Product did not perform as promised. Manufacturer warranty is a farse!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

We bought "Gutter Toppers" because we were told by the rep that the gutters would not clog. Our paperwork also stated that we had a manufacturers' lifetime guarantee.

Neither promise was true! Our gutters clogged pretty quickly and when I called the company to request that the gutters be cleaned I was told basically "tough luck"! They refused to stand behind their product if the installer is out of business! So basically if the installer goes out of business shortly after installation you have no guarantee at all and no recourse!!

This is not as stated a "manufacturers' guarantee"!

This is a false promise!! BUYER BEWARE!

Do not stand behind "manufacturer warranty". Product does not perform as promised

Buyer Beware: Manufacturer warranty is a sham! Our gutters have been clogged for many years even though we had Gutter Topper gutters installed.

When we purchased the product, we understood that we had a lifetime warranty.

Beware: If the Gutter Topper installer is no longer in business, Gutter Topper refuses to stand behind their product! Even though the paperwork says 'manufacturer warranty', their supposed warranty is a deception.

Won't support homeowner

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

If you have ANY installation issues Gutter Topper is useless!!!! They will continue to tell you that they are just the manufacturer and sell their product to dealers.

That is fine but apparently they will let anyone install their product without actually knowing how to do it correctly. Their website says that their product won't harm or void roof warranty but this is FALSE. If the product is not installed correctly it does harm the roof and void a warranty.

So they tell you to use an authorized retailer but do not confirm that those individuals actually know what they are doing. It has their name on the product but they want nothing to do supporting a homeowner.

Clogging, water run-off, no local GT service contractor

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Like the reviews before mine, the Gutter Topper started overflowing after the 1st Fall leaves. During rain the water overflowed onto my deck and over front and rear door entrance.

I tried flushing the gutters from the slots and up the down spouts but with little or no effect.

I called the Gutter Topper local number on my contract and got a disconnected message. I then called the 1-800 number in Florida or Georgia and talked to someone who agreed to come and unclog the lines. I got one visit and they only used wire and wire brushes to unstop the gutters and downspouts and gone in 20 minutes. Needless to say when I had the next rain, down came the water as before right on my head everywhere.

Now the 1-800 number on my contract that says lifetime warranty of these working 100% of the time.

Now no service, and now "Stuck with $2,000 replace and/or repair.

Plus long term damage to my home is unknown. Ugh!

I put in gutter topper 12 years ago. They didn't put the flashing under the shingles enough so water has been getting under the gutter for years now.

My entire roof is rotting off at the ends.

At a junction, there was not flashing done so the siding is now rotting. Stay away from them.

I have the same trees overhanging my house as when product was installed. This spring topper got clogged & I have the waterfall effect & water runoff damaging garden & going in window wells etc.

Original installer who sold to me retired & new distributor charged $250 to clean. I had to do it to stop the damage but I don't understand why I'm charged when it's the reason I got the guards to start with-"eliminates leaves and debris from clogging your gutter" is printed on their literature they gave me. Distrib said well the trees have obviously grown & there's more gunk falling. Duh.

I called corportate & they said they only warranty the actual material not performance and I have to go to original company who sold...who went out of business/retired. Big aggravating circle. Now I've spent $2000 and have to keep hiring someone to "clean" the gutter topper or get on a ladder & do myself.

Ridiculous. And yes I performed the maintenance I was advised when installed- I hose it down.

From experience, let me give you some advice: do something about the trees over-hanging your roof. I had trees doing the same thing for many years and finally got tired of always cleaning out the gutters.

In your case, all of these systems like Gutter Topper are pretty-much a joke and cost way too much to install. They never work as described or hyped by the salesmen. Spend some money and either fall the trees around the house or trim them back substantially so they are nowhere near your roof.

Having trees so close to your home not only clogs up the gutters and can cause mold/mildew to ruin your roof but you are just waiting for a good wind to come along and knock a tree down on the house. Go back to the old style open gutters after you get rid of the tree problem.

Warranty on gutters is useless manufacture will not back product nor do they help in resolutions of franchises who sell and install the product. Do not be fooled by the lies and sales pitch.

The debris is mostly pine needles and composite material.

Laurynn Vea

What type of debris appears to be entering your gutter system? As a professional of 20 years on this specific brand named product I can tell you it’s “not” the products fault.

It has to have been installed improperly which is the fault of the individual who installed the product and or the local dealer you mentioned. Based on your description though this problem is a local dealer issue - not a corporate problem sad to say.

Mr. Iannelli is a very nice and decent upstanding individual.

Bought a brand new house in 2002, Stafford VA. Gutters filled up within 6?

months. I bought Gutter Toppers shortly thereafter and have been VERY pleased. Here's MY beef. Toppers have worked great for 15??

years. Roof was damaged in hailstorm, so we replaced the roof. Roofer said "no problem" we just take 'em off and put them back on when we replace the roof. BIG mistake.

They had no idea how to reinstall them. The gap between the topper and the gutter is too big and now we have a problem (about 6 months since the roof was replaced). UGH! Roofer is no help and I can't find a "gutter topper" dealer.

I'm sure all other "topper" dealers (Gutter Helmet, etc) will probably say "we can't help" buy our new toppers.

We'll see. Note: Before you get your roof replaced find out if the roofer really knows anything about your toppers.

Gutter Topper Scam Team Nevada County California

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Signed up for estimate for gutter toppers at local county fair. Estimator came out and gave and estimate of $1800.00.

Wanted a 10% down or $181.00 non-refundable on the spot. Did that. He writes a contract showing the subtraction of the 181 off of 1800. Now I owe $1,619.00.

The day of installation a truck comes with all the parts and 3 workers and 1 lead worker. Lead worker comes out and greets he goes around house with tape measure. The other three workers don't move or start unloading any of the gutter parts. The leader comes to me with a copy of the contract and says that the estimate is wrong and off by 40 feet.

He cannot start the work and I will have to call the estimator and have them resolved the issue. The guy comes out and says that he made a mistake and it will cost you and extra $948.00 dollars, but he will discount it to $850.00 dollars. He said I could call the owner of Gutter Topper and see what he says. I did and he said you can refuse the install but you loose the deposit of $181.00.

I went ahead and told them to do the install. The scam is giving you a low estimate, you take it and then they come back and tell you the estimate was wrong and you have to pay more to have it installed. I thought something was fishy when the other three workers stayed in the truck and didn't move. When works get to a construction site they always get out and start unloading supplies, not just sit idle in the truck for 30 or 40 minutes.

They new the scam. Even the lead guy new the routine on what to say to me. It was a setup. Who got the extra $850.

? Split between the owner and the sales estimator? My wife says I am just making something out of nothing. I don't think so.

The company is out of business now. I called once to have the gutters unclogged and they said $150.00 dollars.

I said no way. I can do it myself.

Clogged Gutter Topper

We had Gutter Topper gutters installed on our house. We were told that they came with a lifetime guarantee and were guaranteed not to clog.

Debris gets into the gutters every year; the down spouts clog and the gutters overflow. We got the installer to come out a couple of times to remove the tops from the gutters and clean the down spouts. This was inconvenient and would only last for a year. The installer has gone out of business.

At the time of purchase we received a manufacturers warranty card that says there is a Lifetime Performance Warranty.

Gutter Topper will do nothing, saying that there is no installer in our area. This product does not work and the warranty is worthless.

The warranty states that the Topper must be removed and reinstalled by a qualified dealer. This is done at a modest service charge.

It has been my experience almost without fail that those having a problem have had a roof done and were convinced by the roofer that they could handle the installation. They can't.

Pure and simple. More info is needed before passing any judgement

Laurynn Vea

As an independent contractor who services just about all of these types of gutter guards I have to believe that the debris in question may just be the long thin needles from pine trees. That is the only item that I know of that may defeat the solid metal gutter covers like gutter helmet or gutter topper.

Like "all" gutter covers then do need to be rinsed off on the exterior periodically. The other commenters claim about not being able to handle the heave downpours of rain is incorrect.

The hardest it has rained in the USA is about 7.5 inches per hour and most of these systems can handle in excess of 11 inches. The topper system mentioned in the review was tested by consumer reports and was one that they did recommend so I have to believe there was something else happening that may not be the fault of the topper system.

You have two problems, both of which seem to be endemic to all of these gutter systems: 1. failure of the expensive system you were sold to adequately do the job as promised and 2.

inability to get the manufacturer to do anything substantive about the problem(s) even tho they sell you on their "lifetime" warranty. I went to the Gutter Topper main website and they do claim to offer a lifetime warranty. Good luck with that. The system they are selling looks nice but I question how well it works in a heavy downpour.

The opening for the water flow is rather small and I would expect it couldn't handle all the water washing down from the roof, resulting in more going to the ground than into the gutters.

You don't say what is clogging the system---leaves, branches, etc. If you are getting clogs from leaves, then you have too many trees too close to your home. That's the simple answer.

The expensive solution to that is to remove the trees! You can, of course sue the company for lack of performance. Or, you can just take the things off the side(s) that clog the most and replace with ordinary open gutters. You will have to clean them out a couple times a year, but you are doing that anyway.

You got sold a bill of goods, but it sure sounded good when the salesman sold it to you, didn't it?

Good luck. And, please don't replace this brand with another company's product, no matter how good they make their system appear.

Poor customer service.

I also am having the same problem. Gutter topper 800 number has been stringing me along for weeks.

Gutters are clogged to the point of spilling into my front window and ice dams in the winter. Called again today and I was told that since my installer is no longer in business it was my responsibility to find someone to clean my gutters. That they are only the manufacturer and can only help if there was a defect in the topper. Also I was told that it was my responsibility as the homeowner to have been cleaning the gutters every year.

Isn't that the whole idea of spending money on a gutter topper?? When I told her that statement was in complete opposition to the web site she again reprimanded me. I then asked for her name and job title and she said she was the answering service. She was only trying to "help".

What a way to do business. I think I am going to report them to the BBB in their home town.

All of these systems do required a homeowner to periodically rinse the system off on the exterior to maintain the surface so that the water and debris will flow properly. If you see debris collecting between the top lip of the gutter and the nose of the product this is "not" an internal clog at all.

Small debris without enough rain flow may get temporarily stuck to the surface of the gutter cover. All a homeowner needs to do is to stand on the ground and point the tip of your garden hose at the area of the cover that is the problem area and soak the debris and then using a nozzle that will allow a sharp pointed spray rinse the cover off. Once the debris is ejected/rinsed off your gutters will be back up and running. Responsible homeowners will periodically late spring or early summer give the exterior of their home a bath so to speak.

Get up off the couch, hire a local Exterior cleaning company to wash your house and clean your windows. This will allow your homes exterior surfaces to last much longer saving you thousands of dollars in the long run.

Laurynn Vea

Can you get up out of bed and move through your house? Can you move around outside your home?

While outside do you have the strength to hold a garden hose with a nozzle on it and point it at your gutters - even if it the gutter is located on the 2nd story? If you can that is really all there is to do to occasionally rinse it off if that is required because you have more trees than most other homes around your home.

I’m not trying to make it seem easy but it is. As a professional I was taught this years ago by an older seasoned citizen in her upper 80’s.

Ice dams

Snow melt builds up on the gutter topper, causing ice dams. Never had ice dams prior to having gutter topper installed.

With ice dams come icicles, which melt and drip along the front walk. This creates a freeze hazard on the sidewalk. So far, the gutters have not plugged up, but I routinely hose down the gutters to keep debris moving. Also, the materials seem to be cheap, as a light hail storm passed through and dented the gutter topper.

On a really heavy rain, the volume of water was not handled well by the gutter topper.

Most water simply flowed right over the gutter. Gutter Topper has flaws, it's not perfect no matter what the dealer/company tries to tell you.

As contractor who services many types of solid metal gutter covers the ice formation at the eave edges of your home is "not" the fault of in you case the Gutter Topper system it is due to an inadequate ventilation system for your attic and a lack of proper insulation. Just use common sense to figure these things out.

The pitch of your roof is like a mountain and the snow is also an insulator in that the heat loss from the interior of your home circulates through the attic and warms the underside of the roofs decking which radiates through the shingles. The snow on top of the shingles is also in insulating factor in the the heat is trapped at the shingles surface which melts the snow. This melted water and slush then moves down the pitch of the roof towards the eave edges of your home and once it passes over and past the exterior wall it is no longer over a heated area of the home. Prior to the topper being installed the water and slush moved off the roof and piled up inside your gutter.

During long cold spells which we can assume happens quite often in Minnesota the slush backs up and refreezes since it is over an unheated area of the home and continues to pile up in the gutter creating a real ice dam. The ice backs up under the shingles. With the topper system the ice and snow can't pile up inside your gutter and has no place to go but off the roof and on to the ground. The less time the ice spends on your roof the less damage it is doing to the roof.

Also, keep in mind that you can't defeat Mother Nature. Add the proper insulation and ventilation which will help mitigate the ice situation and reduce energy consumption saving you money. Your roof will last longer - saving you additional money. Ice on the ground is easier to deal with after all it has to at some point in some way end up on the ground any way.

As far as handling the water flow do you periodically rinse off the exterior so that they water surface tension is maintained?

You stated that the gutters don't get plugged up which also means that you don't have to climb dangerous ladders to clean them which means they are keeping you safe and on the ground. As far as denting from a hail storm I really can't speak to that but I guess that all depends on the size of the hail.

They clog, I’m expected to clean them, and water runs fight over the top

The salesman promised I’d never have clogged gutters again, and if they did clog guttertopper would take care of it. At the last minute, they stuck a paper under my nose and I agreed to “run some water” over the gutters at least once a year. It takes more than that. They plugged, and yes, the installer showed up, cleaned them and bitched like ***, claiming this was his second visit, which wasn’t true. Now, I go around the house twice a year and try to jet water into the little crack. Big mess - wear a swimsuit.

They plug, and don’t even keep water from running off the roof. They were installed poorly, but water runs off the roof even in places where the installation is ok.

As a gutter cover service contractor I do not know of a system on the market wherein the homeowner doesn't have to periodically rinse the system off by standing on the ground. In fact, washing the entire exterior of your home should be an annual late spring ritual.

Specifically, all solid metal gutter covers should be rinsed with a garden hose by standing on the ground. Rinse them standing at an angle and not directly above your head. Soak them then use a sharp spray to rinse them. *** from dirt and debris sticks to the surfaces of the roof and gutter systems and should be rinsed off at least once a year which is really easy.

The clogs you are speaking of are external and not internal clogs wherein small debris sticks together and gets caught between the top lip of the gutter and the nose of the cover.

This is why you should periodically rinse it off. How hard is that as it beats having to constantly climb wobbly old ladders to clean your gutters.

Failure to Live up to Warranty

My home has Gutter Topper protection on the gutters. The system is clogged and leaks.

I called Gutter Topper as the installer is no longer in business. I was told that it is not their responsibility as they did not install the product. I am left with the prospect of replacing the entire gutter system or paying one of their other companies $125 per hour to deal with the problem.

The system supposedly has a 20 year promise and the system is only 7 year sold. They said it is not their responsibility even though the system is clogged, contrary to the company assertion it would remiann glog free.

People need to understand that the installers are responsible for installation and other issues that may develop with the products performance in as much as clogging, leaking, and so on. Gutter Covers Intl.

the manufacturer is only warranty the actual Gutter Cover itself. They warrant product failure, chipping, cracking and such. Be sure when you are speaking to a Dealer to have Gutter Covers installed that you make mention they need to provide a warranty for their workmanship and if there is any clogging the Installers will come out and fix the issues.

So be advised if you use Gutter Topper or and other company's covers that the Dealers need to provide a warranty for their work.

Just a freindly FYI

I also feel Gutter topper does not stand up or honor it's warranty. I have called to have them come clear the gutters and they told me they would not come out....I now have little trees growing out of my gutters. When we purchased these gutter toppers, we believed they would keep the gutters draining...sadly that is not so I can not recommend Gutter toppers for the Grass Valley cA area.

As a gutter cover contractor if you actually have a solid metal gutter cover system or more specifically the Gutter Topper system I highly doubt you have trees growing out of your gutters. It's more than likely exterior debris that drained off your your roof and is caught in between the top lip of the gutters and the nose of the topper.

Use your garden hose by standing on the ground and soaking the area where the problem is while standing at an angle then using the nozzle aim the sharp spray directly at the problem area.

This will eject the material from the nose of the topper. This process should be performed periodically when you see this occurring .

In March of 2006, we had new gutters installed on our home and a Gutter Topper system installed to prevent pine needles and debris from clogging our gutters. When we purchased the gutters and Gutter Topper system, we were told that we were covered with a lifetime warranty.

We recently discovered that the system may have been installed incorrectly, which is causing water damage to the eaves of our home.

We discovered that the installer (Gutter Topper Northwest) was out of business.

We contacted the national office and were told that they can't honor the warranty because the registration card was never mailed in. We told them that the installers told us it was registered automatically, since they were a contractor for the actual manufacturer. The warranty information was simply for our records.

I've contacted Luann at the manufacturer and was told they can't honor the warranty.

Obviously, this feels fraudulent to us and we feel there is no recourse with the manufacturer or installer as they are no longer in business.

I did file a complaint with the WA State Attorney Generals Office. Gutter Covers International did not provide their office with a written response to my complaint as requested. The Consumer Resource Center does not have authority to impose resolution of the dispute on either party. If I want to pursue the matter further, I have to contact a private attorney.

Last time I checked, when you buy a car with a bumper to bumper warranty, there is no registration involved.

If I purchased a gutter system with a lifetime warranty, I think the company should stand behind that warranty. Given their complete lack of concern and willingness to stand behind their warranty or even communicate and seek a resolution, I would warn anyone to run as fast as they can from any business dealings with this fraudulent company.

If the cover was initially installed improperly how is that a fault of the manufacturer? If you go to one of the large box type home improvement company's and purchase - you name the item - and you install it and it doesn't work properly how is that the fault of the manufacturer?

Life has risks as it does for anyone in business. Its a sad situation but it's certainly not the fault of the manufacturer.
