Excellent value and service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
The best value van hire in London if you don't mind hiring a slightly scruffy van. I have used them several times and although there have been a few issues they have often been out-with their control and they have sorted them quickly. If you want a squeaky clean van with a full tank of fuel when you pick it up these are not the guys for you, but if you just want to move some stuff from A to B they are great. They could perhaps be a little more honest on their website and for some odd reason all their vans in SW London seem to be booked out for the foreseeable future but they are very cheap. Perhaps one could describe them as the Ryan air of the van hire world just with better customer service!

Cheap for a reason

Needing to hire a van for just over a week to assist with transport for a charity event in Birmingham, ideally one with a tail-lift, I did some shopping around and found that most places were quoting upwards of £600 for the duration I needed. Doing some further digging, I discovered icanhire who were quoting a similar price near where I live in London, but their Brighton locations were offering a rate of just over £400, so I jumped in with both feet and went ahead and booked. Unlike some other reviewers, the callback to verify my Driving Licence details was received promptly and the staff I dealt with were fine, though I received multiple SMS confirmations. It was only upon receiving the detailed confirmation that I discovered the vehicle in question was over 10 years old, but I reasoned it should be reasonably mechanically sound due to it needing to pass an MOT test each year. Upon picking up the vehicle, it was obvious that it hadn't been cared for as the handle from the tailgate was missing, effectively making the tail-lift the only thing preventing theft from the load area. This lack of care was confirmed by damage to the driver's seat and one of the driver's side vents being permanently at the bottom of its travel. The engine was excessively noisy but soon proved that it was all bark and no ***, with it barely managing to reach 60mph at 3000rpm in 5th gear, and actually losing speed going downhill. I persevered, however, and managed to eventually make it back from Brighton (where the van was based) to my home in London, a distance of approximately 84 miles, in approximately 3 hours. This level of performance may well be acceptable for local journeys around Brighton, but was wholly incompatible with my intended use of the vehicle. As such, I felt that I had no option but to seek an alternative vehicle from a different company.

Ican Hire trading for free on residential streets

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
The company Ican Hire leaves a van for hire permanently parked on our quiet residential street. This means the vehicle takes up space from residents and invites strangers into the street who would not otherwise be there and the noise and disturbance that attracts. This company is trading for free on residential streets with no regard for local residents. Our street is not near to any major public transport and is primarily parked here for free parking. I have complained to the council to see what powers or will they have to do anything about this. Not a sustainable or ethical business model to use unmarked car parks. Other companies such as Zipcar have dedicated parking. Ican Hire must be saving a fortune not paying for dedicated parking.

Icanhire Car Rental Review from London, London

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We rented a van last week for 24hours. It was a knackered old vehicle that looked and sounded like it was on its last legs. The van broke down 4 hours before we were due to return it. The engine just packed up and we were left stranded in the middle of a dual carriage way. The support processes from icanhire were not acceptable. The police had to town us to safety. The vehicle was not recovered by icanhire until 5 hours later. This impacted our house move and ability to rent out our flat as planned. Not only did icanhire fail to apologise... they charged us extra for returning the van late! Absolute shambolic experience.

How to contact Icanhire director ccox@***.com

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Cox is the decrepit mastermind behind the van hire scam which uses clapped out vehicles, parked on public streets and neglected between hirings - you can tell them by the stench of urine and the dents and filth. This little captain of industry is behind the small print clause about passing on parking fines but what it doesn't say is that they pass them on late thus incurring the full un-discounted cost (discount for early payment of the fine) onto your shoulders and they charge you £35 plus VAT for the 'service'. Ethics, morals, best practice, customer service, transparency, honest dealing, professionalism, quality rentals - go to H&H. Please!

You hire the cheapest, you get the lowest

People fail to realize that Ican immediately suss that any customer of theirs is in need and not too fussy. What customers get as a result are substandard vans, incompetent telephone staff and apathy. I hired a van where the socket didn't work for the GPS - a serious issue over 600 miles with four drops but to Ican it was risible. Other vans had engine warning lights on, key safes that wouldn't open and seats that smelt of urine. Ican's business plan is to revive base assets, (vans and staff-members), from near death status and keep them chugging along whilst exploiting domestic parking for their commercial ends and the gullible public who don't see the recycled junk yard concept.

Nightmare

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Icanhire started legal proceedings against me claiming £5,000 for damage to the van, even though their website claimed the price included insurance. The court proceedings lasted almost a year before the judge finally threw out the claim as it had no legal grounds. Many have reported them taking money from their credit cards without authority. The director Christopher Cox was abusive, arrogant and aggressive. The whole experience was an utter nightmare - I would strongly advise you to avoid them at all costs.

Unroadworthy

Van had a fuel leak and I could not drive it. They even had the cheek to charge me for the fuel I had used even though I clearly stated it was undriveable and I did not use any fuel but this was the fuel leak. Windscreen wipers would not pass an MOT. Tyres deflated. No working cigarette lighter so cant use a sat nav. Lots of damage on the van not recorded. Rubbish customer service. They refused to fully refund me and I have reported them to the police. DO NOT USE. I am going to take legal action against them.

Ican hire... A really awful experience

I arrived at the car 10 mins before the allotted time ready to wait the until 13:30. However, at 13:20 I recieved an email to say the car I had reserved was not available because of mechanical problem so I had to travel another 2 miles to get to a replacement with no direct bus route so Minicab only alternative. On arrival at the car it was in such a state inside and out, scrapes, scratches and dents on bodywork, sellotape holding the wing mirror together, and like a dustbin inside. Dirt on the floor, stains and undescribable gunk on seats, no parcel shelf or spare wheel!!! The vehicle log was completely illegible nonsense and the key wasn't in a safe but just left in a cubby hole. Avoid this shabby outfit like the plague!

Charged £150 damages for damages not caused by us!

Me and my wife hired a van for on day from London, Tooting to move. When we entered the van, the key was not in the key safe. The van was dirty and obviously not inspected or cleaned from many previous hires. But most importantly the van had a massive scratch mark on the side that WAS detailed in the LOG BOOK by some previous hirer. We thus assumed that the company knew about this scratch mark and did not contact them. Three weeks after returning the van, Icanhire charged us £150 for that scratch mark!!! They obviously do not check the vans or the log books after each hire. I've emailed and tried to call them hundreds of times, but they still have not refunded £150. Avoid the company at all costs!

Absolutely appalling experience

This company really is one to AVOID AT ALL COSTS. We hired a van which was in appalling condition, filthy, smelly and broke down almost immediately leaving my husband in a very dangerous condition on the M4. This is a 'Self-serve' company which means the vans are parked on the side of a random road, so if something goes wrong or you need further help you have to ring the call centre. Unfortunately the 3 times I had to call them I was left in a phone *** for nearly 40 mins - every single time. After spending nearly 2 hours in total on hold, waiting for my call to be answered I finally got through to someone and was told I could expect a full refund that day, and over a week later they still haven't refunded the payment! I was also promised a member of the senior team would call me the following business day, and there was no call! I even called back again (another 40 mins on hold) to chase payment and speak to a senior person, and guess what, no call back, and no refund! They really couldn't give less of a stuff about their customers if they tried. So please don't waste your time and money. Oh BTW I've since hired a van from Sixt who were brilliant and cheaper too!

Robbers and thieves

Hired a van from Ican hire to move home, it was a mission to find the van and keys that were suppose to be in a safe, van had no fuel and nearly did not make it to garage, the van was in bad state. I filled the van up with fuel and continued my journey from Ilford Essex to northampton, the van was running ok for the first 20 miles it then started to judder badly I am pregnant and started to panic driving down the motorway petrified that it was going to break down, I just about managed to get it to my new home and stopped to refuel again it then went in to limp mode and it would not go any faster than 30 mph, I had to stop the van as I was so stressed that I was sick, I managed to get to my new home and turn the engine off and unload the van. I phoned Ican van hire to explain what had happened to the van it took me 40 mins to get through, they was very unhelpful and just advised me to take it to the nearest petrol garage to be picked up. I tried to start the van and it would not start I was so stressed I started to cry as I had to get back to Essex to pick my children up, I phoned them back to tell them it would not start It took me nearly an hour to get trough to them, when I finally got trough again they was rude and unhelpful and did not seem to care about my Situation and asked if I could wait with the van till they sent a recovery truck, I exsplained that I could not wait because I had to pick my children up, they said they to put keys in the van and they will remotely lock it from there end. I left the van to collect my children, it had been recovered within 2 hours they said they would contact me to let me know when they have recovered the van, I never herd from them. A few day later I went to by bank to des over to my horror they had taken nearly £900 pound from my account that I did not authorise I was so upset and angry they had taken all my money I had none left to pay bills and buy food for my children. My bank investigated it and after 10 day I thankfully got my money back. A couple of month later ICAN STOLE another £300 from my bank, even though I had cancelled my old card, lucky enough my bank had reported them to the fraud department and I got my £300 pond back strait away. Please do not use this company.
