Damaged walls
- - Contractor didn't keep his word.
- - Laborers threatened to sue for unpaid work.
- - They damaged walls; I hired another company; costs doubled.
SCAMMER who doesn't stick to his word. Hired day laborers who said they were gonna sue me because he didn't pay them.
Then they damaged my walls and I had to hire another company to come in and fix their damages, costing me double.
Guy is a smooth talker but a real POS. Get everything documented and if your project sucks and you sue him afterwards, just know he has no money in his name for you to collect!!!
User's recommendation: AVOID
Scam company with multiple names and lawsuits
- - No insurance or workmans comp; subcontracted labor.
- - Names used: Ellis Painting, Barthel and Sons, John Ellis Painting.
- - Owes $200k+ in NY violations; 7+ lawsuits in 5 years.
Company has no insurance, no workmans comp, has subcontracted laborers doing the work (migrants) and goes under multiple names: Ellis Painting, Barthel and Sons, John Ellis Painting, etc. The owner owes over $200,000 in NY for work violations and failure to abide by industry standards.
Google "PR 15-245, John Ellis A/K/A John C. Ellis Sr. (T/A J Ellis & Sons)"
All positive reviews are from owner friends. Take a picture of his drivers license, insurance papers, and workmans comp - you'll need those for court down the road after he destroys your home.
He's been sued at least 7 times in the past 5 years.
I'm not a painter, nor his rival. Just a dissatisfied home owner that regrets I didn't do my research to see who took my money and ran!!!
- No insurance
- Damaged my project
- Failure to refund
Preferred solution: Full refund

Garbage job
- - Interior work was sloppy and color matching weak.
- - Laborers unprepared, limited English.
- - Promised work not done; not professional.

John is a sweet talking guy and a nice guy but actions speak louder than words. did interior work very sloppy and careless his color matching is weak at best and his laborers are day labor guys didnt speak english and had no clue of the detail work that was involved at the job they came unprepared to work missing ladders no scrappers etc.

John Ellis painting Fresh Meadows N.Y. -very sloppy job
- - John subcontracted the painting and kept the deposit.
- - Subs spoke little English and painted sidewalks.
- - I would not recommend him due to missed spots.
John was very nice until I found out he sub contracted the painting of the front of my house. He took the deposit and washed his hands of everything.
The subs could hardly speak english and got more paint on the side walk and bushes than on the house. I had to watch over them like a hawk to make sure they didn't miss any spots(
which they did). I would not recommed him to any body!
Please ask if the contractor will be doing the work and will be on site! If not please don't use them

SCAMMER!!! He and his son-in-law Paul Barthel are con artists.
They hired day laborers to paint my house and the project was miserable. Had to hire another team and paid double to correct.
Make sure you get a written contract and take pictures of his credentials and insurance certificate (he doesn't have one) - he's a sole proprietor and if you sue him you'll never collect a penny because nothing's in his name. Don't trust this guy!!!
I don’t know this person It says I owe $ 7500 Have not done any jobs for that amount in years
Without an address how can I do anything
