Everything you don’t want in a car buying experience.
Everything you don't want in a car buying experience. WAIT FOR IT.........
First, the internet sales manager Tabitha tells me over the phone that the car we are looking for is still available.
I also ask very specifically if online discount price includes recent college grad, first responder or military, (for which we do not qualify) to which she says "no." We drive 30 minutes to find that the car was sold days ago, and that the discounted price DOES include the special rebates that we do not qualify for.
Enter Steve Johnson the sales consultant, who assured us that he has a better car than the one we came for, with better features. It's a demonstrator and he can give us a great deal. We test drive the vehicle and really like it. We do the the whole back-and-forth thing for about 90 minutes an finally get what we think is a good deal.
Even though this isn't what we came in for, we buy the more-expensive car.
Then we wait in the less-than-comfy service department waiting room (why?) for 2 hours to see the business manager, Ed Howell. Sensing we are frustrated, he spends little time trying to sell us the additional warranties, etc. Later we find out why. Finally we get signed, give them our deposit, they put the plates on our new car, and we drive it home.
This was a Saturday. We drove our new car Saturday night to our daughter's graduation, and Sunday to get groceries, and are feeling pretty good about our choice, despite the less-than-stellar customer care at the dealership. Monday morning we get the insurance set-up and we are good to go.
NOW IT GETS RIDICULOUS ..... I receive a call from Steve Johnson late Monday morning saying there's been a "mistake" and we need to return the car as soon as possible.
Steve claims that we did the deal on the "wrong car." I race outside to check the VIN and sure enough, it doesn't match. He says it's for the trim package below ours and we need to come up with another $3000 if we want to keep it. Mind you, we never saw, let alone test drove, the vehicle with the VIN that magically appeared on our bill of sale. I tell Steve that this call should have been made by a manager and asked him to make that happen.
Ed Howell, calls me back an hour later and reminds me again (like I'm a common criminal with a credit score in the 800's) that I need to return the vehicle immediately.
Of course, I ask him what they are prepared to do about this massive "mistake" and his response is that they will do nothing about it. He calls it an "honest mistake" and if I want to keep the vehicle it will cost us another $3000. I explain to him that we only test drove one vehicle and spent the entirety of our time at the dealership negotiating that one vehicle, and that the VIN number on the bill of sale is irrelevant compared to the agreement that was made between the salesperson, his boss, and us. I asked him who his manager is and he said, "Mike Meah." I explained to him that I would need to speak to Mike, and he said it won't do any good because Mike is the one that told him to call me.
So apparently Mike doesn't care about the "mistake" either.
Monday evening we drive back to the dealership to turn in the car and cancel the sale. Now, all of a sudden Mike Meah is super interested in getting involved with our problem and over the next 45 minutes proceeds to discount the car that we had, eventually all the way down to the lower trim package price. I guess there is something they can do about it........
Ed.
I cancelled the sale and bought the same package at another dealer for $1500 MORE. Yes, that is how little I trust these people.
GOT RIPPED
Contacted the GM at Elgin Hyundai and going in tomorrow 5.22.18, he was very nice and is willing to work with me. I Requested that the review I wrote yesterday be removed pending status of repairs on my used vehicle purchase I was unaware of!
Purchased a car 5 days ago for 21k, my dream Hyundai sonata 2.0t limited dream car!! 2015 was the last year of the full panoramic moonroof they stopped making!!
"MY DREAM ROOF AND COLORED CAR"! Come to find out it was involved in an accident just today after cleaning and clearcoat was falling off before my eyes with mcguire's wax!!! CARFAX report was clean at the time!! I Was involved in an accident on Christmas eve and I was severely Injured!!!
Was my first ride since the accident!!! I AM VERY UNHAPPY!!! JUST GOT ALL WINDOWS TINTED AND 400$ IN EXHAUST SYSTEM!!!
WHAT A WASTE... CLEANED THIS CAR FOR 3 DAYS TO MAKE LOOK SHOWROOM QUALITY!!!
- Clean dealership courteous salesman nice selection of vehicles
Charged extra fees for things we never agreed on
Charged an extra 699$ for theft protection when question them they said they had to by law. Charged 899$ for dent protection when question that they said I wanted it when I told them I never asked for it and I not paying for it they took it off.

Nobody could or would show me. Please never do business with this dealership ever.
Spot delivery scams / YO-YO financing
***BUYER BEWARE*** This dealership practices a common scam know as the "Spot Delivery Scam." This scam was done to us by the financing manager - Casey, and Jimmy in the finance department. These 2 people "approved" us on a used car loan.
We signed the loan and left with the car. Then 1 month later they called us demanding that we bring the car back within 1 hour or they were calling the police. They stated that the pay information on the loan did not match the pay stubs. At this point we found out that Jimmy had lied on the application to get us "approved." At this point I had already put $400 into the car we thought we owned for things like new tires as well as aftermarket upgrades.
They wanted us to return the car, and then they were going to sell us an older vehicle for the same price with the same monthly payments. This means that we would be forced to pay higher interest for a vehicle we did not want. Unfortunately, they locked us into dealing with them by taking our trade in and cashing our down payment. We then visited a credit union and was able to get approved for the car we thought we already owned at 4% interest as opposed to the original rate of 18%.
Beware of these scams, they prey on people with bad or no credit knowing that you will be forced to settle on something you don't really want. Jimmy was very dishonest, and Casey is a compulsive liar. Casey will try to be your friend and make you think he's helping you out when in actuality they are not there to help. Every time we entered the dealership we would find Casey saying horrible things about previous customers to other employees.
The last time we entered the dealership Casey informed us that he walked out earlier because he was tired of Jimmy as well as other employees making bad financing deals with other customers. Casey had openly admitted that Jimmy and others were constantly messing up loans for customers. So BUYER BEWARE- this dealership does practices these scams. If you are purchasing a used vehicle from this dealer, make sure you get your own loan first.
Read the following link to further understand how these scams work so you don't get screwed over like we did.

Horrible Customer service by hyundai employee
I arrive at the dealer service desk and spoke with JORGE, i advice him that my tire was leaking and i could not find anything wrong with it if he had some one to take a quick look because it was loosing air fast and when i purchase the vehicle brand new the sales man RON did not care to advice me that the wonderful spare tire does not come with the brand new car i just bough? So very rudely and short JORGE the service guy told me that there was no one to look at my tire and there was nothing he could do about it and to have a nice day?
Really thats the kind of service you guys give, if i would have known that this dealer/ service center was this unhelpful and rude i would have bough a toyota and take my business with them, because clearly right after you buy your car nobody cares to help you at ELGIN HYUNDAI DEALER would definitely not go back to this place rather drive to st charles for way better service.
What a horrible way to run a business!
We saw a Ford Mustang on Elgin Hyundai internet website listed for $12,995. Called and spoke to Johnathan Mendez and Travis Crull, who both confirmed the options and price of the car. Made an appointment with Johnathan to come in Saturday, September 10th to look over the vehicle and take it for a test drive.
Upon arrival, we had to wait for the vehicle to be brought over from another location. Once the vehicle arrived, we took it for a test drive, and then began to talk to the salesman. We asked him to check with his manager to see if he could do better on the price of the car. He returned with numbers written a piece of paper 60 months at $350 per month. He was very nervous and kept avoiding the cost of the vehicle and just kept talking monthly payment instead. When I insisted on what the cost of the car was, he said $15,600, which was a complete surprise to us because we thought we were working with a starting cost of $12,995. Once they got us to the dealership, the price was no longer what was quoted and had increased by more than $2500.
From that point on we could not get the same story out of anyone. We spoke to a sales manager who said his name was Tony Basich. I asked him for his business card and he gave me a card with the name Tony Basich on it. Later when speaking to Johnathan he told me that Tony Basich was no longer employed there. So after finding out that Tony Basich no longer worked there, I asked the sales manager again for his name and he said Tony Basich. Later after looking on the website, I found out that Tony Basich was really Mike Medina. So why lie about your name? This is the Sales Manager?
Why would the sales manager lie about his own name? The intentional deceit is clear.
As the lies came spewing out, one story was the vehicle had some additional work done to it between us talking to the internet sales person and our arrival to the dealership. But why not be up front about the price upon our arrival?
The other story by Mike Medina AKA Tony Basich was that there were two vehicles traded at the same time and the wrong pricing was applied to each vehicle. Jonathan Mendez said no, that there was work done to the vehicle that increased the price.
We were quoted $12,995 and then when we started the process of purchase, the price was increased to $15,600. The other suspicious thing about this is that they tried to conceal the cost of $15,600 by continuing to quote only the monthly payment, instead of the cost of the vehicle. If it truly was a case of mis-marking the two vehicles, why try to conceal it? And why lie about your name and try to say you are a person who no longer works there. If this is how a manager acts, a manager is supposed to lead by example; then I do not want to imagine the practices of the rest of the sales force.
Long story short; we were misled and deliberately lied to not only about the price of the vehicle but about the identity of the sales manager by the sales manager himself.
I would not recommend this dealership to anyone.
