Deceptive business practices, technical negligence, and refusal to honor a return for a defective high-end turntable.

AI Highlights
  • - Turntable arrived with defects; independent expert confirmed; owner denied issues and obstructed refund; refund later secured via distributor.

I purchased a Thorens TD 1601 turntable for $5,999.00 that arrived with a bent cantilever, a cocked headshell, and a dropped VTA. Despite these defects being confirmed by an independent expert, the owner, Dan Muzquiz, denied all issues and suggested I perform a manual repair using a 'makeup mirror.' He then provided false information to the distributor, MoFi, to block my refund. I only secured my money back by bypassing the dealer and contacting the distributor directly with proof of the dealership's dishonesty.

Cons:

User's recommendation: Avoid this merchant at all costs if you are purchasing high-precision audio equipment. The technical incompetence is only matched by a willingness to gaslight customers and provide inaccurate information to manufacturers to avoid taking back defective merchandise. Always document the condition of your gear upon arrival and be prepared to contact distributors directly if this dealer attempts to block a legitimate return.

Awww, poor Dave and his fairy tale. I bet your blood is boiling being on the receiving end of the most epic, polite takedown EVER.

Dear Dave, your review is incorrect in many ways. As you know, we IMMEDIATELY replaced a second cartridge at no charge.

You then complained you did not like the sound of the replacement sent, so we took that in return as well and refunded it in full. But here is the tricky part, you claimed you "did not like the sound" of it but, when you sent it back, it was STILL factory sealed. Regarding Mofi pressuring us, they were working with us for a solution for you. After you sent us hundreds of emails and phone calls and Mofi, 40+ in one day, WE ALL, including Mofi, decided there was nothing we could do to satisfy you.

As you know, your table was refunded in full. You then again contacted Mofi to ask for assistance with purchasing the same table from another dealer and they refused to sell and to further assist you. They did not want to initiate and continue a second saga. You are known in the industry and soon you will have no vendors willing to work with you.

We even tried to help you by telling you that you were purchasing too expensive cables for your system and suggested a better, less expensive match. BTW - your complaints about us suggesting using a mirror to adjust azimuth are unwarranted. Look this up yourself, as we know you use AI extensively. This is how we suggested you check and adjust the azimuth as we suggested using a small mirror.

The following direct a cut and paste from an AI search. This is how it is done but you wanted no part of it. “Steps for Checking Azimuth with a Mirror per AI Preparation: Place a thin, small mirror on the turntable platter. Lower Stylus: Carefully lower the tonearm/cartridge onto the mirror.

Ensure no anti-skating is applied. Observe: View the cartridge head-on at eye level, looking for the reflection of the stylus and cantilever. Analyze: Correct Azimuth: The stylus and its reflection form a single, straight vertical line. Misaligned Azimuth: The stylus and its reflection form a "V" shape or appear bent at the mirror surface.

Adjusting: After the Check If the cartridge is not parallel to its reflection, adjustments are needed. Headshell Adjustment: Many turntables have a small set screw on the side of the headshell/tonearm wand to loosen and rotate the cartridge. Unipivot Arms: Twist the counterweight to adjust the headshell angle. Shim Approach: If not adjustable, use a small shim or thin card to adjust the tilt.” We were trying to help.

Additionally, we also called your "expert" and he smartly did not want to touch your table and get involved. We hoped you would have enjoyed your purchase. Ourselves, Cartridge distributor, and Mofi turntable distribution finally gave up, and we refunded funds in full. As we stated in the past, this will be the last correspondence you will receive from us.

We really tried folks. Wishing you all the best Dave...
