Diconnect of gas service without notice

I am living away in Canada for a few years and have a family living in my Pennsylvania home. Unfortunately the post service is bad and so my bill always arrives late but gets paid and I have had a continuous gas account at this residence since 1995. In September the bill for about 140.00 was late as usual and without any notice to me or the residents in the house the gas was disconnected. It cost them over $400.00 to have the service restored as I was away at work. No one received advice that the service would we interrupted either at my home or the residence. The actually bill which was due on September 21, arrived in my mail box on October 1. If there was any other alternative I would dump this company in a heartbeat and am looking at alternative energy sources for when I return.
