they provide the smallest example with no instructions on how the steps were achieved. The math program is constant repetition of problems that are near impossible to solve and even has problems where the tutors can't solve as well. How is a child supposed to do those?

English is terrible after the basic writing and grammar levels. It does not teach anything at all. The levels are just "Read this big paragraph, then rewrite it by hand", passing it off as a summary. Then it'll ask some question like "Why did X know that Y did this?" and you just rewrite a section of the passage that says "X had walked into Y doing the action and stayed hidden."

I wouldn't recommend Kumon after your child begins to learn new concepts in math, when a textbook or other online programs can do it. Do not bother enrolling them into the reading program as well unless they are young and can't form sentences yet with proper grammar.

Kumon- you should know better

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I am in the G level of Kumon. So 1st off, when I go to this Kumon, the 1st thing I hear when I get there is the instructors yelling at young kids for talking. Sure, they have an early learning program but you should at least give them, you know , a bit of time to grow up.

Also, I wrote a notice to Kumon about what they can do to help their business and actually help kids. Then they told my mom about "rude comments" when I was trying to help.

Finally, its the work. They just slam the sheet on your desk and say "Do it." When I get corrections back, they don't say a word. They just expect you to figure it out and teach yourself how to do it. When I get there it is dead silence. No communication and when I as for help they just say "Look at the example and do it yourself."

People deserve money by working hard, not slacking off! So please for all parents, don't make the same mistake.

My son was going to Springfield Kumon, their owner Lee is rude and do not have nice behavior with her customer. Initially, when my son started we were happy, then after few months, they started reducing his worksheet to 2 pages. My son is very good at math but still, in order to make money, they took 9 months to finish level be. They even repeating book every week even after my son did not start his first set/round. all they want to make money and make Kumon bad. I would suggest all the parents avoid going to Springfield Kumon and look for other alternatives.
