Formal Patient Experience Complaint – Surgical Consultation with Dr. Renee M Tholey on 1.30.26

AI Highlights
  • - Uninformed about four observers during the exam.
  • - Disregarded my discomfort and CT findings.
  • - Requesting formal review of the experience.

I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding my recent surgical consultation with Dr. Tholey on Jan 30, 2026, at 1101 Chestnut Street.

I want to note that the receptionist, medical assistant, and student doctor I encountered were professional and courteous. My concern is specifically with the interaction I had with Dr. Tholey. When Dr.

Tholey entered the room, she was accompanied by a nurse she stated is always with her, a student doctor, and another trainee, for a total of four people present during a sensitive physical consultation. I was not informed ahead of time that multiple observers would be present. I expressed my surprise by saying, 'I wasn't expecting this many people.' Dr. Tholey frowned and turned away without acknowledging or addressing my discomfort.

Early in the visit, Dr. Tholey stated, 'So we're just here for the umbilical hernia and ignore the rest.' I clarified that I wanted to discuss all findings from my CT scan, which included diastasis recti and an inguinal hernia in addition to the umbilical hernia. After the physical exam, Dr. Tholey asked if I had heard of diastasis recti and then used a Google image to explain it.

She stated they would only repair the hernia by pushing it back down. When I asked about treatment options for the diastasis recti, she said she had repaired one before and it left a wrinkling layer of skin in the middle of the stomach, and that insurance would not cover it. I asked whether the muscle separation could be contributing to my lower back pain due to lack of core support. Dr.

Tholey responded that there's no science to back that and repeated that insurance would not cover repair because there's no evidence. When I said that I did not agree, she told me, 'You seem combative.' I responded, 'I'm combative because I don't agree with you?' She then stated, 'You don't have to agree with the medical advice, but you have to agree with the facts,' referring to her statement that diastasis recti causing back pain is not supported by science. Being labeled combative for asking questions and expressing disagreement made me feel dismissed and uncomfortable. I left the appointment feeling unheard and chose not to move forward with surgery or a referral at that time.

My concerns are about: Lack of communication and consent regarding the number of observers in the room, dismissive communication about my symptoms and CT findings, being characterized as combative for respectfully asking questions and expressing disagreement. I believe patients should be able to discuss their symptoms and participate in their care without being labeled negatively.

I am requesting that this experience be formally reviewed. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Pros:
  • Beautiful interior of the 8th fl
Cons:
  • Doctors with internal conflict

Preferred solution: Apology

The doctor stated the fact about the insurance not covering the issue. You can file a review with your insurance to try to get authorization for what is knowingly not covered or sign acknowledgement that you were informed of non-coverage , were willing to proceed anyway and accept full financial responsibility.

Her bedside manner/lack of or you being/not being combative is irrelevant to the coverage issue. Your issue with the "group" of professionals present and the doctor's delivery of the information are valid but again, a separate issue.
