Karki Family Photography - Baby Photos Review from Washington, District Of Columbia

One of the WORST experiences of doing business with someone. I have sent multiple emails and called almost 20+ times to Carrie & her assistant April Fletcher. They do not pick up the calls and have not responded to my emails or phone calls. All this because I told them that the photoshoot they did was not up to my expectations and not done right????? I am sure I have that right as a customer. I am just amazed that I got the shoot done back in November and told her about the photos on 2nd Dec 2014 and today is 02/23/2015 and almost 3 months later, no word from these ladies. I read 63 reviews on her page which were positive and I am almost certain that no matter what happens, someone can't be this evil to keep my child's first ever photoshoot's pics with them and not respond at all. I do not understand what to do and HOW TO GET MY C CHILD'S PHOTOS FROM THESE PEOPLE.

I read your other comments on different sites and her response to you.

You sound abusive, and the fact that you think you should get the photos without paying is ridiculous.

If they were so bad, why do you want them?

And the fact you are publicly calling her evil, I can't imagine what you must have said to her privately!

FABO!

Carrie Is AMAZING! I was happy to find Carrie on Groupon, and here assistant explained to me I could get a better deal with another discount program they offer. I went with that package. We were outdoors with our family, and we did the posed and serious photos we thought we wanted. But somehow Carrie managed to catch some great candid shots of my daughters and my husband without us knowing! The only down side is the time it takes to edit. But when she is fully booked she is seeing at least 6 people a week. So 3 weeks for editing was not bad.

Great photos

Not sure why this one guy keeps trying to say Carrie is horrible ect. I hired Carrie for head shots and LOVED working with her. She was on time, met me at a museum, and and I got LOTS of photos I liked for a really great price. I only needed a few photos, and I had them in a few days. She really was a miracle worker and made me look about 30 years younger. She has taken photos at a few parties I have been at too, and I plan to use her for my engagement in a few months. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from all the people I know who have used her.

The good and the bad.

I hired Carrie in November take photos of my newborn. I am not pleased or displeased. However, I saw complaints about her and think my story is a perfect example of the type of person she is. I called her, and I wanted the Groupon. We talked and I decided to go with another deal she had for about $100. Carrie was on time, we tried a lot of things with my infant daughter. But it was hard to get the baby to calm down. We also took some family photos. And she took photos of my older daughter. Then we tried with the baby again. She was probably at our home almost 2 hours, trying to let me calm the baby and playing with my other daughter and getting some good photos of her. She told me that she was not too confident in the photos she got of my baby, and said if they were bad she was willing to come out for a second shoot. That night she loaded them and they were not that good. She came out again the next day, and again my daughter was colicky, and would not stop crying. I asked Carrie if I could just get back the difference between the Groupon, and the package I ordered. She Explained that she was not 100% sure if she could refund it back to my card or not, but would text me after she asked her partner if she needed to mail me a check or if she could return it to my card. The next day Carrie called and said "Ya know what, I am just going to refund you the whole shoot. I fit you into a day that I was near you, and it was not hard for me to come back, and it was on day's I do not normally see clients, so I did not loose anything. So there is no need to charge you." I told her we did like the ones of our family, but we have lots of those, and really she should be paid for the shoot fee. She insisted on a full refund. We also asked that she not put the photos in the viewable gallery, and she removed the link ASAP. I even tried to send her a tip through her website, and she did not process the payment and thanked me again. Later we decided there were a few images we really wanted printed, and asked Carrie if we could have access to the images to order some prints from her. She gave us a private link that has a password. And the charges for prints were full price, not the discounted rate she has for her deals, but she did not make us pay for the shoot. Because of what I do professionally, I have referred a LOT of clients to her that have gotten some amazing photos. I just wish my daughter had been more cooperative, but as Carrie said, Babies are unpredictable. Yes, I was not happy with the photos she took of my infant daughter, but I did like the ones she took of the family. Also Carrie did not have to refund us anything, but she refunded more than we asked her to. She is really good with kids and infants. And I have heard great things about her from the people I have referred. Her work for us was not the best but she was kind to give us a full refund and give us good service when we were a bit difficult Reading the story the one guy keeps telling, having worked with her, and seeing her responses, I think there is a lot missing that could explain her resistance to him on this issue.

Carrie Karki is the BEST!!!!!!!!!

Carrie was da bomb! I saw her on FB, but as a guy complaining about her. I was impressed by Carrie's work, and ended up contacting her. I was scared at first because there was another link on a photo stealing site, but when I contacted Carrie and mentioned certain galleries, she remembered the people and the places well. There are SOOOO many photos in each gallery, I highly doubted they were not hers, and nobody said she was stealing. They just were commenting that she gave lots of proofs. I am glad I chose Karki Family Photography. I'm so happy! I wanted some social media profile photos. I brought my dog, and Carrie also took photos of my Maddie! And even some of my SO, Maddie, and me! The print choices in her gallery are high quality, and she helped us pick out a nice "Thin Wrap" which came yesterday. We are so happy! I would recommend to everyone and anyone who asks me who is a great photographer!

A horrendous experience

Unfortunately, our experience with Karki Family Photography (KFP) & Carrie Karki was a disaster from start to finish. Final pictures aside (which were below average to average at best), what led us to write this review was their terrible service, their unprofessionalism, the way they misled us beforehand in an effort to get our money, the fact that they insulted us after pointing these things out to them, etc. But, even a bigger deal is that after the nightmare KFP & Carrie Karki put our family through… they posted pictures of our infant newborn daughter on various websites against our wishes. Obviously, this is unacceptable and it speaks volumes about KFP. Thankfully, after getting in touch with C-level executives from two of those websites, they agreed that posting pictures of an infant newborn baby against the wishes of their parents was simply wrong… and it wasn’t something they were going to tolerate or accept on their websites. They immediately removed the pictures from their sites. Obviously, that doesn’t mean KFP won’t post pictures of our baby on other sites against our wishes. Hopefully they don’t as we want nothing more than to put this whole situation behind us. However, if they continue to do it… we’ll be just as relentless as we’ve been thus far in fighting against the exploitation of our baby. Even if we don’t succeed like we did with the above-mentioned websites, we’ll at least make sure that other members/customers of these sites know what’s going on and what KFP is doing. The way KFP and Carrie Karki treated us after getting our money was unimaginable and one of the worst experiences of our lives. And posting pictures online of a newborn infant baby against the wishes of their parents is deplorable. The situation was so bad that it had my wife in tears for days. The worst part is that Carrie knew my wife had life-threatening health issues after giving birth, health issues she was still recovering from through all of this. So she knew that my wife certainly didn’t need the kind of stress she put us through. But before we get in to all of the details – KFP will have a chance to respond to our review and if they decide to do so… hopefully their response is an honest and accurate depiction of what happened in our dealings with them. However, if it’s not, we will respond to anything inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading here on this site and/or via a blog (chrisvv2014.wordpress.com). We’ll do that to ensure that readers of this review/complaint aren’t getting half-truths and aren’t being misled, which is the whole point of this system. We experienced firsthand how KFP operates so we’re not hopeful that their response would be honest and accurate. We say that because on another site where we posted a review KFP responded with a ton of dishonesty about the situation. On that review we even posted a link to the full gallery of photos for readers to judge the pictures for themselves, but KFP immediately password protected that link and posted their response with another link to only a handful of pictures that they hand-picked. Obviously, that kind of manipulation is dishonest and readers deserve the full truth. Our final pictures were just as disappointing as everything else. First of all, we didn’t get our final pictures until over a month after… and we had to keeping emailing to get them. We were hoping to use the pictures for our birth announcements, to hang in the nursery, etc… but obviously we couldn’t because KFP didn’t send us the final/downloadable pictures until well over a month later. We did get a link to our proofs pretty quickly, but we weren’t able to use them or even judge the quality of the work based on the proofs because Carrie Karki specifically told us to not pay attention to coloring/positioning/etc. because she still needed to do a ton of work to clean that stuff up. So, although the proofs were the first sign that their work wasn’t good, we couldn’t say anything at that time. It would have been pretty ignorant of us to judge the work based on the proofs that she said still needed a ton of work. What’s worse is that we selected their most expensive 1-hour package and ended up with 1 good picture/pose. The others were simply not the quality and experienced work that they claimed beforehand. The truth is that we weren’t surprised because we saw how everything went down so we feared this would be the case. We could cite many reasons, but here are just a handful… Carrie arrived 10 minutes late and left 10 minutes early. Right from the start that’s 20 minutes off of the 1-hour. Time to setup, pack up, etc. are of course built into that hour, but now you’re talking about 15-20 minutes left to actually take pictures, and that’s what we got (for their most expensive package). When we mentioned this on another review KFP conveniently responded by saying that they didn’t remember if they arrived late or left early. What they said was that they normally arrive early and they normally leave late. I’m not going to dispute what they “normally” do because I simply don’t know. But, I do know what happened in our case… and facts are facts. They arrived late and left early for us… and in our case that played a huge role in our final product. Posting a response saying what they “normally” do is just their way of trying to save-face/smooth things over with any potential customers that might be reading the review. Carrie Karki even went on to say that our shoot was during a snowstorm, which left me in shock. The “snowstorm” DID NOT happen the day of our shoot. I remember because we had actually originally scheduled her on the actual day of the snowstorm. But because of the snowstorm we had to reschedule. On our day, she had a shoot before ours about 50 miles away so if there truly was a “snowstorm” that day I think it’s fair to say that she would have been rescheduling like she had already done with us… when there truly was a “snowstorm”. Moving on - we were told the 1-hour included unlimited photos, poses, outfits, etc.” Unlimited photos: Carrie told us she took 400-500 pictures in a recent shoot for twins so we should expect 200-250 pictures. We received just over 100. Outfits: Carrie brought a huge bin with outfits, but then only used one hat and wrap from that bin. The rest were taken with an outfit we provided or naked. Poses: prior to hiring KFP we discussed the fact that taking pictures of a baby who is over 2-weeks old can sometimes be difficult, which is completely understandable. Carrie Karki said that for that reasons it MAY be difficult to get certain poses. It all just depended on how the baby behaved that day. Again, completely understandable. However, the baby was VERY well-behaved throughout. Much better than we ever would have thought and Carrie said the same. Yet, Carrie didn’t try any different poses at all. All pictures were on the stomach or back and she just kept taking the same picture over and over. She originally said that it all depended on how the baby behaved… well, the baby was ridiculously well-behaved and she did nothing. She didn’t take advantage of her behavior at all. Which is shocking because I would think a photographer wants to do good work… if not for their customers, at least because their work represents their company/name/reputation. Ultimately, this is just one example of KFP saying one thing beforehand… and providing something entirely different. Not to mention that Carrie didn’t pay attention to the baby’s face, that the background didn’t look right with the other things in the picture, etc. BUT, final pictures aside… what made matters much worse was that when we sent them an email explaining these things; we didn’t get the 1-hour they promised, they arrived late and left early, they didn’t take the number of pictures they promised, they didn’t use more outfits/poses, etc… they responded by pointing the finger at us. They said that getting different positions, using more outfits, etc. was our responsibility, which we were absolutely shocked to read. In their response to a review on another site they went even further. They said we “insisted” we didn’t want any more poses and “refused” the use of more outfits. We absolutely NEVER said any of those things. WHAT WE TOLD HER AT LEAST 5 TIMES during the shoot was that because we aren’t professional photographers we wanted her to do what she thought was best… what she thought would look good… etc. And I think it’s reasonable for a customer to leave it in the hands of the person who said they had the extensive expertise… the person who is being paid to do the service. Again, we NEVER insisted or refused anything… we simply asked her to do her job and follow through with everything she said to us when she was trying to earn our business/before she had our money. Time and time again we told her to do what she thought would get us the best pictures based on her “20-years” of experience. Our fault? Come on! And then they insulted me and my wife by saying that the situation was due to our “unrealistic expectations” and said that they thought those “unrealistic expectations” were because we are “new parents and sleep deprived.” Unbelievable! And when we replied saying that we couldn’t believe they insulted their customers and they weren’t professional enough to be accountable for their terrible service… they continued to insult us. Carrie Karki responded with, “I pity your family”, “I genuinely feel sorry for you” and “I have NEVER had a parent tell me photos of their child are bad.” Wow! Even worse is that when this was mentioned on another review on a different site they responded by saying that they ceased all contact with us because of nasty emails we had sent and because we were harassing them. Wow! It’s all simply not true. It’s just their attempt at trying to smooth things over with readers of the review. I sent an email voicing my displeasure and listing all of the reasons why I felt we were where we were. That email simply stated the facts about the situation; that she arrived late/left early, listed all of the things she said beforehand but then didn’t actually follow through with, etc. There was nothing nasty about that email. It was simply the facts. The fact is Carrie Karki wasn’t able to accept someone being critical of her work, her service, her unprofessionalism, etc. And in my last email, which was a response to those last comments/insults from Carrie Karki, I again reiterated the fact that I couldn’t believe she spoke to customers in that way and I even went on to say that while it was her choice to speak to me like that… that I would not engage in that sort of nonsense. Carrie never responded to that last email… so I guess that’s her definition of ceasing all communication with us. They didn’t cease communications with anyone… they simply didn’t respond to my last email, which was a response to their insults. We didn’t harass anyone, we didn’t send any nasty emails, etc. We simply sent them the facts and then responded to their insults. I guess they had never had anyone stand up to their unprofessionalism and dishonesty (but they have now). Two other things worth mentioning from KFP’s response to a review we left on another site: a) they said that we told them we liked a lot of the images. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth and we were baffled at the fact that she even had the courage to say something like that. After the shoot they told us to pick the best 20 and send them back to her so that she could edit them. And we had one heck of a time choosing 20. Not once did we ever say we liked anything. The reason we had a hard time selecting 20 was because there were only a couple that we thought were good and because there were so many pictures that looked identical. Again, we never said anything about liking anything… and the reason we had trouble selecting 20 was because she didn’t have even more than a couple that we thought were worth editing. But we picked 20 because we were hoping they would get better. And b) they said that we asked for a special editing request and went on to imply that they had actually fulfilled that request for us at no charge. Yes, I did ask if they could change the colors of something in a picture. BUT NO THEY DID NOT IN FACT FULFILL THAT REQUEST. I sent them an email asking about it, Carrie Karki responded by saying that she didn’t know if she could do it because she wasn’t too good with photo editing software. I was pretty surprised to hear that coming from a photographer, but that’s beside the point. A few days later I sent her an email asking when we would be getting our final pictures and in her response she mentioned that she had tried to do what I asked but that it didn’t turn out well. I immediately told her not to worry about it because I wanted her to focus on getting us our final pictures (it had been well over a month already)… AND… because I had already taken care of the special editing request myself (I even attached a copy for her to see it). So, for them to say or imply that they had in fact done some special editing for us (at no charge much less) is simply not true and was 100% intended to mislead readers of the review. BOTTOM LINE: We chose KFP based on the information they gave us beforehand. But we were misled in a huge way. Carrie Karki told us that Family Circle and Parent Magazine consider her “among their top Photographers in the DC area”, that she had “won many awards” for her photos, etc. Speaking of those awards… this was one huge way they misled us (before they had our money). We have since found out that those awards Carrie Karki refers to are on a website. Just Google "Carrie Karki's profile" and it will take you right to the site I’m referring to. All of the awards KFP references were won on this site. But these aren’t the kind of awards you might think. Anyone can sign up on this site to post pictures, vote, etc. The site has daily contests and voting is based on Facebok-type “likes”. These awards aren’t based on a panel of professional photographers/judges or anything like that… it’s based on people like you and me simply clicking a radio button. I have since read many opinions from various professional photographers about this site and not one said that awards won on this site could be taken seriously, and they all said that a photographer for hire certainly shouldn’t be referencing awards like this. The truth is you don’t even need to hear this from other professional photographers… if you just got to the message boards/community page on that site and under the “Common Problems” section you’ll see loads of member complaints and gripes with the voting process. Take it one step further, just read the rules for these contests on their “About Us” page under the “Weekly and Monthly Contests” section. These can easily be manipulated, and based on the opinion of their own members… it isn’t a secret. Look, anyone could submit a picture to a website and win an award based on random people clicking a button. I once submitted a photo at my local county fair and won 1st prize. It doesn’t mean that I would reference that award if I became a photographer hire. It’s extremely misleading (to say the least) and customers need to know the truth. The bottom line is that we never would have chosen KFP if we knew the truth… if we knew what we would actually get… if we knew how they treated their customers… if we knew that they insulted customers… if we knew that they point their finger at their customers after providing terrible and unprofessional service, etc. Others need to know how it went for us and how it could go for them. Maybe our review will help KFP understand that being dishonest, insulting customers, not being accountable, etc. is unacceptable. For our piece of mind we even reached out to another professional photographer and a business owner to get their take. The photographer agreed that the pictures weren’t up to par and the business owner was absolutely appalled when we forwarded them our communications. Ultimately, if you hire them we highly recommend getting things in writing just in case they put you through the experience our family has been put through. It’s easy to promise/say a ton of things beforehand and then provide something entirely different after the money has been collected. It’s not a good business model, but anyone could do it. So, we highly recommend you put something in writing to ensure you don’t have the same nightmare we’ve had with Carrie and Karki Family photography. In the end, it was a bad experience, we didn’t get what KFP said they would provide, we were treated horribly, etc. We can deal with all of that and would love to put this situation behind us. But we won’t be able to do that if they continue to exploit our infant newborn baby by posting the pictures against our will. Regardless of whether or not KFP makes any serious changes to their operation … we hope this review at least convinces a future customer that they need to get things in writing. Forget about the money you lose… you need to make sure that if things go wrong KFP and Carrie Karki aren’t exploiting your children or other loved ones. We can assure you that money would be the least of your concerns at that point. As we told Carrie after she said “EVERY upset client we have ever had was only looking only to get something for free.”… we never said or implied we were looking for ANYTHING free. Aside from wanting her to stop exploiting our infant newborn baby… we wanted nothing else from her and we told her that even if she offered us something… there was zero chance we would accept anything. We would never deal with her or KFP again, under any circumstance. Again, I respect that KFP will have their chance to respond to this review. This review is as honest of a review as I’ve ever written. And I hope that KFP’s response is filled with facts and honesty as well. But again, they know that they can say whatever they want in their response because we won’t be able to answer here on this site. So, if need be, we’ll make sure that the full truth is posted right here via a blog (chrisvv2014.wordpress.com). They have already manipulated and abused their rights to respond to reviews on another site by responding with anything that helps them save-face/smooth things over with future customers who may be reading this review (regardless of whether it’s the truth or not)… but we’ll make sure honesty wins out. And if they again try to mislead customers by posting a few hand-picked images… we’ll post them all here for anyone and everyone to see as well.
