This is the 2000s, not the 1970s

I wound up putting my kid at Hazelden because I called Betty Ford and asked where to go. I didn't know that they had become one in the same. I thought I was getting an unbiased recommendation. What a mistake. This program is still operating like it's 1970. They use shaming kids as a big motivator. My kid already had self-esteem issues. He left the program sober, but feeling worse about himself. His outpatient therapist made us aware of some of the outdated techniques he had been exposed to at Hazelden. She used the word "abuse". Knowing all that I do now, our family would have made a very different choice.
