My husband and I bought a travel trailer to live in full time. Because our vehicle was insured with desjardins we decided to insure our trailer there as well.
What a mistake that has been. On January 28th, 2024 our trailer was shot then on February 13th, 2024 it caught on fire. This forced us to go to a hotel. We had told the agent over the phone that we would be living there full time.
Imagine our surprise when we found out this was not the case. When my husband phoned to ask they said "Sorry, that box wasn't checked." So we had to spend pretty much our entire paychecks just on a hotel room for us and our family. It took approximately four months ( and a lot of money on our part having to move the trailer from place to place for appraisal) it finally deemed unrepairable. When we receive the insurance cheque that becomes another nightmare.
My husband and I are unable to get time off together to deposit the cheque in the bank that the loan is through. When I made an appointment with them the lady said she couldn't help me and to phone the 1-800 number. When I did that he said I would be able to deposit it through the teller. The teller said I had to have my husband with me to deposit it.
After talking to the tellers at the Scotiabank they told me to go to my other bank and deposit it there as it was a joint account. Then to transfer the money to the loan. Now we are being accused of theft by desjardins in Calgary. We have been bullied and harassed.
Joseph told us to write the amount of the cheque not the amount of the lein on the bill of sale. We also asked to have storage put on our vehicle as it is not road worthy due to a broken main seal. And we are unable to have it repaired due to our current situation. The vehicle then is put back to full coverage.
We have not only explained this but sent documents. My husband received a very smug phone call from Joseph yesterday claiming that the bank did receive the cheque. Well if he actually reads the emails rhat have been sent he will see what happened. As soon as possible my husband and I will be switching insurance companies.
I do not appreciate being treated like a criminal which I am not.
The bank received the money just not the cheque itself. If we are in the wrong for the way we handled this I apologize but we were not given the right directions either.

My trailer was shot, then we had a fire. The trailer was written off.
The cheque took 4 months to come. We were living in a hotel at our own expense. We couldn't deposit the cheque in the bank where the loan was taken out because my husband and I could not get time off together until August, and they wanted it done ASAP. We deposited the cheque in a different bank and applied it towards the loan.
The entire loan was not paid off and now we are being accused of theft. Do not ever use or trust Desjardins as your insurance company.
- Do not trust their customers in it for themselves
Preferred solution: I would like them to realize their mistake and quit accusing us of theft. They did not pay off the entire loan. The amount left is the balance plus all the missed payments with interest. Causing my husband and I a substantial amount of grief.
User's recommendation: Do not trust Desjardins.

Verified Reviewer | London, OntarioBUYER BEWARE in the event of a claim you will GET NOT SUPPORT
If you are a Desjardins customer (formerly State Farm in Canada) I hope you never have a claim. I am supporting my elderly father on a claim and I have NEVER in my 46 years been as frustrated, disapointed, angry and down right pissed off.
Desjardins you should be ashamed of yourselves for what you are doing to a fixed income senior citizen.
You committed to fix his car, retracted this offer and are now trying to screw him on the cash value. I submitted a professional appraisal report, you still don't accept it.
You are spending months quiblling over a few thousand dollars.
Even at my value my father is still in a poor situation because you are taking from him, his low km well maintained sound vehicle.
Insurance is meant to keep people whole. Noone here is looking for a winfall.
You are unreasonable, acting without compassion, to protect your bottom line while treating my father like a piece of cattle and not a person.
Shame on you.
Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution
Exaggerated annual increase in home insurance
Desjardins Assurance has increased my home insurance by 14% 2 years in a row with no claims on our part. When I complained about it and questioned their ethics, especially with a 2% inflation only annually, they did not come back to me with a lower increase.
Their founder must be rolling in his grave... Shameful!
