My father passed away on November 17th, 2024. A few days later, I reached out to Hawaiian Electric, called for three days straight, multiple times a day, with no one answering the phone.

After a few days, someone finally answered their Oahu number. I asked for them to stop utility service at my father's apartment and said that I could send the Verification of Death from the hospital. They told me that wasn't good enough and that I would need a Certificate of Death, which takes several weeks to get.

I explained that it makes no sense as he is passed, but they still want to charge for services after his passing and that a new tenant will be moving in soon. Why is a signed document from the hospital mortician not good enough to stop services for a deceased person?
Cons:
  • No one answers the phones

Preferred solution: I would like for my recently deceased father's utility account to be shut off so I can pay the final bill and move on with grieving him.
