Made service appointment, they cancelled it without notifying me. Incorrectly told me i hadnt purchased since 2018, and dont service customers who dont purchase from them. I Made clear it wasnt correct. also, my burner and tank were from them and was actually looking to purchase new soon. They didnt care and made zero effort to correct their errors. WHY WASNT THIS EXPLAINED WHEN I SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT OVER PHONE? Bad bussiness. Here i am 3 days later trying other companies. Simply put, THEY BOOKED MY APPOINTMENT, CANCELLED IT AND DIDNT INFORM ME. NO CLASS.

Got a bill today, saying I owe money to them.

Strange because I have a credit with them showing on current statements. This bill came with handwritten and typed amounts. The envelope is also handwritten, not the usual billing. On no, wonder if this person is stealing from this company. Seems I owe them from 2017, although current statements show they owe me. Only one phone number to call them, what to do. Gone over my records, can't make any sense of this.

Downeast agreed to lowering the price $1.00 per gallon, but this was still $1.00 more than all the competitors. Going forward they said that they will put me in a lower cost bracket!

I have been a customer for over 6 years and have always had the same yearly usage, so what is the explanation? No one at Downeast can tell me, but my price has climbed higher & higher over the last few years.

Original review Nov 27, 2018
I have been a customer of Downeast Energy for over 6 years. I have given them business for my Propane, K1, Furnace Replacement, & Hot Water Tank Replacement. In August 2018 I paid $5.31 a gallon for propane, then on 11/20/2018 I paid $6.05. After checking the state average and calling 6 local companies the prices ranged from $3.21 to $4.27 per gallon. I was told I needed to speak to a supervisor and was told they could take $1.00 off per gallon for the last delivery, but that is still about $1.00 more than any other companies. Needless to say I received a credit of $16.08 after spending $609.88 in propane over a 3 month period. This is just not right! Due to the time of year I need to wait until March or April to switch tanks with another company. As of today I have only received a credit of less than $.50 off per gallon.

Minimum usage charge from Downeast

I just received a letter saying we hadn’t used enough propane so we had to pay a $64. minimum usage charge. We have two cottages in Harpswell. We installed a small tank in one house which is closed up from Oct.-May. The company was informed of that when it was installed and there was no mention of a required amount of usage. The other cottage is used frequently. We live part time in RI. Again, no mention was made of a minimum usage. The house is two years old. Last February, we paid $857.25 for a delivery. This September, we were charged $915.89 for a delivery. So, for a six month period, we paid just over $1770. Another delivery will be necessary fairly soon. Does anyone know of a propane company that does not require a minimum usage? I am not willing to pay a dime for something we didn’t use.

Worst bunch of price gouging thieves in the world I decided to change propane company’s when the price of there propane kept going up and up each month especially during the bad cold snaps company’s

Downeast apparently uses several price margins for different people depending on how much propane is used none of which is made clear to the consumer as to what they will be charged until you get a bill each month . Every month the propane price goes up especially when a cold snap goes on. I switched to a different propane company’s and the price was at least $1.20 per gallon cheaper. I have asked for about the last 4 months for them to pick up their old tank and please credit me with the propane left in tank so I could finish paying my bill with them . Their excuse for not picking up tank is their truck was in in the repair shop and the tank was going to be still frozen to the ground. When warmer weather came I moved the tank from where it was myself to the inside fence beside the road so they could easily pick it up. I called them several times and told them it was ready to go free and easy. My final call to them was to say either pick it up this week or it was going out to the side of the road and I did not care what happened with it after that. They came and picked it up that day. They credited me $108.89 for left over propane but in return they want to charge me $104.00 for the pickup of tank. Price gouging and constant price increases and now a charge to to take their old tank. When I was on automatic fill they let me run out of propane just once but enough to make me want to take them off auto fill. Then they were trying to fill my tank every other week which wasn’t necessary so I asked to be taken off auto fill . Each time I got propane the price went up more and more .How can the price of propane have so many large price differences between company’s and different different consumer usages . My use of propane was for hot water and a supplemental propane heater in home so not that much use in warmer months . Large price fluctuations like this cannot and will not be tolerated I really wish I could sue the heck out of Downeast Energy. I am retired and living pretty much off social security and can’t afford this kind of robbery and thieving

Downeast energy price gouging

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I have had downeast energy for a number of years now and have been reasonably happy until the last two years. All of a sudden being on automated fill they were showin up every 2 and a half weeks with good size price increases every time. They were trying to tell me that because I’m using this for my propane hot water heater that I also purchased from them originally ,they were telling me from years ago it was the best way to go economy wise . So just this past April I needed a new hot water to replace my original leaky old propane hot water tank. So I purchased another new propane hot water tank from downeast and had them install it. Well now their story is that I’m not using enough propane per year so they think they can charge stupid large price increases every time they come here .THIS IS *** and unfair from $3.88 to $4.13 and now to 4.25. Per gallon . I also have a propane heating stove that I use in the winter for supplemental heat. No FFFG more downeast engery as far as I’m concerned you are a bunch of thieving thieves and I don’t mind telling any body. My new company is only charging $2.70 per gallon. The receptionist on the phone was trying to blame the economy and said the cost of everything according to the news was going up a lot this year but I think downeast is trying to take advantage of the news and screwing the public over. I used to be on automatic fill but I cut that out two years ago because they were here like ever two and a half weeks for ridicoulas money charged for propane.They still managed to let me run out once on automatic fill. NO MORE auto fill thank you any way .I am retired and on social security for money and part time jobs when I can . $400.00 a month for hot water and a little supplemental heat is absolutely absurd and ridiculous .Now you want to charge me $104.00 to return my old propane tank cause of your thieving propane prices {{REDACTED}}

Unfair Propane Fee Charges

Downeast Energy in Kennebunk Me, charged me twice the market rate every time I bought propane because they said I didn't order the minimum amount, which was close to a thousand gallons in 2014. I had pictures showing I had 10% in tank and they charged me $100. for an empty tank. They charged me for 100 gallons on the last order, twice the rate and delivered only 30% of one tank so I doubt I got what I paid for, so I took pictures and will send copies to complaint agencies. Recently after being unemployed they charged me 2-3 times other people for min usage charge of $164. so I am now making a complaint to utilities and bbb because I am grossly being taken advantage of. They say the charges pay their irs taxes. I don't even have a contract with them or any documentation, rules or regulations and their site doesn't state the fee, but I do have their tanks. I stopped ordering because I lost my job and had a hardship for a few years and this is the *** I get!!!!!!!!!hardly fair in any contance being over charged. How many other times did they under deliver, take pictures of your meters people.

Downeast overcharges but refuses to maintain

Summer of 2010: I let Downeast Energy install switches (when they were hired to put in new valves for all the units), so I could turn off the furnace in the summer for heat but allow it to run for the hot water in my multi-family apartment building. They never gave me an estimate and it was very costly, but I never objected. I thought I was getting a quality job done. Now after only one season of use, there is a problem with the first floor getting heat and they refuse - absolutely - to come look at the problem and stand behind their work. Although I am not a Downeast customer anymore because of the attitude I got from their credit manager when I was behind about $100 on my bill last year, I expected them to stand behind their work. What a shock. Now I will tell all and sundry that they cannot be relied upon to do quality work - despite their exorbitant charges. SHAME ON THEM! We have a right to expect better from companies like this.

When I posted here I also posted on another site. Someone from the head office responded and for a month it went back and forth before they finally sent someone out to spend the 10 minutes it took to look at the problem.

Everyone spent far more time with the email responses than it actually took the tech to come check out the problem. Too bad they didn't just do that in the first place. They say it is not the parts they installed and I will have an uninterested company out to confirm and fix the problem.

I hope they will change their policy in the future but I am not holding my breath nor using the company again.
