Desert Financial’s Overdraft Practices Caused a Cascade of Fees Despite Positive Deposits

  • - Six calls for resolution with limited help.
  • - Possible Regulation E issue; seek grace.

Pick any other bank or credit union. Their overdraft structure is on a "live system," which means it charges right when it happens.

These fees accrue quickly, up to four $30 in fees per day.

And you only get a few removed per year. My case was special due to discretion, but it wasn't enough to solve the problem when it started.

Original review Apr 04, 2026
I want to share my experience with Desert Financial regarding a cascading overdraft situation that began on March 22, 2026. Despite my account being actively deposited into and ultimately positive, I faced excessive, consecutive overdraft fees that compounded quickly and unfairly.
I called the bank six times in an attempt to resolve the issue and request fee reversals. Each call was met with delays or limited assistance. The bank did not provide a reasonable grace period to correct the overdraft, which caused the situation to spiral beyond my control.
While I appreciate the 10 courtesy overdraft fee reversals the bank previously granted, the current overdraft system still causes repeated cascades, making it nearly impossible for a customer to recover once a negative balance occurs. Even with positive deposits and repeated attempts to resolve the situation, the account continued to accrue excessive fees, demonstrating that the system itself is predisposed to creating financial hardship.
This practice seems shady and possibly a violation of Regulation E, as customers are not given adequate time to fix an overdraft before fees are applied. Even with a positive deposit stream, my account continued to accrue multiple fees, creating financial distress.
I urge Desert Financial to reconsider how overdraft fees are applied and to provide a more transparent, fair, and customer-friendly process, including grace periods for deposits and clear communication about fees.
Summary of key points:
* Overdraft cascade began March 22, 2026
* Six calls to resolve issue, with limited assistance
* Fees continued despite positive deposits
* No reasonable grace period provided
* Possible Regulation E violation
* Customer financial distress caused unnecessarily
I hope Desert Financial takes this seriously and improves their overdraft handling practices to prevent other customers from facing the same stress and financial harm.
Loss:
$500
Pros:
  • Consider customer feedback
  • Nice managers
  • Have a cool overdraft fee program
Cons:
  • Lack of reasonable grace period

  • Overdraft fees happen too quickly

User's recommendation: Try not to overdraw and pick a friendlier credit union that will be more willing to work with you

If you were smart, you would start shopping for another bank account. Like now before this one shuts you down and puts you into ChexSystems. After that, you'll be dealing with prepaid cards and off brand online "bank" accounts.

How long (grace period) would you give your employer if they used money intended for your paycheck for something else? Thus you receiving no deposit on payday.

"Possibly a violation of Regulation E.. ".

The fact that you are not providing the explicit amendment that applies to your vague, detail-lacking story shows you have no control of your finances. You're throwing stuff at the wall hoping it sticks.
