Homejoy House Cleaning Review from Round Rock, Texas
I bought a 3 hour clean from Homejoy on Living Social and they came out yesterday. The cleaning lady was really nice and friendly, however her cleaning was not great.
I had picked up/decluttered beforehand, so all she had to do was the detail cleaning. I explained to her that we were putting our house on the market the following week, and I would like for her to focus on the bathrooms, kitchen and windows to the the house ready to show.
Pictures below were taken when I got home. I will not be using or recommending Homejoy.
Hide your valuables
Their company policy dictates you must report missing items within 72hrs. I learned the hard way.
Cleaning service itself is horrible. 5 hours of cleaning and only could clean one bathroom and a little vacuuming!
Save your money or you will regret it!
Before the scheduled first appointment, they cancelled 1 hour before they suppose to arrive even after an email confirmation two hours before hand.
I live in Atlanta and it's hard to imagine that a company in San Francisco could have much quality control that far away.I feel totally ripped off and I hope you will benefit from this review.
Very unreliable - cancels appointment at last minute. Will not recommend
I made an appointment for my house cleaning for a Saturday, when I can be at home. However, Homejoy calls that day morning (about 2 hrs before start) and informs me that the appointment will need to be cancelled. This is the 2nd time they are cancelling on the last minute.
I am looking for reliability in the services I purchase, since with 2 kids, work..etc, time is of essence. Unfortunately, homejoy fails to meet those reasonable expectations, and fails to stand by the schedule they confirmed.

Homejoy - Groupon Deal Review from Houston, Texas
Homejoy cleaning service is such a rip off. They had a groupon for $89 for 3 mths but I had to still pay an additional $97 for 5 hrs of cleanimg per month, no add ons!
I paid an extra laundry fee and they didnt even do it! When I tried to get in contact with them, no one called me back, they emailed me ans said they would just guve me credit for the next month, but they did not. They continue to charge my account even though I already canceled all my appointments. Groupon should not allow to use this business with homejoy.
They are horrible!

Kathleen,
I am an investigator and would like to talk to you. Please call me at 650.576.7477 Thanks Brian
Home Joy is doing business without a business Licence outside of California. If you are doing business in another state are you suppose to have a licence in each state that you are marketing as being licensed & bonded?
I would also like to know the answer to that question because I used to work for Homejoy also but in the Boston area?! Any input would be great. Thank You!
I strongly suggest independent cleaners to stay far away from models like this. $15 per hour is what they pay their so called independent contractors.
When you do the math on this you can quickly see that is less than $10 an hour in take home. And that is only for time spent cleaning. No travel or set up time. Independent cleaners should be paid $25 to $30 per hour if they want to earn an equivalent wage to $12 to $15 per hour, when travel time, insurance, taxes, and all other forms of overhead are factored.
I hope you get compensated for any work you have performed.
Kathleen, please, fill out form ss-8 and send it to the IRS. Homejoy is being investigated for misclassification of workers.
Hire an accountant and have him/her help you fill out the form.
If the IRS rules you were an employee and not a subcontractor, you might be entitled to employee's rights and benefits, including unemployment insurance.
This company labels itself as a software platform but their hiring practices, price setting, method and frequency of payment to their cleaners indicate they are an employer and not a contractor.
Also, I'd suggest you contact other workers and have them file the same form.
Yes please report them to the Irs and EDD. You will receive a large award for turning them in for filing all their cleaners as independent contractors.
All other cleaning services have to pay payroll taxes and high workers compensation premiums. Homejoy avoids this and can undercut the other companies prices even though there is no difference between what their so called contractors do and what legitimate cleaning employees do at the other companies.
Who loses in this scenario? Both the employees and the law abiding employers!
I am currently working for Homejoy and they keep changing my pay from $14/hr to $13/hr. I just googled "Homejoy independent contractor rights" and I found this post.
If I fill ou an ss8 form will HomeJoy find out it was me. I just don't want to be let go completely until I find another job.
Kkat, I am an investigator working on dealing with this. Please call me at 650.576.7477.
You can look up my California License information California Bureau of Investigative Services Private Investigator License #26268 Hedley & Associates Investigations Inc. Thanks Brian
If in case you are looking for a fillable form SS 8, I was able to get a copy from PDFfiller. It also allowed me to fill out the form, e-sign and print. Here's the link to the form I've used: www.irs.gov
HI Merlina,
How do you know that Homejoy is being investigated for miss-classification of workers? Is this public knowledge or just speculation? They are blatantly breaking the law, I just though they were getting away with it..
