BEWARE: Tankless water heater fiasco

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

BEWARE Tankless water heater nightmare! This drama lasted so many months, I will summarize by saying we had Holtzman install 2 gas Navien tankless water heaters. We're not angry over the fact that they could never get the almost $7,000 system to function properly, and we're not angry that we bought it for an expected houseful of company only to have to explain then (and every time we have visitors) that the water won't heat steadily and properly. We understand that things go wrong and that just happens sometimes. As long as they were trying to service it and make it right, we were patient and appreciative. They repeatedly misdiagnosed the problem (i.e. once telling us the problem was our old faucets (?) without knowing that all our faucets are new/had recently been replaced, another time saying it was our well...) But the *horrible* part was they ultimately left us high and dry, $7,000 in the red with a non-functioning system!! We couldn't believe it. The way it went down at the end was like this: they had promised (in writing) to make a final switch of one of the two systems to rule out equipment malfunction. On the date of the appointment, they didn't show up. When I emailed later to ask if I had the date wrong, the manager wrote me this:

"I’m sorry. The day we were switching out the water heater is the day it snowed and we didn’t run any company vehicles that day. I will get in touch with you Monday to reschedule."

Monday came and went and I didn't hear from him. When I emailed to inquire, he sent me the following email:

"I was with the owner last week on a business trip and he asked about your situation, I explained to him what was going on and what we’ve done up to this point and he does not want to switch out the other water heater. He feels that we have done everything possible and the problem is in the well and faucets. He said he would do the switch out if you are willing to pay for the service call to do so."

I was stunned. Over the 5 months since they installed our $7,000 system, they knew it never functioned properly yet they disavowed responsibility and wouldn't even see through the troubleshooting they promised to do in writing. I called Navien and they said there's nothing they can do, that they just make the systems. They did offer to refer me to a more experienced Navien installer.

This different company that I had to hire at my own extra expense came and fixed the problem on one visit. It wasn't the well. It wasn't the faucets.

The bottom line is: you can spend $7,000 with them and they won't even make sure your system works, even if they promise to do things in writing.

I'll add I was even more surprised because we were so patient and nice about the whole fiasco along the way (maybe that was a mistake?) and because we have been excellent customers for years with a propane gas account and were responsible for encouraging many neighbors and friends to switch to Holtzman for propane gas.

As a result of this disappointment, we purchased our 1000 gallon propane gas tank from them (even though it was expensive) so we could switch companies and no longer patronize Holtzman.

Very poor business model; not only were they dishonest but, as a result, are going to lose more money from our account than they tried to save by not servicing the systems they sold us.

I would stay away from this company and not believe them if they state (even in writing) that they will stand behind their work or products.

Preferred solution: Refund some of our expenses for the months of nonfunctioning product plus cost of hiring another company to mitigate.

Dirty Business Practices

Poor service and no client loyalty. This company is all about money and does not care how dirty they get in order to obtain the all mighty dollar. This company resides in a poor community and has complete control of the court system. Buyer be ware!

They pray on poor consumers and have all the control in the court system. staff is rude and down right mean in spirit. Their attorney is just as bad as they are. It is almost that they work together to create expenses in order to provide income for each other.

Go look at the court system records that they have field and won all of them in Shenandoah county. There are s many better companies to do business with.

Holtzman Propane Deserves No Customers

We concur. Prepaid for a 500 gallon tank of propane to be installed. Switched to Holtzman from a competitor because of pricing after many years with the other company. Installed 500 gallon tank two months ago. Requested technicians to ensure all connections were solid to mitigate any gas leak while switching companies. Gas leak developed in a short time. Called Holtzman. They responded days later by showing up and capping off our gas - which we owned! Wrote to Bill Holtzman, president of the company. No response.

Terrible customer service. Quoted a service call fee of $120 to come and check out a gas leak on their own equipment.

Go with any company except Holztman.

Removed tanks in middle of winter

Holtzman Propane tries to charge extra fees AFTER the installation is completed. They will try to squeeze you for more money claiming the job took longer than expected.

Also, they removed my tanks in the middle of winter. Left my family without heat, hot water, and cooking gas. When I called, they said someone was suppose to notify me and it was a mistake. However, they did not return the tanks.

Had to find another company quickly before me and my family frooze to death. I have never heard of such irresponsibility from a company.

Pay more money with another company and avoid Holtzman Propane.

Minimum usage fee scam

Holtzman propane does auto fills on propane tanks and decides when to refill. They delay end of year refills so they can charge an extra $200 minimum usage fee.

I used 1000+ gallons FY13 but the last refill was delayed until early Jan so technically was less (than the 800 required). They snuck in this minimum fee ... never heard of it before.

So in summary they decide when they are going to auto fill and can mess with the dates so they can charge extra fees.

This is a total scam. Getting charged for not using 800 gallons which I never heard of before and I used over 1000.

Same thing happened to me. This place is a scam.

Then if you go on will call the guy leaves the auto fill valve slightly open so it leaks all your gas out. Very dirty business practices here.

Check your license agreement. Mine doesn't have a "minimum usage fee", but it has instead:9.

DISTRIBUTOR reserves the right to charge a yearly fee.

LESSEE will be given a thirty (30) day advance written noticebefore being charged the fee and LESSEE reserves the right to terminate this Agreement upon receiving such notice.I also have been charged with minimum usage fee with no notice, which is definitely not "yearly".It smells like lawsuit... anybody?

$210 "minimum usage rental"

We just received it due to the fact we only used just over 700 gallons

Seems a bit shady that the were limiting residents to 300 gallons/60% fills last February and then charging us $210 because we didn't purchase the required minimum 800 gallons.

To add insult to injury, our tank is @ 50%. So if they would have filled it up 16 days ago we would have been over the 800 gallons.

Have had numerous similar issues with this outfit. They know how to squeeze you for things they haven't given you anything for.

That is not ethical in my book.

We not only went through the fees for not using enough, while our furnace was being replaced, but had several charges for them returning to correct things not properly done the first time. Never a fan of companies that have no respect for customers and find ways to punish them for every thing they can.
