Company ruined a vacation for me.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I booked a bucket list vacation to play golf in Scotland. I confirmed a $2400 golf tour to have the opportunity to play the Old Course at St Andrews.

In Sept of 2024 I confirmed my trip with 3 other friends. I was told there was no guarantee to play the Old Course as it is a lottery system however we knew the risks and if we didn't get selected then at least we tried. On March 24th 2025, EIGHT days before we left Los Angeles to travel to Europe we were notified that Hidden Links made a mistake and the Old Course would not be available. After two days of horrible negotiations with Robert Hester of Hidden Links we had no choice but to succumb to the fact that this company does this all the time and gets away with it.

The golf outing was right in the middle of a two-week trip throughout Europe with too many trains, hotels, and flights to reschedule. There were several options presented to us, but the fact of the matter is, this company has Nick Faldo on their commercials, promising a trip of a lifetime. The only thing Hidden Links will have done for me is taken my $2400 and given me high blood pressure and disappointment. We knew the risks involved with the lottery system and that was a decision we made, yet to have the option taken away from us so close to the departure date is completely unacceptable.

To say this company has us between a rock and a hard place is an understatement. We have no choice but to pay full price and not receive the experience we paid for.

Dear Iain, Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful response. We appreciate the time you and your team took to investigate the matter and provide a transparent explanation.

While the situation was certainly disappointing—particularly given the significance of playing the Old Course—we recognize and accept your acknowledgment of the error, and we value the sincerity with which you've taken responsibility. The offer of $750 per golfer, along with the complimentary round at The Jubilee Course, is appreciated and reflects a meaningful gesture of goodwill. More importantly, the way in which you handled this matter speaks to the integrity of your organization. Owning the mistake, communicating openly, and offering fair restitution all demonstrate a level of professionalism that, unfortunately, is not always a given in the travel industry.

While the missed opportunity was unfortunate, we did enjoy aspects of the trip, including the round at Carnoustie, and we’re grateful for the time shared as a group. Your commitment to learning from this experience and improving your processes is noted and appreciated. Please let us know if any further information or action is needed on our part in order to receive the $750 per golfer. Thank you again for your professionalism and for resolving this issue in good faith.

We pre-load all of The Old Course tournament days so that we know what days are available or not available as this is critical to all of our tours. We have reviewed the matter and what has transpired it is comes down to human error.

The event was not created at the time of notification. Had it been created at the correct moment we would have proposed a different routing or a different tour. We have corrected this internally. The timing of us notifying you was very late in the process and we can only apologize as this is not the norm.

We did try to re-organize the tour, and offer to flip the order of play to get you a day of entry for The Old Course, but at that stage we understand it was too late in the process for you to do this as we had both Scotland & Ireland on your 5 night tour. Our customer service is paramount to the success of our tours, and in this instance we missed the mark. There are no excuses on our end. We understand that the ballot and/or the singles daily draw is not a guarantee, but the chance for one day was taken away from you.

For what it is worth we do like groups to have multiple days entry, but not all tours have this flexibility. Putting this aside the error remains, and you did not have the opportunity to try. This does not sit well with Bob, myself, or anyone on our team. With The Old Course not being an option we did book you onto The Jubilee Course, which was the least we could do at no cost (approx.

$160 value per person) so that you had a great course to play while in St. Andrews. As further compensation we would like to offer you $750 per golfer for what transpired. We hope that playing The Jubilee Course, and Carnoustie went a little way into the group enjoying links golf in Scotland.

Again, we are so sorry that this occurred and transpired how it did.

And the above is the least we can do and we shall await your comments. With kind regards, Iain Iain McLean President 877-465-**** x103 imclean@***.com
