Don’t waist your money

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I adopted a kitten from a shelter in 2016. I got a Healthy Paw insurance policy for her right after.

My initial premium was $25. Premium kept rising through the years and today I received notification that its going to be $72(!).

I only filed one claim that was denied without even notifying me.

I called them and they said that my premium is increasing because volume of claims in my area is increasing - so Im paying for everybody elses care and supporting insurance company profits.

I dont recommend this insurance company - dont waist your money like I did for 7 years.

They make it impossible to get reimbursed. Their procedures are geared for consumers to give up when seeking reimbursement or authorization for an ill furbaby.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

They make it very difficult when your pet is having a medical emergency to receive authorization for your pet to see a vet.

In addition, if you finally do receive authorization , they make it difficult for & unrealistic for the owner to get the find activated & you end up paying the vet bill & then are continuously seeking & providing additional & repeat paperwork. But they kill you with kindness when requesting either the same information or additional info.

I have never experienced such an awful experience in customer care. I have been in customer service for almost 35 years & I cannot fathom how this company can stay in business.

Customer service is terrible.

Like other Healthy Paw customers. The premiums have almost doubled.

They are near impossible to contact and just and submitting claims is getting harder and harder to reach reimbursement!

We had HP for 7 years now, and I don't think I would recommend this company. Ignore all the #1 rating you see online, they are exaggerated!

Distasteful and Unfair Business Practice

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

For two and a half years I have plead for transparency. I tried ten plus times between e-mails and phone communications to find out if an issue that is considered hereditary and/or congenial would be covered.

All I needed was 2 minutes of someones time to quickly look through 3-5 pages and tell me yes or no.

Healthy Paws (HP) is setting pet-parents (PP) up to FAIL by forcefully placing me into a hamster wheel.

HP has carefully built a system that blocks all ability for a pet parent to speak to a claims agent and get a straightforward answer, omitting the goal of transparency. HP leaves it up to the pet parent (PP) to interpret convoluted insurance jargon and/or stipulations with no training on their own. The documents provided on the portal are vague and offer no assistance for the untrained plan participant. The only way to get through to someone, is to go through the out of pocket expense (during a pandemic) and hope for approval.

If it gets denied, THEN the PP has the privilege of a 2-3-minute phone call with well-trained/well-versed claims underwriter and/or on-call Vet. not to mention, their website has been down on numerous occasions and the App works when its convenient to collect payments.

Due of HPs selected operating procedures, HP bottom line/goal is to deliberately leave the PP in a guaranteed position of zero support and resolution. When asking for help, PPs are given the standard I am so sorry she /he is not feeling well!, followed by a second apology for an issue that they cant help you. HPs system is clearly flawed - At the end of the day, a flawed system causes harm to the suffering pet.

I am now left with a dog who cannot walk w/o discomfort during COVID.

My experience clearly shows me that HP does not value my loyalty, or practice compassion towards its insured.

I have dealt with premium hikes (based on HP formula for claims payout) and NEVER filed a claim.

Yet, I remained committed to HP. In return, the most their team was willing to do is apologize for an error in 2019 (that could have easily been avoided), shoot me a link for an animal foundation that could potentially help pay for the cost, ultimately brushing this issue under a rug to get it off their queue.

To say I am heart broken and dealing with emotional duress, is an understatement.

NEVER again will I deal with this company.

Massive Annual Premium Increases

We just learned that Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is increasing the monthly premium for our dog by about 20%. There was a massive increase last year as well. Now, the policy cost about 5x what it did when he was a pup.

  • Keeps requiring med records even after 10 yrs on the plan

My premium just went up 90% for an 8 year old dog. It went from $74 to $141.

Vet car did NOT go up 90% claiming that is how Healthy Paws claims they figure how much to raise premiums! There has to be something consumers can do to stop these companies from ripping off the consumer.

Terrible customer service and end of life protocol

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I recently lost my beloved German Shepherd which was obviously devastating on its own.. For some bizarre reason healthy Paws immediately terminated my account.

and I could no longer access my records.. I believe there are one or two claims that I submitted that have not been paid but now I cannot go online and check anything.. I've called multiple times and emails as well. they do not respond to any of my emails and whole times for calls.

I've been over 45 minutes every time.. I spoke once to an agent who told me this was their process and basically too bad. i asked him for a supervisor and never heard from one.

I emailed again yesterday and now and preparing to file a formal complaint with the Insurance Board. Stay away from this company

Pet Insurance SCAM

I purchased their very expensive insurance for my two dogs and paid my premiums faithfully. My card was hacked, one payment did not go through, and the policy was cancelled in days with no notification whatsoever.

Had my pets had a problem, I would have been high and dry. Of course, you can start over, paying their processing fees and waiting time, during which you pay for nothing. This company cares only about clipping their coupons and nothing about its customers.

I'm glad I found out before I actually needed them. Stick with a reliable company!

No Dental - Forget about Reimbursement for Dental Surgery

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Beware ! If your pet requires dental surgery - extractions, anesthesia, medications, etc.

HealthyPaws will pay nothing since they consider it as Dental and not Surgical. My previous pet Insurance company would at least reimburse for surgery and anesthesia for dental procedures. Given this experience, my impression of HealthyPaws is that they are no better than other pet insurance companies. They need to make a profit and their incentive is to find ways not to pay out by bucketizing claims as much as possible in the "not covered" category.

When people purchase these policies they expect surgery costs to be covered given there is no pre-existing condition. One day there will be a better, competitor Pet insurance company entering the market with realistic and fair underwriting that meets more consumer expectations than HealthyPaws.

We’re never happy when we can’t cover a claim for one of our clients. We make every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy.

Our complete accident and illness plan covers injury to the teeth if it is caused by an accident, including extractions and reconstruction of damaged teeth. Like some other pet insurance companies, our plan does not cover the regular dental care required to maintain dental hygiene for the pet, including brushing, scaling, polishing, extractions and reconstructions due to dental disease.

How much is enough?

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

This company has increased my policy over time, to over $50.00 per MONTH for a single dog. Nearly ($650) a thousand dollars a year.

When I first got the policy a year and a half ago it was about $40.00 . It has rose ever since. Even though I've never made a claim. A person would be better off sticking $50 bucks a month in a credit union savings account than blowing it on an insurance company more than likely going to deny the claim.

After two years of feeding a bank account you will have enough to cover most pet emergencies. Or at least, make a hefty down payment. It you look on BBB/Rip off report there are more complaints than any other comment. And Healthy Paws response is to simply reply to the customer quoting policy.

I was dumb founded how unsympathetic that tactic is, even if the customer is wrong.

But, all they want to do is prove their right, because policy says so. Even though they may be applying the policy incorrectly.

There continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000.

Due to the increasing cost of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates are adjusted. These increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize a client with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates periodically to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care.

We do our best to be transparent on these increases by including this information within our website on the “Frequently Asked Questions” page. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase, but our competitors premiums are historically higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws.

RIPOFF!!! STAY AWAY!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

RIPOFF! I've been paying this policy religiously for two pets for several years.

They've made thousands off of me. When one of my pets needed surgery, I had to fork out thousands. The process took a ridiculously long time and I was only reimbursed less than 15% of what I had to spend. So if I had to spend $10,000, I was reimbursed less than $1500.

This charge couldn't be included. That charge can't be included! I worked hard for the money I paid to them to make sure my pets were covered. And when a crisis hit, I feel like I was really taken advantage of.

Not happy! Stay away unless you want to be taken for a fool!

We apologize that it took longer than usual to process your claims. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and it took a few attempts on our part to have your veterinarian fax them to us.

In regards to your claims, they were all covered by your policy according to deductible and reimbursement level you chose at enrollment.

As with any policy that includes a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any reimbursements are made. In your case, your initial claim was covered, but went towards your deductible, The other claim covered the balance of your deductible and a check was sent to you based upon the reimbursement level you chose.

Healthy Paws pet insurance ripoff

Healthy Paws pet insurance ripoff
Healthy Paws pet insurance ripoff - Image 2

My dog was limping. I took her to my vet who noted she showed hind leg lameness.

I decided to wait a few weeks to have x-ray taken in hopes she just injured herself running. Limping was more pronounced as time went by so I brought her in for the xrays. 6 x-rays cost $440. I filed my first claim with Healthy Paws pet insurance and was refused because they said it was a pre-existing condition.

How do you know if there is any condition at all unless you have x-ray taken? So unfair. These people are horrible.

Stay away. Please.

Zombie post but this is textbook victim blaming. A good service would have informed their customer they may be over paying for insurance, because your dog is obviously vulnerable right now.

Why didn't you write to the pet owner asking for the first medical appointment? To have this excuse for denial waiting in the wings. Thats why.. You should have alerted them to the fact that all this time they'd been paying for nothing, since no vet visit.

But no, company just accepts checks.

No work was done here. Yet money was made.

I take my Yorkie to the Vet (VCA) one evening as he was, I thought having a "seizure". They kept him overnight for some pre-cautionary measures.

I had not problem with that at all. VCA are extremely professional. SO I get the bill, not worried about it since I had "Healthy Paws" insurance. I file a claim, very easy to do.

Healthy Paws responds by saying they need more information, regarding his prior examinations. I tell them, this was his FIRST VISIT. They AGAIN, ask for more information, so I call them. Spoke to a Lady and reaffirmed that this was his FIRST VISIT.

She puts me on hold, comes back and says..."You never took him (Auggie) for his pre enrollment physical. I tell her, you NEVER mentioned that in ANY of our correspondence. Two days later I get an E-mail...…"COVERAGE DECLINED' - 'DETERMINED TO BE A PRE-EXISITING CONDITION - NOT RELATED TO AN ACCIDENT, INJURY OR ILLNESS" seems they LOVE to come up with unique and clever ways to NOT pay claims. Ive since cancelled my policy.

Id been with them for the better part of a year. Youd think that maybe...a requirement for a "pre-enrollment physical', would of come up sometime while they were collecting my monthly payment.

reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1861346

There's no such thing as a pre-enrollment physical. They ask if you've taken your pet to the vet in the past 12 months for an exam to rule out pre-existing conditions.

If not you have during the 15 day waiting period. It's in bold letters when you sign up.

The agents don't take payments. Quit slandering over your mistake.

Guest

Your pets insurance coverage/policy had to be in effect prior to any limping being noticed. If you can get a written statement from your vet stating that your dog had no noticeable limping issues on prior check up's/office visits.

You may be able to resubmit your claim.

Its always a good idea to have your pet checked less then 30 days by a vet prior to signing up for a pet insurance policy.

This way a vet can verify and chart in the pets records/file that the pet was in good health at the time it was examined and had no known pre-existing medical issues/conditions, prior to you taking out the pet insurance coverage/policy. This helps to avoid the pet insurance carrier from claiming a pet had a pre existing medical condition and less chance for a claim to get denied.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH! Xrays taken that tell me what is wrong with the dog is not a condition.

We're never happy when we have to deny a claim for one of our clients. Healthy Paws makes every effort to be transparent about the limited exclusions of our policy.

Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care (which includes routine dental care) and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee).

Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our "Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions" page.

Claim decisions are based off of your pet's medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. Since your pet had been limping prior to enrollment (and therefore making it a pre-existing condition), we were unable to cover the x-rays for that particular limping issue.

The first thing you do when you recieve a claim is to find a way to not pay. That's a fact.

How the *** do you know she was limping from the same thing 3 months later? The first time I brought her in the doctors notes also show they couldn't find anything and she might have broke a nail. They clipped her nails. I know, I paid for it.

I guess that wasn't taken in to consideration. I brought her again after that and the doctor noted lameness in hind legs. I then waited a month or so to have the xrays to find out what was going on because she was still limping. You wouldn't even pay for xrays, let alone the condition itself.

That's a fact. Pre-existing conditions can no longer be used for human health insurance for a good reason, It's wrong. But you find nothing wrong with it, because it saves you money.

Instead of making 20 million a year you might only make 19 million. I'm sure the numbers are higher than that.

reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1061671

Dude, take some personal responsibility. You should have read their very clear statements about pre-existing conditions on their website when you purchased the policy.

People often wait to buy insurance until their pet is sick, and then they cancel the insurance when the pet is no longer sick. It's called adverse selection.

If you ran an insurance company, you would put in pre-existing condition provisions too. This isn't Obama-care.

Guest
reply icon Replying to comment of Guest-1324800

While I agree people should take more responsibility. These kind of situations tend to happen a lot.

It is quite frequent people feel 'scammed' or 'mislead' by contracts and user agreements. Have you ever read any of the EUA/Ls from the software you installed on your computer?

Did you know that even though they have you agree to things such as not having liability, it in fact cannot be enforced in court? Which is why these companies do lose in court.

Just because it is in a contract terms does not make it legal, ethical, or moral.

Many people find policies filled with legal jargon they can't understand, or are simply confused.

Some people do in fact read them and come away with a different interpretation. I thought it meant x,y,z and not a,b,c.

At the end of the day, this persons arguments of merit are merely of ETHICS. Even if the company has the legal basis and law to protect them.

Pet insurance

I purchased health insurance for my pets last october '12. I knew when I got it that any of the situations my pets had previously would not be covered.

Illnesses or injuries of any sort. Reasonable on the insurance company's part. My one pet gets frequent urinary tract infections, as humans do. She also has a deformed leg from birth, which I knew was congenital.

We thought she would go through life this way. The vet said it was OK. Well, since that diagnosis her leg has gotten worse and the vet says she needs an operation. I submit it to the insurance.

They say because she was DIAGNOSED before I had insurance, they will not cover it, even though they do cover CONGENITAL conditions. What is the difference if the vet told me before I had insurance that her leg was due to a congenital reason, or she told me after I got the insurance. THEY COVER CONGENITAL PROBLEMS. CONGENITAL means from birth.

It does not mean "when the vet tells you"!!!!!! The UTI's aren't covered either because they are the SAME CONDITION, whether it is a different germ or cause or what. INSANE LOGIC.

I find this to be a twist of the language and a fraudulent practice. I want to know who I can contact to make them see the error of their ways.

The one knee-*** action you can ALWAYS count on from Healthy Paws is that any claim you submit will be a preexisting condition, meaning they will deny your claims every time! Everything and anything with this company is always a preexisting condition.

Avoid them!

Also, ask them why they do not disclose their $25 application fee, BEFORE you sign up for their insurance. Other pet insurance companies do not have an application fee.
