Product Fails

Kidde - Product Fails

Five smoke alarms were installed in Feb 2021. One failed in Feb 2023 and one in July 2024.

10 year alarms are advertised. No way. I replaced both. Further they changed the pigtail for the latest replacement, which makes the replacement more difficlult.

Had I known that, I would never had bought the replacement from them. I would have bought a different brand.

Very poor customer service

I was missing a mounting plate for a new detector, so I contacted customer service. James Harrison, Manager, said it would take a month to receive the part.

I suggested exchanging the new unit I have for one with a mounting plate, but he refused. This left me without a working safety device for longer than necessary.

I have done a 180 on Kidde customer service. The smoke detector mounting plate that was going to take a month to receive, arrived in two business days.

This is extraordinary customer service and I will now change my rating to 5 stars. Way to go James Harrison!

Lol until you realize this company is so *** *** They have to pay 12 million in defective fire extinguishers. And have recall on over 7 smoke and co detectors(that wont read a fire) i would stay far away from this company.

Just went down a rabbit hole with them because i was just woken up to a certain model p12040 that always has false positives.

Im in an airbnb and Its 4 am. *** KIDDE

Poor WiFi performance on carbo monoxide and smoke detector

Purchased Smart smoke + carbon monoxide alarm (P4010ACSCO-WF) 2 years ago. Although difficult to install it finally connected.

Work fine for about 3 months. It then started losing WiFi connection for 2-3 days then automatically reconnect again. The WiFi modem is only 12ft away (line of sight).

A month ago it stopped connecting. It's a boat anchor now.

Ordered a lockbox from ShopKidde.com. When I went to trace the order the email address did not work.

Finding a phone number was difficult. When I tried to call, I was told it was the wrong number and was given another. This number eventually got me to a recording with static and a very long email address that doesn't work.

I called a tech support number that told me I had the wrong person. He got me a correct email address.

This is the response I got from this email address.

Normally lockboxes take 4-8 business days to be made but unfortunately there is a backorder holding all orders from being processed.

ETA is not currently available. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Smoke alarm failure

Model 10Y29 10 battery life smoke alarm failed after only 3 years 10 months.

Cost more to return it and get it back under guarantee than purchasing a new one, they have got it sown up so there is no value in the 10 guarantee.

Would I buy another what do you think.

Absolutely no response to defective product

We bought many of Kidde wired smoke and fire alarms for our new house. One of them failed; alarming spontaneously.

Your website mentions cleaning it which did not help. I also replaced the battery without benefit. Furthermore, it says to go to where we bought it (Home Depot).

They say that I need to go through you. I have written at least 4 emails through the website and direct email without any response

Horrible customer service

We bought a 3 pack of smoke detectors for our home and two were fine but the 3rd was defective. We tried twice calling the company to see if we could just get the one replaced but the rep just kept talking in circles.

She kept asking weird questions and never gave us an answer to getting a replacement.

I am so frustrated why don't they back their products. This is such bad customer service.

I had to smash 5 Kidde detectors for going off over a 2 year period of time to stop them - they are impossible to shutoff via the permanent shutoff switches, you must break them open to shut them off - 10 year models. Recent apartment I moved had 3 of them I had to smash when they started blaring. 2 previous apartment - DO NOT BUY

Preferred solution: recall all 10 year models add a shutoff feature. 1 happened on a less than 2 month device Put wire-mesh, or filter in units to stop dust/bugs getting into them. It is 100% impossible without breaking open device to switch off internal switch

This smoke detector goes off when there's no cause and didn't go off when there was a fire. It seems to go off only when someone gets out of the shower and the hall is full of steam.

Costly Warranty

We have had Kidde Smoke Detectors fail before the end of the warranty. The problem is, under the terms of their warranty, you need to send it in along with return postage.

It is bad enough sending it in, but return postage also required is ridiculous, in our opinion. We have simply put the postage costs towards replacements.

False and misleading advertising and failure to assume responsibility

On 11/2/2020, I purchased two (2) Kidde Worry-Free Combination Smoke and CO Alarms (Model P3010CU) at a local BJs Warehouse. Both units came from the same Kidde display carton.

After installing the units, I began to fill in the Product Support question information on the enclosed instructions. One unit had a Date Code of 6/17/2020, but the other had a 9/3/2019 Date Code. I can understand a 5-month production/distribution lag time, but I do not appreciate a 14-month lag time. Especially since the units came from the same Kidde display carton and the unit package labeling touts a 10-year warranty, which was misleading in this case in that 14 months of the warranty had elapsed.

I emailed a complaint to Kidde Customer Service on 11/16/20120, but no answer as of 12/8/2020, so I called Kidde 1-80*-880-****.

I was told the distribution lag time was BJs fault, not Kidde. I explained that the 2 units, with different date codes, came from the same Kidde intermediate container of multiple units. The Kidde representative still blamed BJs.

I asked about the failure of a reply to my initial email. Her answer was that it was not her responsibility with no further explanation.

Defective product

I purchased 2 Kidde smoke detectors with Lithium batteries that are supposed to last 10 years. Just recently mine have started going off randomly, sometime during the day, sometimes during the night.

It makes for a horrible night sleep wondering if they might go off and if it is for real or not. I have vacuumed them per the instructions numerous time to no avail.

These products are supposed to be lifesavers, not life destroyers. I am very disappointed and dissatisfied with Kiddes smoke detectors.

I finally had to break the seal on the back of the detectors to permanently turn them off because they were going off randomly on their on. I vacuumed them out per the instructions numerous times but they still don’t work correctly.

They also contain Lithium batters that are suppose to last 10 years.

They are 2 years old. I purchased these detectors to help save our lives if there was a fire or smoke but both of these detectors are not reliable and I will not trust them to alert me or my family.

Unable to contact by email or phone

I bought 5 new smoke defectors from Home Depot the Kidde brand. The directions call for a mounting plate that I don't see.

It could be something I am doing wrong. Even so 3 won't work I have currently have detectors because they say it is a center mount. I called Saturday 1/27/2018 and got a recording they were in a staff meeting. I then emailed on 1/27/18 and never got a response.

I called Tuesday 1/30/18 and was on hold 40 minutes. Unacceptable.

I will be returning all 5 later today. They need to learn to be responsive.
